Overview

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Portland - Casco Bay Area - THE GILLS

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Built in 1918, The Gills is an original summer cottage perched above the sea at the very end of Bailey Island. Secluded far from the road, nestled in a grove of pine and spruce, the house is pure tranquility. Each beautifully appointed room is both comfortable and authentic.

Enjoy naps on the porch swing or walk to nearby beaches, restaurants and shops. Explore tide pools along the rocky coastline. Go sailing or kayaking. Fish for striped bass from the rocks, just steps from the porch. Enjoy fresh lobster pulled from the ocean that morning by one of the local lobstermen.

Whatever you choose to do, it all comes back to the view. Clear and calm one day, misty and grey the next. Sit back and watch the sea and sky change with the weather. Hour by hour. Minute by minute. Always beautiful. Always different.

The Gills will give you the opportunity to slow down, and remember how good it feels to do nothing at all, surrounded by friends and family.

20 minutes from Brunswick and Bowdoin College. 30 minutes from Freeport and L.L.Bean. 45 minutes from Portland.

Why Dave Johnson chose Portland - Casco Bay Area

I was born on the island (thats me on the rocks in front of the house with my dad) and after traveling the world, I know for sure that Bailey Island is one of the most beautiful places anywhere.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We've enjoyed Harry Potter and Monopoly and bubbles on the front porch; wine on the back porch; fires every night; s'mores and barbecues; ice cream at Tiffins; breakfast at The Giant Stairs and shopping for precious souvenirs at Land's End; Popham beach; the Art Museum in Portland; kayaking in Boothbay...not to mention lots of fun with our cousins in Brunswick. Our eighth summer on Bailey Island - the first (hopefully of many) at The Gills! Thanks for making us feel so at home!

First time in Maine- Did not want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

The Gills could not be anymore charming and comfortable, and the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing week with family & friends. The attention to detail was amazing and found myself roaming the house just looking at everything which really pulled in the essence of Maine and Bailey's Island. The ocean views are spectacular and were especially enjoyed from the large deck around the house, with swinging chair. Their is a secret swimming hole right out front of the house where we spent our afternoons jumping from rocks. The house was very clean, the beds super comfortable and I think the upstairs shower is now one of my favorites ever. Staying at the Gills really made our vacation one of the best ever and can not wait to comeback!

return to the gills

  • 5 of 5

this was our second year renting the gills for a week, and it was just as magical and special as the first time...

the gills is a true blue maine home, and every room feels like it can tell a story. on a rainy foggy day, we used the (real wood burning) fire place in the main room - for sunny days we jumped off the rocks out front and spent the days swimming.

looking forward to a third summer at the gills already!

Paradise found

  • 5 of 5

There is no place in the world like the gills. It was my first time there, but felt like coming home. There is above and beyond any amenity you could wish for in a rental property, no corners cut. Was one of the best vacations we've shared - and wonderful for sharing with friends. the best was mornings on the swing on the great porch, and laying out on the private rocks out front on the water. Already looking forward to returning. Thank you!

Beyond words!

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to take a moment and tell you how wonderful our stay was at The Gills. We are Mainer's and can experience the coast anytime, we chose the Gills because of it's wonderful setting and unique atmosphere. Chris, my partner and love of my life and I are old souls who find great comfort in the ocean. We had planned our getaway for nearly a year. Sadly, in July, Chris lost both his mothers in 5 days. During this awful time for us we just counted the days until we could arrive at the cottage and decompress from all the stress of life. You have created a beautiful retreat that captures a time when life was slower and the focus was on what was truly important, those we love. Our morning coffee was enjoyed sitting on the swing your Dad made on the porch overlooking the ocean. We spent our days watching the boats go by from the porch or on the rocks, and our evenings with a fire sometimes playing cards or reading from your library. It was so wonderful to fall asleep listening to the waves and wake to the boats going by. The cottage was just perfect for us and helped heal our souls. I am counting the days until our next trip to the Gills.

Owner's Response: I'm so happy you enjoyed your time at The Gills. The power of having the ocean so close is truly magical and restorative. Yes, it's great to have so many "things to do" so close by - but when I'm at The Gills I find what I enjoy most is doing nothing at all! I hope to have you back again soon.

Beautiful Views!

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with this cottage as soon as we climbed the steps to the porch and saw the expansive ocean view! Great location for walking around Bailey Island and seeing the sights. Dave is a great host and guide to area attractions. Everything that we have always imagined a Maine vacation cottage to be!

Not Your Typical Rental

  • 5 of 5

We loved our first stay at The Gills!! For the past thirty years my family has been vacationing in the Boothbay Harbor area and when we decided to stay somewhere new this year we booked The Gills based on photos and reviews alone -- we were not disappointed!! We had amazing weather all week, but there were days that we didn't want to leave the house because it was just so comfortable. Everyone was really able to relax and unwind and just enjoy each other's company and the beautiful ocean views from just about every room in the house. The cove at Land's End is just a few minutes walk from the house and we spent many afternoons out there with our 20-month old daughter searching for sea glass and hermit crabs--followed by a stop at Tiffins Ice cream of course! (You pass it on the walk back to the house so it's a bit difficult not to stop for a treat:) There are several restaurants on the island, but after eating at most of them, I would highly recommend the lobster rolls and onion rings at Giant Stairs and any flavor scone at Salt Cod Cafe. All in all we had a great stay and I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a step above the classic rustic Maine rental because this is definitely not the usual rental - there are special touches in every room and the owner has gone above and beyond with great mattresses, linens and towels. The Gills was better than we expected and the caretaker Dave couldn't have been more helpful and pleasant to deal with....we wish we could've stayed longer!!
