Completely renovated cottage with majestic views of Bantry Bay, beach access yet only 2km from the harbor town of Bantry which offers specialty food shops, amazing restaurants, and easy access to numerous West Cork seaside villages. Bantry Bay Golf Club is a Championship course with breathtaking views. 40 mins to Kinsale and 75 minutes from Cork Airport.
Keywords: Newly renovated cottage just 2 km from Bantry Harbor village and its wonderful food markets, shops and restaurants. All the original charm retained. This is a clean, clutter free DRY home with breathtaking ocean views from every window. It has two queen beds in seperate rooms upstairs and two queens in a downstairs master suite. There is a wood/peat burning stove and a modern kitchen. Did I say dry? Let me say it again.
Here is the perfect hideaway to read or write those books. The property faces west and the sunsets over Banty Bay cannot be properly described with words.
What a treat we had waiting for us at the Jewel Box on Bantry Bay. We four retirement aged people could get in to town, and its great eating spots and mega-friendly people, in short time or explore by foot or car the remote beauty near by. Rest, relaxation, reading - all the comforts of home were ours at the house. Meeting Tim was the topper on the cake. This trip, this place, will be a warm and wonderful memory. I wish I could go there every year!
We traveled around Ireland by train from Dublin to Limerick, then Galway, and back to Dublin, where we rented a car and drove to Bantry. Ireland is beautiful top to bottom, and so are the people. We had a great time everywhere, found the people to be friendly, exceedingly helpful and fun. That was especially true when we got to Bantry, met Tim and moved into the house for a few days. We explored all around, found great pubs and eateries, many of which were recommended by Dan….all good! I can't say enough about the house and the locale, it is just great. Dan was very helpful, even when we spent a couple of days in New York City on the way over, lining us up with a driver to and from the airport. Tim is so Irish, just what you would think Ireland would be about. A very helpful guy, and a lot of fun to have a beer with. With any luck at all we will be back!
I have visited Ireland many times since 1980, our first trips we toured all around the island. Then my husband and I started staying in cottages in the West Cork area. When you rent via internet you have to trust that the property will be as pictured. The Jewel Box exceeds its description because you can not put in words the feeling derived from its views and the peace sitting in the sunroom watching and hearing the waves on the beach. I used the binoculars to watch the shorebirds and keep tabs on a very large heron that fished along the stream in the field by the beach.
I didn't do as much driving this visit because I found great walking and gorgeous scenery right outside the door of the cottage or close by in Bantry and Durrus areas. It was convenient to be close to Bantry. I could buy a pizza at the Brick Oven (the best) and have it back to the cottage while it still was hot. Lots of good restaurants within a short drive. There are recommendations in the Welcome Book which are spot on.
I did visit a couple holy wells because I enjoy the historical and mystical aspects of Ireland. One well west of Macroom and another just down the road. Crookhaven, Mizen Head, and Barley Cove beach are close and worth the trip, especially O'Sullivans at Crookhaven.
The cottage is well maintained and has the comforts of easy living. I enjoyed the woodstove on cool days and the sunroom could be as warm as Florida. Tim and Eliza were helpful in getting me settled and staying in touch.
I hope to return and bring a family member along. I certainly would recommend the cottage to friends and family. I am fortunate to have found this treasure and appreciate the owner's responsiveness to inquiries. One more thing most important to me since I traveled alone is that I felt very safe in this area of Ireland and the cottage in particular.
The listing for this house could not be more accurate...it far exceeded our expectations! The house is terrific...cozy, clean, completely equipped...as my 8 year old daughter said "totally exquisite...". The beach at the bottom of the hill is fantastic, beautiful views from every window, all the comforts of home and then some. The tranquility of the place is truly exceptional. Dan has thought of everything...from the "how to" book on the coffee table, to suggestions for everything that are right on, to having 2 wonderful hosts, Eliza and Tim to greet you upon arrival. We couldn't have asked for a better place to be....already planning our return!
The house is on the outskirts of Bantry but close to everything. We prefered the Beara peninsula over the Ring of Kerry....much less traveled and there's the prize of a beautiful beach at the end of the peninsula. The markets in every village are worth visiting...so much fun and such a variety!
In sum, the house, countryside, ocean, and people of this region are truly amazing!
What a great vacation rental. Very modern and clean cottage with water views from every room. Isolated yet easy access to restaurants in Bantry. We really enjoyed the hikes to Sheep's Head and Mizen Head. Also, not to be missed is Killarney National Park, especially if you don't have the time to travel the whole Ring of Kerry. We did have Internet and it was very valuable to help us plan our outings for the next day.
My family and I just returned from a fabulous time on the southern coast of Ireland. We spent a week in this home on Bantry Bay. The pictures give an accurate look at what to expect. However, they definitely do not do it justice on just how beautiful the vistas are!! You are literally a short walk to your own private beach to enjoy and the views are unbelievable. The location is away from it all, but just a 5 minute drive from town. This was the perfect location for us. Perfect for day trips fishing in Courtmacsherry, kayaking in Skibeereen, hiking Sheep's Head Way, exploring Mizen Head and Barleycove Beach, driving through the Killarney National Park and kissing the Blarney Stone! All were around an hour drive if not less.
I would highly recommend arriving on Thursday evening if possible to take advantage of the fresh offerings of the Bantry market day on Friday. Great local vegetables & baked goods to take back to the house to cook up! But, don't get too caught up in cooking at the house as there are so many great places to eat out in Bantry as well!
The house is very comfortable and a great place to unpack and settle in for a while as you get to know the southern coast of Ireland! The newly added on master bedroom/bathroom on the first floor is a great haven away from the kids with unbelievable views of the beach. Then there are two bedrooms upstairs perfect for the kids.
Tim & Eliza, the caretakers, are so very welcoming and were a real treat. They were more than happy to address any of our needs, though really everything we needed was already there! Dan, the owner, was a pleasure to work with as well. After the stresses of planning a 2 week vacation with an opinionated husband and two teenagers to satisfy he truly made the Ireland housing portion stress-free! He has tons of recommendations and information about the area to help you plan your days as well.
Dan was diligently working to get internet at the house, but really it's so much better to just disconnect. When you need an internet fix there is a small internet cafe open until 6:00 PM in town and Julie's Diner (not suggested for eating) but open until midnight with free wifi.
I would highly recommend this home away from home to anyone! We really did not want to leave!!
