Old world elegance. Built in 1848, this fully restored, approximately 7500 sq ft. (entire house including 'The Old Rigging Loft') sits just 0.2 of a mile from the beautiful Dock Square, Kennebunkport. Located on the world famous Ocean Avenue, this house has 10 bedrooms, each with their own sink, 4 baths and two fireplaces.
The 'Old River House', sits on the Kennebunk River next to the Arundel Yacht Club. Two public parks sit in front of and along side the house.
'The Old River House,' and 'The Old Rigging Loft' are nestled among the many old Captain's Mansions of the 18th Century. An almost $800,000 renovation in 2010 brings this grand old Captain's mansion back to its original grandeur. Antiques throughout the many rooms and the frequent passing of the Kennebunkport horse drawn carriage brings one back to that slower, more quaint part of American history. Morning coffee and evening drinks on the porch are just perfect for watching the river boat traffic and the children taking sailboat lessons at the 'Arundel Yacht Club' next door.
'The Old Rigging loft', according to historical data, was one of the more popular 'Riggers' for the 'Clipper Ships' built in Kennebunkport during her heyday as one of Americas largest builders of Clipper Sail Boats. Today, 'The Old Rigging Loft'( Barn) is now, a separate apartment, with Care-takers, and owner / operators, Scott & Cheryl Mahoney available 24 hours for the convenience and comfort of 'Old River House' Guests. We make every effort to assure your 5 Star vacation stay. Just ask !
If you don't walk to town for the many award winning restaurants for lobster, scallops, fried clams, fresh fish, oysters, hand-churned ice cream, or home-made chocolate, you have a fully renovated (2010) Kitchen with Top of the line 'Medallion Cabinets' and rare and unique 'Blue-sparkle South African Granite Tops'(only place in the world that produces Blue Granite). New GE Profile, and Amana Appliances can help make you the families best chef when you cook fresh seafood from, 'Port Lobster Pound' right down the road on Ocean Ave, next to the famous 'Mables Restaurant.'
There are four stair cases, and three levels of living space. New rugs, new bed mattresses, new curtains, new furniture, custom gardening, newly added european and american antique furniture throughout, is a hallmark of the Old River House.
Inkeepers, Scott and Cheryl Mahoney have 8 wonderful children from 25 down to 5. 5 boys and 3 girls means they are very busy all the time. They have been married 27 years. Scott grew up in Lexington, Ma, and Cheryl in Farmington, CT. Scott moved to South Glastonbury, CT at age 8 and meet Cheryl at a 'Mixer' (dance) Senior year at her private school. Cheryl became best friends with Scotts mother (Gloria), so when they broke up, Scott would come home and hear Cheryl laughing with Gloria, her best friend. Cheryl, a year behind Scott, transferred to Scotts College, Fairleigh Dickinson University (NJ) . They went out with other people, grew up, and realized that they should be together and 27 years later, they still are. They have lived in Atlanta for 20 years. Scotts brother, Chris, worked at the Colony Hotel as a Busboy during College. Scott worked at the grand old 'Marshall House' in York Harbor, Me as an Elevator Boy one summer, and as a Bellman the next summer. The Marshal House was been torn down several decades ago. The Mahoneys vacationed here and in York Harbor, Me. Cheryl vacationed at her familys vacation home in Old Saybrook, CT.
Scott Mahoney purchased this estate in 2011
The Old River House is in the very heart of Kennebunkport, in town elegance and ease. No hassle finding parking in the 'Port,' just walk. Walk or drive to the beach. The adjacent Town Parks are very well maintained and used by locals and vacationeers. Kennebunkport really is Fun and Happiness. Its a great place for Adults and Kids.
Breakfast in the morning, by the wall of windows, looking at the Lobster boats going out to sea and the Sea Gulls following. You can smell the ocean when the tide goes out (approximately a 13 foot tide!) and the sun bakes the sea weed. In the evening, sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch, with a glass of your favorite beverage, makes for a great and relaxed day. Finally, when going to sleep, the evening breeze temperatures get into the 50's to 60's, making for the best sleep you will have.
Our two families (total13) enjoyed plenty of lovely space to mingle in at The Old River House. The scenic and charming New England location was perfect for walking to beach, town, shops, restaurants, etc. We have already booked for next summer and look forward to making many more happy family memories! Thank you, Scott and Cheryl for being such gracious hosts.
My friends and I had another great time staying at the Old River House during Prelude. You can see the Friday night fireworks from the front porch and it is less than a 10 minute walk to downtown where many of the holiday festivities and shopping are located. The owner, Scott, is very attentive and responds quickly if you need him for anything. Also the house is large enough to comfortably accomdodate 3 couples and 5 children.
What a wonderful week-end we10 women had at Scott and Cheryl's Old River House!!! From the moment you walk in, you feel right at home in a warm and comfortable atmosphere. The Old River House is beautifully maintained with lovely antiques, spacious/cozy rooms, and wonderful areas to relax and just enjoying your surroundings. A fully applianced and stocked kitchen made cooking together fun and a perfect time to catch up with old friends and family. Cheryl and Scott are a lovely and gregarious couple who really want your stay to be perfect! When one of the breakers needed to be reset, Scott was there immediately. He stayed to join us for a glass of wine while giving us the history of the house as well as he and Cheryl's journey in bringing the Old River House to where it is today. In terms of the creature comforts, the home is heated well, plenty of hot water for showers and lots of towels!! We really enjoyed watching movies on a rainy Saturday night, lounging on big leather couches with a toasty fire to keep us warm. This was a such a treat for all of us! We are all looking forward to our next visit to The Old River House!! Thank you Cheryl and Scott!!
Thank you Scott and Cheryl for your hospitality during our stay at the Old River House. You were both very welcoming and accomodating. From bedrooms to the living and dining spaces, there was more than enough of room for our large group. The home was also very clean and comfortable. Highly recommend, especially for larger families.
Not too many places would have accommodated a group as big as ours! Scott, the owner is wonderful. Loved our stay, we made so many family memories!
For our large family attending a weekend wedding at the popular Nonantum Resort, the Old River House was the smarter, more spacious and affordable alternative to the local hotels. High on charm and Old World elegance, we found the Old River House to be equally as convenient to all wedding events and downtown shops/nightlife. Scott's responsiveness and flexibility prior to booking was impressive, and he made himself readily available during our stay. Thank you, Scott & Family!
Maine is dramatic; cool evening air, windows open at nite. A huge 13' tide, means run in when the tide comes in. That also means the ocean has a 'sea smell'...because the sun bakes the seaweed on the rocky coast, when the tide is 'out.' The restaurants are all within walking distance. and state their 'award winning' status... for 'Lobster Rolls', or 'Fried Clams', or 'Clam Chowder', etc.
