Photos and Description of this 10 bedroom holiday estate in Kennebunkport

Estate, 10 Bedrooms, 4 Baths (Sleeps 18)

Old world elegance. Built in 1848, this fully restored, approximately 7500 sq ft. (entire house including 'The Old Rigging Loft') sits just 0.2 of a mile from the beautiful Dock Square, Kennebunkport. Located on the world famous Ocean Avenue, this house has 10 bedrooms, each with their own sink, 4 baths and two fireplaces.

The 'Old River House', sits on the Kennebunk River next to the Arundel Yacht Club. Two public parks sit in front of and along side the house.

'The Old River House,' and 'The Old Rigging Loft' are nestled among the many old Captain's Mansions of the 18th Century. An almost $800,000 renovation in 2010 brings this grand old Captain's mansion back to its original grandeur. Antiques throughout the many rooms and the frequent passing of the Kennebunkport horse drawn carriage brings one back to that slower, more quaint part of American history. Morning coffee and evening drinks on the porch are just perfect for watching the river boat traffic and the children taking sailboat lessons at the 'Arundel Yacht Club' next door.

'The Old Rigging loft', according to historical data, was one of the more popular 'Riggers' for the 'Clipper Ships' built in Kennebunkport during her heyday as one of Americas largest builders of Clipper Sail Boats. Today, 'The Old Rigging Loft'( Barn) is now, a separate apartment, with Care-takers, and owner / operators, Scott & Cheryl Mahoney available 24 hours for the convenience and comfort of 'Old River House' Guests. We make every effort to assure your 5 Star vacation stay. Just ask !

If you don't walk to town for the many award winning restaurants for lobster, scallops, fried clams, fresh fish, oysters, hand-churned ice cream, or home-made chocolate, you have a fully renovated (2010) Kitchen with Top of the line 'Medallion Cabinets' and rare and unique 'Blue-sparkle South African Granite Tops'(only place in the world that produces Blue Granite). New GE Profile, and Amana Appliances can help make you the families best chef when you cook fresh seafood from, 'Port Lobster Pound' right down the road on Ocean Ave, next to the famous 'Mables Restaurant.'

There are four stair cases, and three levels of living space. New rugs, new bed mattresses, new curtains, new furniture, custom gardening, newly added european and american antique furniture throughout, is a hallmark of the Old River House.

About Scott Mahoney

Inkeepers, Scott and Cheryl Mahoney have 8 wonderful children from 25 down to 5. 5 boys and 3 girls means they are very busy all the time. They have been married 27 years. Scott grew up in Lexington, Ma, and Cheryl in Farmington, CT. Scott moved to South Glastonbury, CT at age 8 and meet Cheryl at a 'Mixer' (dance) Senior year at her private school. Cheryl became best friends with Scotts mother (Gloria), so when they broke up, Scott would come home and hear Cheryl laughing with Gloria, her best friend. Cheryl, a year behind Scott, transferred to Scotts College, Fairleigh Dickinson University (NJ) . They went out with other people, grew up, and realized that they should be together and 27 years later, they still are. They have lived in Atlanta for 20 years. Scotts brother, Chris, worked at the Colony Hotel as a Busboy during College. Scott worked at the grand old 'Marshall House' in York Harbor, Me as an Elevator Boy one summer, and as a Bellman the next summer. The Marshal House was been torn down several decades ago. The Mahoneys vacationed here and in York Harbor, Me. Cheryl vacationed at her familys vacation home in Old Saybrook, CT.

Scott Mahoney purchased this estate in 2011

Why Scott Mahoney chose Kennebunkport

The Old River House is in the very heart of Kennebunkport, in town elegance and ease. No hassle finding parking in the 'Port,' just walk. Walk or drive to the beach. The adjacent Town Parks are very well maintained and used by locals and vacationeers. Kennebunkport really is Fun and Happiness. Its a great place for Adults and Kids.

What makes this estate unique

Breakfast in the morning, by the wall of windows, looking at the Lobster boats going out to sea and the Sea Gulls following. You can smell the ocean when the tide goes out (approximately a 13 foot tide!) and the sun bakes the sea weed. In the evening, sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch, with a glass of your favorite beverage, makes for a great and relaxed day. Finally, when going to sleep, the evening breeze temperatures get into the 50's to 60's, making for the best sleep you will have.

KPT makes us happy!

  • 5 of 5

Always fun to stay at Old River House which has the Best Porch in town. This was our second stay. Scott and Cheryl are accomadating and easy to work with. The location is perfect for what we like to do, kayak rental a block away at the Kennebunkport Marina, every restaurant an easy walk, shopping, shopping and more shopping. We walked Ocean Ave to Walkers Point everyday, sometimes twice. Love the shore dinner at the Colony also an easy walk. Our daughter loves the beach, you only have to decide which one. Fishing trips out of Arundel Wharf where we all caught a Striper. We took our dog over to Ghooch's beach every morning to swim. We spent many hours at the Silas Perkins Park across from the house boat watching. House is authentic Maine circa 1850! Cannot wait to come back.

Boston, Massachusetts

A large and welcoming historic home with water views and easy access for kayaking.

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of family members, gathered from California, Colorado, North Carolina, Maryland, Vermont and Massachusetts. The house is spacious with plenty of room for some to play chess in the living room, while some cooked in the kitchen and others sat in rocking chairs on the porch watching the boats go by. Scott was very welcoming and accommodating. Ten of us stated in the house. Additional family members stayed at the Maine Stay Inn, a short walk away. We grilled lobsters, medallions and chicken, walked into town for ice cream most nights, rented kayaks and paddle boards and enjoyed watching the tide come in and out.

Another wonderful week at the Old River House

  • 5 of 5

We returned to the Old River House again this year and our stay was even better than before. Cheryl and Scott have done a wonderful job on this beautiful home and each year they add more improvements, while managing to preserve the history and culture of a true landmark.

We look forward to enjoying the Old River House again next year. The location is perfect and the owners are a pleasure to work with.

The property was clean, spacious and in a great location. Owners were warm, helpful, and responsive

  • 4 of 5

We held a workshop in the Old River House. It easily accommodated us with each person being able to have their own bedroom. Bedrooms on the 2nd floor are beautiful - on the 3rd floor they are more simply decorated but adequate. The kitchen was easy to work in and accommodated multiple cooks. The living rooms (2) were light and airy making meeting as a group very comfortable. The table was large enough for all of us to eat at the same time - not always true for many houses that accommodate many people.

We had the afternoons off, and the location is so convenient to shops and the water that there were lots of options for activities for participants . And if nothing appealed, there was a great porch and comfortable chairs on which many of us spent time in the mornings, afternoons, and late evenings.

A very important part of our stay were the hosts, Cheryl and Scott. They were welcoming, warm, flexible available and responsive, willing to address anything that wasn't quite working for us -- including the purchase of large serving dishes when we asked. When the washing machine suddenly sprang a leak, they had it fixed immediately. I can not say enough about how much they added to making our stay comfortable and worry free.

My only complaint about the property is that it does not allow for cancellations, a fact that was not stated in the initial information but was readily available when I asked. They are willing to reschedule, however. Having this important information up front would have been a help. That being said, I would not hesitate to return and would certainly recommend it to large families and groups such as ours.

Thanks Cheryl and Scott. Hope to see you again in the near future.

Beautiful old charming house with great location

  • 5 of 5

Very short walk to center of town. Very reasonable drive from Boston. It took us an hour and a half from northern Worcester county.

It is an older property, made back in the day with slightly narrower stairways and upper level rooms were made slightly smaller back then for structural integrity. Downstairs has large rooms great for everyone to hang out. It's a very charming older house. GREAT place for a family retreat. There were 23 of us, and we plan on going again.

Scott was very good at returning calls and emails promptly.

Maine is dramatic; cool evening air, windows open at nite. A huge 13' tide, means run in when the tide comes in. That also means the ocean has a 'sea smell'...because the sun bakes the seaweed on the rocky coast, when the tide is 'out.' The restaurants are all within walking distance. and state their 'award winning' status... for 'Lobster Rolls', or 'Fried Clams', or 'Clam Chowder', etc.

  • All ten bedrooms have their own antique sink with hot and cold running water. They do leak a bit, as they are 170 years old but we really dont want to replace them with new sinks for historical reasons. We have also added chairs in most bedrooms, night stands, etc.
