Philadelphia is a bustling city overflowing with activity, history, and culture. The 'City of Brotherly Love' is a city where many come to learn about the history of America's roots by touring Independence Hall, viewing the Liberty Bell, and visiting the house where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. What many visitors forget is that Philadelphia's history was written not just in a house that stood at Seventh and Market streets, but also in the neighborhoods where Philadelphians still live today.

While much of Philadelphia has been modernized and updated, some structures remain the same as they were in the 18th century when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson strolled through the streets of Philadelphia during the American Revolution. One of the things that makes Philadelphia unique is its architecture and real estate. Just one example of unique real estate is the Trinity houses of Philadelphia. Below is some more information on this uniquely Philadelphia structure and how it has survived the test of time.

What is a Trinity house?

A Trinity house is a three-story house with each floor containing one room. The Trinity house is believed to have originated in Philadelphia as early as the year 1720, and nearly 300 years later, Trinity houses are still found across the city of Philadelphia. Sometimes called 'Father, Son, and Holy Ghost' houses or 'Bandbox' houses, Trinity houses are typically quite small with an estimated 400-700 square feet of living space (our home has 700 sqft). Please be aware that folks were smaller back in the 1700's when these homes were built.

*The stairs can be challenging if you are tall or have mobility issues. They are very steep winding.

***There are pluses and minuses to each of our properties and we want to make sure you select the one that you and your group will enjoy the most. Please see short summaries below with the pros and cons of each of our properties below.

The Chestnut Lofts ...HomeAway # 179041 (faces rear of building)

The Chestnut Lofts is located is located in Old City which although is steps away from the liberty bell and independence hall also has a very lively night time scene with cafes and restaurants and bars. The pros of this unit is that it is located on the top floor of a 5 story building and oriented facing south toward a parking garage not facing chestnut street so it's much much quieter. Drawbacks being there isn't a waterfront view as you have in the front unit, it doesn't have those huge 20 foot ceilings and the main bedroom is a platform style (the second bedroom is fully enclosed). Please see link here for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/141917

The Chestnut Lofts ...VRBO # 477685 (faces front of building)

This unit does have a water view, has soaring 20 foot ceilings and gets great sunlight. The drawbacks being it's located on Chestnut St so noise can be an issue especially on a weekend night. Please see link for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/477685

(Panama St )Cozy Home in Historic Washington Square ...HomeAway # 3165419

This home is located directly next to our other home listing #583380 (Townhouse in Washington Sq) on a quiet cobblestone walking street. Both homes are nearly identical although "Townhouse in Washington Sq" was recently remodeled with a new kitchen and new bathroom. On the upside it has a washer and dryer where the other does not. You can not be more centrally located than this, very easy walk to Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square, 13th and Sansom as well as Old City. The location is hard to beat. Drawback wise these places are small and they have very challenging stairs.

Charming on Historic Street ... VRBO # 619713

My personal favorite of all our properties. This home is located 258 S. Quince street, if you google images of "Quince street Philadelphia" you will see it has been the subject of many a painting and photograph. The street with all it's cute little walking streets and off shoots is very European/ Old World. It's very tough to drive a car down, more of a cobblestone walking street, making it very quiet, almost an oasis in the middle of the busy city. It's still not too far from the historic sites but certainly not as close as The Chestnut Lofts are. It also has a private back patio with table and 4 chairs. Although it is a trinity, its much larger than the ones we have on Panama st. Drawback wise, Id say it has a lot of stairs and could be an issue for a toddler or someone that has any sort of mobility issue. Please see link for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/619713

Historic, clean and excellent location. LOVED this property.

  • 5 of 5

Only downside is the tight staircase, so this property is not suitable for people unsteady on their feet. For everyone else I would highly recommend staying here.

great site for city exploring.

  • 4 of 5

Cozy place with convenient location near many attractions. well equipped kitchen, clean bath and well maintained.

Not the quietest neighborhood, with steep, narrow, winding stairways.

A historic house with charm.

Great accessibility to attractions with a local flare

  • 4 of 5

We were a multi-generational group visiting Philadelphia as part of my daughter's Spring Break. The unit was in a great, slightly quirky area of Philly with folks from all walks of life. There was a dangerously good bakery and ice cream shop steps from the property. We visited at least one each day or our stay...and sometimes more than once in a day! Accessing the local attractions was no trouble, whether on foot or by cab. I felt very safe in the area and ventured out for a run. Even found a local playground for my daughter to enjoy!

The rental had a well equipped kitchen for folks who might want to eat in or save a few pennies. As others have said, the beds and linens were really comfortable and made for a great night's rest. The one aspect of the home that folks should be aware of is the stairs-there are several flights of them. They are steep and narrow.

We highly recommend Garces Trading Company for dinner. We stumbled on it by chance and were not disappointed!

Josh was very easy to work with. He accommodated our early arrival and was quick to respond to inquiries - before, during and after our stay.

Has potential but needs a paint job at minimum

  • 3 of 5

The unit is the unit is clean and the location is great. The transaction was very speedy and effective. However, we selected this place based on it having several 5-star ratings and we were surprised how tired this place looked. Every room and wall has marks and nail holes, the popcorn type stucco just feels dated. It's more like a place you would rent as a college student. It's definitely time for some upkeep in this unit. The bathroom should just be totally redone (bathtub and tile not in great shape, stucco wall stuff not covering the undersurface). If you want to stay somewhere "nice" on your vacation this is not it. I would not recommend this place unless it gets fixed up, in which case it could be a perfect little spot.

PROS

- Great central location - walk to Reading Terminal Market, historic sites, tons of restaurants and more

- Clean

- Kitchen is handy and in good shape

- Good processing of the transaction and super fast same-day return of deposit - greatly appreciated

- Easy to come and go on your own schedule with key box in front

CONS

- Feels like college rental

- Needs painting and upgraded bathroom

- Loud street noise at night - partiers with loud conversations wander by and the narrow street amplifies their voices

- Water heater not up to more than 2 showers and a few dishes in the morning so if you have more people you will have to stagger your showers

There are lots of stairs but we got used to that quickly and it was not a problem.

The tray tables on the entry floor were certainly handy but it would be nice to have a coffee table at the couch.

Owner's Response: We take these reviews very serouisly and per your recommendation we did give it a fresh coat of paint this morning. Our walls do get scuffed up pretty quickly with the suitcases coming in and out. We really try hard to keep our places well kept so I appreciate the heads up. We have a 45 gallon hotwater heater, If you go through more than 45 gallons in the showers than you will have to wait a bit, but I think that it's pretty standard for a 2 bedroom 1 bath home . With regards to calling our home a "college rental", We have furnished our home with a $5,000 Stickley Sofa and a $2500 Tufenkian rug in the living room, i think that would be slightly out of the budget for most college kids these days : ) none the less thanks again for staying with us, Best Regards, Josh

Very nice proerty

  • 5 of 5

The house is well designed and well equipped. Easy walking distance to all the sights and to the bus/subway systems. Josh is very responsive if you have questions. It is a cozy space but we managed (with a little inventive problem solving) a sit down dinner for 5. Staying in the space is the best combination of a little history and modern convenience.
