I am a city and country girl - I need BOTH and have the best of both worlds - NYC and Hillsdale a little more than 2 hours apart. Hillsdale house provides a great gathering place for friends and family. I am active in historic preservation The house has wonderful space for people and parties and a great kitchen for cooking which is one of my hobbies.
Alexia Lalli purchased this chateau / country house in 2004
I bought my first house in Hillsdale in1988 and bought this house in 2004 when my family expanded. Hillsdale attracted me because it is a beautiful part of the state and has all the amenities I like - good biking and walking, xcountry skiing and snowshoeing, downhill skiing 5 minutes away, beautiful birds (friends counted 80 different birds over a weekend). There is an excellent library/community center and a busy Saturday farmer's market summer and fall. It is close to two great towns - Great Barrington and Hudson. Not far to Clark Museum, Norman Rockwell Museum, Mass MOCA, Shakespeare& Co., Barrington Stage, Williamstown, Mahawie performing arts center. Summer arts and music festivals abound - Aston Magna, Tanglewood, Williamstown, Choral Festival, Jacobs Pillow, Folk Festival and more.
Peace and quiet, beautiful trees and a small garden. The changing seasons bring great views - green summers, white winters, colorful fall, and the joy of spring's arrival. Very little maintenance needed and good helpers (cleaner, handyman, gardener). You can walk or bike, cross country ski or snowshoe right out the door.
Our family of 4 plus our friends (a couple and their son) recently stayed at this house for the last week in December. This place is the perfect one to get disconnected from the city as it is located in the middle of nature, with no street noises and no near view neighbors. The house is extremely confortable and spacious and clean. The description is very accurate. Moreover, the house has everything you need to feel you are at home, specially if you like to cook as we do. The kitchen is like a chef's one, with every single utensil you need to do the perfect meal. All our questions were immediately answered by Lex. And we had to bother her many times with different inquiries. The house is full of great books for different tastes, games like scrabble, puzzles, music and movies. The three complete bathrooms with three bedrooms were exactly what we needed. We went hiking and skiing, all a few driving minutes away. There is nothing else you can ask to have, to spend a few days resting and sharing quality time with family and friends. Thank you Lex again for your hospitality. We will be back, hopefully soon.
The week we spent at this lovely hideaway was the highlight of our summer! Lex, the owner, was so welcoming and did everything to ensure our comfort, showing us around on arrival and providing personal written guides to the house and surrounding spots as well as local maps and guidebooks. The location is ideal, in a secluded clearing in the woods on 2 dead ends yet with easy access to town, rolling farmland, and nearby Hudson and Great Barrington. The house itself is cozy yet modern, open, and comfortable with high sloping ceilings in every room and nothing but green out every window highlighting the natural setting. There was everything we needed to prepare and serve meals indoors or out, and a wonderful eclectic library, too. We had such a relaxing time visiting with friends and family in the area, hiking, swimming in the nearby lake or just staying in to knit or watch the Olympics. We would definitely love to stay here again.
We arrived at this lovely house just hours before one of the biggest snowfalls of the year but the house was so comfortable and well appointed we were perfectly happy to cozy up with friends around the wood fire and just relax. The owner is very committed to the comfort of her guests and made sure the driveway was plowed immediately and that we had everything we needed. The kitchen has everything you need to cook and serve meals.
We are from the city and don't often have the chance to let our dogs off-leash so they thoroughly enjoyed the treat of running around the property and taking walks in the snow. Because the road is a dead-end we didn't see one car the entire time we were there so we felt very safe letting the dogs have some freedom. All together it was a great vacation and I will definitely recommend it to freinds. Thanks Lex!
This house was perfect for our wonderful long weekend. Plenty of room, beautiful grounds, seclude with lots of privacy, yet minutes away from the town!
The house had a complete kitchen, loaded with everything I needed to cook several family meals.
The area is full of fun family outings...the museums, the Catamount Adventure Park, the hiking..all kept my family (especially my three teens!!) entertained and happy
We would love to come back and stay again!
