About Marilly Morton

Fred, as a teacher, is a life time learner. His passion is family, reading and sports. Marilly has a passion for family, birds, photography and traveling, visiting Nicaragua, The Netherlands, Germany & Italy. We both visited Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Switzerland, Aruba, Vancouver Island & Victoria BC, and Fred managed a sailing trip to Belize with our oldest son. To keep the international flavor in our home, we hosted exchange students including: two German, two Japanese, two Koreans, and one Colombian.

Besides our four vacation rentals, we own 2 Subway stores (in Portland, OR).

Marilly Morton purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Marilly Morton chose Packwood

We love the mountains, and Packwood is very like Switzerland, only the mountains are smaller and farther apart. It is in the center of Gifford Pinchot Nat'l Forest, 7 miles from the southern entrance to Mt. Rainier Nat'l Park, and surround by Tatoosh, William O Douglass, and Goat Rocks Wilderness areas. There is a constant flow of wildlife including: elk, coyotes, raccoon, fox, black bear, bald eagles, beaver and more, and year round recreational activities.

What makes this cabin unique

We spent every weekend for almost a year in Hall Creek Cabin while we built the Rainier View Lodge. We really made it our home away from home. I enjoyed the hot tub under a star studded sky, the song of Hall Creek, wood smoke on the wind and the plethora of passing elk . . . what a combination! It's a great place to dream and build!

Great stay at this cozy cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We had a very enjoyable stay at Hall Creek Cabin. It was a perfect size for my husband and I and our teenage daughter, and definitely would accommodate another person comfortably. The kitchen had enough of an assortment of pots, pans and utensils to cook at the cabin. The beds were super comfy. It is a convenient location both for skiing at White Pass and eating out in Packwood. All communications with the owner were great!

Owners are ridiculous

  • 1 of 5

I'm not sure how this place has such glowing reviews. Everything about this place was just okay: It is extremely hard to park here if you arrive at night, there are rocks surrounding the parking area that are impossible to see. The hot tub barely gets warm.

Why I am giving a one star review: the owners are completely ridiculous, which maybe you can gleam from their lengthy replies to other reviews. We were charged a cleaning fee but required to wash all the towels, dishes, take out all of the trash ourselves. The previous guest had left a bunch of towels in the washer so we had to wash those as well. We spent our entire final morning here cleaning and were still charged $50 out of our deposit (in addition to the cleaning fee) due to among other things: putting dishes away in an "unsightly" manner, a green bic lighter being found under the sofa, leaving dishes to dry in the dish rack, leaving the television and coffee pot on, the vacuum cleaner and chairs being out of place, and not sweeping (instructions said explicitly we don't need to sweep). Apparently this took an extra two hours to clean.

Also, they expect you to wash the sheets yourself if they are soiled when you leave, meaning they don't bother to wash them between guests! Lovely. I honestly doubt this cabin is cleaned by professionals very often. Overall I'm disappointed and absolutely will not be returning to any of their properties.

Owner's Response: First, let me say thank you, SA, for your patronage and taking time to write a review. Reviews have immeasurable value as a public forum for hosts & guests alike, both present & future. I would like to use this opportunity to inform travelers whose paths will cross ours, as they search properties for their own vacations. To those who have read this far, I ask you to consider all 55 of our reviews before coming to a conclusion about this 1 star. I pay serious attention to all reviews in order to improve. We have been in the VR industry since 2006. It is never easy keeping even a portion of a guest’s security/damage deposit (which was the case here), but it does happen once or twice a year, & almost always followed by a very poor review, so we do so with trepidation. After all, who wants a bad review. In order to retain any or all of a deposit, we provide written & photo documentation of the issues to the guest & keep pictures as proof for the booking site in case guests disagree & file a grievance. I don’t care to do a tit for tat responses, but there are inconsistencies between the above review & our guideline paperwork (procedures & contract). VRBO does not allow room to copy and paste them exactly, so I must modify for the sake of space, adding a few very important comments of my own and avoiding the list SA didn’t include that added to the extra cleaning. “Upon CHECK-IN, take that close look around. If you find anything broken, dirty or out of the ordinary for a vacation rental, be sure to contact us right away or you will be held responsible when housekeeping comes in after you. If you have questions, feel free to call.” This would have been the case for what was described as, “previous guest had left a bunch of towels in the washer so we had to wash those as well.” We received no such notice! “Return the kitchen to the condition you found it in. CLEANING FEE–The one-time fee includes: dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing the bathroom, making beds, and laundry, though for time's sake, you agree to START one load. You should pick up all your own trash, empty the refrig. & freezer!” To address the “ick factor” about “they don't bother to wash them [sheets] between guests,” WE ABSOLUTELY WASH SHEETS BETWEEN ALL GUESTS! RE: Rocks-The transformer for the neighborhood is on the HCC property & rocks were placed for its protect. Blocking the ingress/egress of neighbors required a few more. A light w/motion sensor was added to assist also.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We rented this cabin as a family of four to use during the Christmas break for a family ski trip. It is a cozy cabin, with two bedrooms with closet space and each with little heaters. Loved having the washing and dryer and they even supplied detergent (even though we brought our own). The kitchen has the basics with a few spices available. Very quite and away from the road and close to the store. Really simple and quick clean up upon check out too. Overall, we would stay there again.

Perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

Stayed in this cozy cabin in mid-October. Everything was clean and comfortable and met our needs. Location was great for our day hiking at Mt Rainier and a side trip to Mount Saint Helen's. I loved being able to see if Mt Rainier was out from my bedroom window.

Nice, but a couple of snags during our trip

  • 3 of 5

A nice space to holiday in inside, although fairly shabby looking from the outside. Hot tub is great, but don't close the back door when you jump in - it automatically locks! Luckily a quick call to Marilly from a neighbours cell soon had us back inside. Generally nice, but the long list of rules was a bit tiresome and our stay was tinged slightly by finding a dead mouse in a trap under the bed... apparently that was one who remained after a leak meant some critters had got inside.

Owner's Response: Dear LC, As stated in the last review response to DC, “Thank you for your review and, yes, Hall Creek Cabin needs a little TLC outside! We JUST had the hot water heater replaced in the cabin and the whole lower half of the back wall removed/replaced due to water damage. There wasn’t enough time to get the painting done as we were on the cusp of our busiest part of the season with people in and out same day. Structurally, all is well. We’ll make it 'pretty' later this fall when there are guest gaps. Fortunately, most folks vacation on the inside of the cabin and then enjoy Nature outside.” Because the entire back side of the wall was open, “nature” crept in and needed dispatching to its final resting place. I’m sorry its removal was overlooked by housekeeping before your arrival. If you are a potential guest, please read our other reviews where you won’t find comments of invaders. Regarding the door locks . . . they aren’t automatic if unlocked before exiting, I’m sorry you got caught out in the cold, thankful for kind neighbors and the extra outdoor lock box with back up key. The “rules” you referenced in your comment are nothing more than an exact copy of the driving directions, access codes and procedures sent prior to all guest’s arrival, and include directions, check-in/check-out instructions and the most important items for which a guest might lose part or all their security deposit which we do NOT want. Some guests want more information in order to feel comfortable about their visit, others less and everything in between. We desire to provide an enjoyable, clean, comfortable, safe environment for guests, yet protect our property, furnishings and the surrounding area. If I were to frame expectations as light reading and suggestions versus what they are, I propose they would seldom be followed. To lighten that “tiresome” feeling, I created a “WASTE Happens” page, complete with pictures for septic tank protection and hopefully generate joviality at the same time.
