Makai Hideaway quiet and peaceful. Unwind and relax from city life. House is an an hour south of Kona and one hour ten minutes south of the Kona airport. It is one hour ten minutes to volcano from the house. shop before you come as nearest grocery store is 25 minutes away.Three bedroom, three baths, and game room. There actually is a bed in the gameroom so we verge on being a 4 bedroom. A large Lanai runs the length of the house for dolphin and whale watching. Have dinner on a beautiful 600 foot Lanai and watch the incredible sunsets enjoy the warm climate with cool coastal breezes. One and half blocks to water access for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving and fishing. It's great to walk around the neighborhood. there is a king bed in the master and three queen beds in the house and one queen sleeper sofa plus a futon. Also, there is an ocean view from the kitchen and you can sit on the couch and see the ocean. Gameroom downstairs has ping pong, darts, air hockey, and small pool table. Sunsets are phenomenal and different every night. There is a barbecue on top deck. First floor master is the largest bedroom in the house and you can hear the waves great from there at night. There's a king bed in the master! There is a washer and dryer in the gameroom and extra small fridge by the tiki bar. the nearest grocery store is 30 minutes away so many travelers stop at Costco as it is by the Kona airport on the way down. There is a supermarket at mile marker 77 and gas station, too.House is a good hour ten south of airport at mile marker 89. The views of the Pacific ocean are sensational and I never get tried of seeing as I descend from 1200 feet to sea level. Please conserve on water and electricity as Hawaii has the nations top rates. There's a nice ocean breeze often at the house but there isn't AC at the house nor do most homeowners in Hawaii have it. We saw a turtle the size of a volkswagon off one of the cliffs in the area and the snorkeling at the swimming hole is great! The swimming hole is a two minute walk away- go to Kai street and turn right. This is where you put in the kayaks or take them into town. There is internet and Netflix so the TV is great! My favorite thing is reading a book on the chaise lounge on the deck or going down to the swimming hole to swim and snorkel. Downstairs in the closet is everything you would ever need- coolers, beach mats, beach toys, snorkeling masks and equipment, life jackets,boogie boards, chairs, fishing tackle box, fishing poles are in garage have Daniel get them for you if you wish to use,

The Milolii area is famous for deep sea fishing, and you can watch the fishing boats or go out yourself. The beautiful secluded Honomolino Beach is close by-short walk along the coast from Milolii State Park-watch the spinner dolphins, snorkel with the fish in the coral, and maybe see a sea turtle or a rare Hawaiian monk seal.

From Kona airport go south on Highway 11 towards Kailua and continue on towards the 89 mile marker, turn right on Milolii Road. Go about three miles, turn right on to Ewalu Avenue drive down the road to Waenea Avenue turn left. Drive to third intersection which is Elima Avenue, turn right and go a half block to a tan house left hand side which is 88-1555.

From Hilo airport go on Highway 11 north for about two hours till you come to the sign that reads Milolii. Turn left by the sign drive three miles down the road to Ewalu Avenue, turn right drive down to the stop sign to Waenea Avenue turn left. Drive to the third intersection and turn right on Elima Avenue. Go a half block to a tan house left hand side of the road which is 88-1555. Daniel will have the house open for you and take you on a tour!

About Cheryl Fortman

Aloha. I am Cheryl Fortman the main owner of the property and we bought this house in 2012 after looking at 200 plus homes and condos. I am a first grade teacher in Fallbrook, California, San Diego county. That's been my job for 30 plus years and I still enjoy it! I love the quietness and remoteness of the house as I deal with the San Diego rat race all the time at home. My husband loves the lower bedroom fyi and my fifteen year son loves the gameroom. We might retire one day to this house as I like it better than our house in California. It's much nicer than our house in California! I love hiking around the area and walking to the swimming hole which is two minutes away to snorkel. You take a right on kai and then three or 4 houses down on the left is a little bridge which you cross and you go down lava stairs and rope into the water or jump in. It's kind of Robinson Caruso style which kids love! At the top of the hill I often buy fish from this nice guy whose name starts with a 'D' he has sashimi grade ahi tuna, ono, and sometimes sailfish! I love to travel to the big island- its my home away from home and I am always willing to share house if its only me there and I will give a discounted rate because of that. I had lovely world travelers with me this summer that I really enjoyed and some really nice people from Texas that have rented the house 2 or three times now. I love to go to all the markets on the island- if you are interested in that please ask me about them and I would be happy to tell you about them. House is full of Art I have bought on the big island and from home goods store in San Diego. This vacation rental was a dream for two years that finally came true. The house is all I talk about when I am in California- that's how special this house is. Thank you for renting it! I really appreciate that!

Why Cheryl Fortman chose Captain Cook

The neighbours are great and have a live and let live philosophy which I appreciate! I love the look of the black lava rock against the blue ocean. The reason I bought the house was the humongous deck, the sunsets, the panoramic Pacific ocean view as you come down the hill and the ocean view from the deck. The sunsets are phenomenal and I almost have a 190 degree ocean view from the house. The kings trail is close to the house and you can hike on it. I like driving 5 minutes into the little fishing village and hiking into Honomolino. Kayaking in papa Bay are great! I still havent come at Christmas time and winter when the whales are there as house is always rented out then but I hope to in the future. I also hear you can hear the whales singing. I hear you can kayak around the whales but I haven't ever done it. Often there are pods of dolphins in the bay and I love the little mailbox library up on Umi street but you gotta put a book in to take one! I love reading books on the deck and drinking a Mai Tai there at sunset. Also, there is a washer and dryer downstairs which a lot of people appreciate.

the deck, the sunsets, the king bed in the master, the walks, the oceanview, the nautical charm of the house, the fish wall in the family room and the family/living room, the gameroom which my son and kids from all over the world have enjoyed

Wonderful getaway!

The house was great. All amenities, including a gorgeous view of the ocean, with the hope of seeing whales calving in the bay. Daniel, the manager provided very used info about must do activities. He really helped to make the stay special. Be prepared for the long and winding road that gets you from the main highway to the community in which the house is located. We recommend it very highly!

I love the drive down the road as I think one of the better views of the island is on it. The big Island involves a lot of driving and the12 minute road to get to the house from highway 11 is paved.

Secluded Vacation Rental with Amenities!!

This secluded rental was exactly as represented in the listing, in fact we got there and were surprised by how much roomier it was than we thought it would be from the pictures. It easily accommodated our group of 10 and afforded enough privacy. Pre-arrival communication was responsive and the check in and check out processes were entirely hassle free. Daniel, the local point of contact, was a very engaging and knowledgeable resource. There was a pamphlet with lots of pearls about local sights and amenities and Daniel was readily available for any questions or clarifications that came up. The place was clean and very well furnished and there were plenty of linens. The kitchen was well appointed and all of the appliances were functioning. We enjoyed the panoramic view from the deck morning, noon and night. It was a perfect place to get away from it all, yet just a 30 minute drive to several of the most iconic sights on the Island. Recommend without reservation; you will love your stay.

A great home base during our stay on Big Island Feb 2018

Upon arrival (very late at night ) the house was open, lights o and ready for our weary bodies to crash after 24+ hours of traveling from Ontario Canada with 2 layovers!

We met Daniel in the morning with our welcome greeting and he gave us some great added info, including the recommendation of visiting The Place of Refuge which we did the following day and thoroughy enjoyed.

Cheryl's home is well appointed, kitchen is well equipped, lots of towels...helpful additions like ice packs and boogie boards and beach chairs were also helpful items we made use of every day.

It was just y daughter during our visit so we mainly used the top floor of the home, enjoyed coffee and breakfast on the upper deck almost every morning and enjoyed the sounds of the waves through every window when we finally went to bed each night.

We visited Big Island last year and stayed over on Hilo side of island, this time we wanted something closer to Kona side.

I chose this home due to the available beach items, (boogie boards, beach chairs, and kayaks) we brought our snorkel and scuba gear.

We were about a 40-60 minute drive to manyof the activities we planned near Ali'i drive drive and north Kona.

We were about an 60-70 min drive to airportand about 90 minutes to Hapuna Beach.

Additionally we did try again to visit the Visitors Centre on Mauna Loa this year for star gazing(about 2 hours from saddle road to the house) but unfortunately stars were not clear that night.

We love visiting Carl Smith Beach (Hilo area) and highly recommend the trip over to Hilo to enjoy a visit to that area and swim with turtles. A nice mid-way stop along the way is the bakery---dont miss their donuts!

From the house its about 70-90 minutes to Volcanoes National park to walk through the Thurston Lava Tube, and while there this year we checked out the Petroglyphs....also highly recommend. We also stopped at the bakery that day as well again...since its a half way mark towards the Volcanoes park Entrance :)

Cheryl was excellent to deal with and respond quickly to questions leading up to our arrival. She checked in with us via email when we arrived and the welcome package has all needed contact info.

Lots of towels so was nice not having to pack those.

Beds are soft (only minor draw back)

The house is located in Miloli'i Beach area. Getting to the beach area is only a few minutes by car buy the small bay if rocky and rough.

Overall - highly recommend booking this house we had great stay!

The king bed in the master is only three years old and has a padded top but it is a Certa high quality mattress and the other mattress is a three years mattress. You guys must like your mattresses super firm.

You descend down a curvy hill from highway 11 to the house. I love it because it has one of the best ocean views on the island and this is where the Kona people build their vacation homes. Road is paved, and curvy. After a Five Minute Drive and 20 Minute Hike to Honomalino Bay Black Sand Beach. Year Round Spinner Dolphin Sightings and Seasonal Humpback Whale Watching from House., Great hiking trail to Captain Cook Monument, Shell Collecting, Boogie Boarding,, Kayaking,, Saturday Flea Market, Spearfishing, Shore Fishing, Volcano Park (I HR away), Lava Boat Trip (2 Hrs away), Nighttime Manta ray Swim- hang loose north of Kona , Excellent Kona Luau -Whales there in Papa Bay December through mid march and sometimes into April .
