This is a cottage in the private beach community in the Primehook National Wildlife Refuge which has over 8,000 acres of untouched beauty. The community is 5 miles off Route 1 and is relaxed!
You can swim and fish right in front of the house; you can be on the beach at anytime (sleep on it if you like) and may have a bonfire in the evening if it's not too windy! As mentioned previously, we have a new patio where you can grill, eat and view the beach as well as enjoy the late afternoon breeze.
The cottage has three bedrooms but can accommodate additional sleepers via couch, day bed, and air mattress.
10 minutes to Lewes; 20 minutes to Rehoboth and Dewey beaches if you want shopping (outlets and small, unique stores), movies, restaurants, jet ski, bike rentals, etc.
Keywords: 3Br/1Ba Beach cottage, new AC/Heat, new windows, new septic. Right on beach. Can have bonfires on beach, sleep on beach, etc. Dogs can be off-leash.
My husband grew up in Milton, DE which is the next town over. We live north of Baltimore and wanted a getaway and eventually a place to retire!
Sandy Zelensky purchased this cottage in 1999
Primehook beach is quiet and the people are friendly. It is away from hustle and bustle but you can drive to get anything you want in about 10-20 minutes.
We enjoy the privacy and quiet. It is also a safe place for kids to be able to ride their bikes, swim, walk the beach, etc.
Also stayed in August 2010.
We very much enjoyed our time here! Our welsh terrier loved the beach.
My family and I enjoyed our week-long stay at Prime Hook Beach! We fished, relaxed on the beach, took walks, had a bonfire and roasted smores, and just enjoyed our time together. The cottage was well equipped, clean, and located on a quiet strip of beach. The only reason that our stay did not receive five stars was because I placed a call to Sandy prior to arriving on Saturday and never received a reply back from her. The other minor drawback was that the windows in the two bedrooms did not have screens and so we could not open them to let in the fresh air.
Very tidy and sweet. We were looking for a quiet beach getaway and this was perfect for that. If you want to be closer to the action (activities, restaurants) this isn't the spot for you. Although Primehook is 10 miles from Lewes it takes 20 minutes or so to get there from this beach house by the time you drive through the nature preserve. It is very lovely there.
We had a family reunion and rented 2 other homes on the same street. Sandy's house was very quaint, had more room than we thought based upon pictures, and was airy and comfortable. The air conditioner cools main room and if you keep doors open will cool the bedrooms too. The house was equipped with all that was needed - including a huge TV which helped on a rainy day for the kids. Right on the beach so very relaxing and easy. We grilled almost every night and there is a lovely patio with chairs to eat dinner. Kitchen is small but that was ok...we didn't want to spend time cooking anyway. We would definately rent again from Sandy. She was attentive and even emailed us information about a great 4th of July parade that happens down Shore Drive which our kids participated in! House was clean and well maintained.
My wife and I greatly enjoyed the chance to spend time at the beach cottage, we had a lovely stay! It is a wonderful place that captures a time a heritage that is rare to find these days. The property was clean and well maintained. The location is wonderful, a relatively short drive away from Lewes and other beach facilities. The beach was wonderful and peaceful. The view from the sunroom was also wonderful and allowed us full view of fireworks in Lewes on a cool evening. The wildlife refuge is a wonderful place for hiking, bird and nature watching. We saw many migratory waterfowl during our winter stay. We also saw deer, fox and other wildlife.

My wife and our dogs and I really enjoyed our stay at Prime Hook. It is a simple and small residential beach where the dogs could run off leash. The location is convenient for us (from Northern Virginia). The house reminds me of what a beach house should look like, simple and functional. The owner is very responsive. We've had to make last-minute plans as a result of an unpredictable schedule and both of our visits have been flawless. There is no shopping, only houses on the beach so plan on a 30-minute drive for supplies. (The advantage is that the beach is very uncrowded.)
The waterfront does collect trash from the bay (plastic, styrofoam, cans, etc.) so I learned to just carry a bag with me and pick up litter as I walk. The bay also attracts a lot of horseshoe crabs. I look for living ones and toss them back in the water before the seagulls can launch their attack. Keeps me busy and the dogs are busy too.
Sandy.....Before the summer left us and we got too busy with school etc etc....I wanted to tell you we just had thee best vacation ever at your little beach house ....we were very sad to leave
and will always have the fondest memories of our trip to Primehook.....we even walked from the house on the beach to Broadkill Beach and had lunch!!!!!!!.....we saw all kinds of life in the little pools made by low tide on the way and we and the dogs were swimming as we went ...the tide was out so it was just great....we had a fire on the beach one night (during a meteor shower!)...and
the house was great, i asked the kids if they wanted to go to Rehoboth and they said no they wanted to stay at the beach house ( I was happy about that!!!)....Everyone there was "chill" and just relaxing(our dogs swam and were also tuckered out ) ...thanks again...just sandy
Because Prime Hook is a national wildlife refuge, there are lots of birds that migrate through. You can bird watch on the road coming in to the beach area; visit the small museum at the Prime Hook NWR headquarters; launch boats and canoes there and use the photography blind to take wildlife photos. You can also launch boats up at Slaughter Beach, about 7-10 miles away.
Delaware Paddlesports in Lewes will deliver and pick up rental kayaks. One of our renters said they were great! Call them at (302)645-7300 for further info.
Other payment schedules can be arranged.
