BEACH VIEW, BEACH ACCESS AND BEACH QUALITY:

Be sure that beach VIEW really means a GREAT beach view and that you are located so close to the beach that you can actually hear the waves! Many of the home rental listings on the island use vague terms such as "just steps to the beach", "a very short walk to the beach", "just minutes from the beach" or "a stone's throw from the beach" to give the impression that they are located very close to the beach when they actually are not. "The Compass Rose" is located just 50 yards from the best/widest beach on the island. There is a BIG difference between getting a VERY LIMITED beach view 500 yards from the beach and a GREAT beach view with surf sounds just 50 yards from the beach. So always verify each property's EXACT location!

Another key beach consideration is beach ACCESS. See "Gulf Beach Access Map" in the listing's photos. The ONLY public beach access to the Gulf beach (with allowed golf cart parking) is located at the end of Butterfly Shell Drive. “The Compass Rose” is located only 50 yards from and a very short walk to the Public Beach Access. Renters from other homes on the island need to drive to the Public Beach Access with all of their beach gear loaded on their golf carts! So always verify each property's STREET!

The last key beach consideration is beach QUALITY: there are some sections of the Gulf beach that have become so eroded that they are unusable (see photo in the "Gulf Beach Access Map"), specifically in front of the following streets: Sea Air Lane, Oro Pesos Lane, Hidden Lane, Hodgepodge Lane and Escondido Lane. So again always verify each property's STREET!

THE HOUSE:

"The Compass Rose" is a fabulous deal compared to 4-bedroom beachfront rentals on the island. Being only 50 yards from the beach and with unobstructed views from most angles, "The Compass Rose" is just like beachfront! And when you add in all of the amenities that we offer, the end result is a price/value combination that just can't be beat!

Pamper yourself with the finest amenities in this 4000 sq. ft. (2500 under air), 4 bdrm. dream beach house spread out over 5 levels. You can indulge yourself in countless luxury appointments such as the fine goose down comforters, plush monogrammed terrycloth bathrobes, dreamy bedroom settings and a fully-equipped gourmet kitchen by Kraft-Maid with Jenn-Air cook top and Nespresso espresso/cappuccino maker. Bathed in warm natural earth tones, the recurrent theme is one of a distant island getaway, featuring an array of exotic materials such as bamboo, teak and natural fibres complemented by a selection of tasteful antiques.

The main living area has a 15 feet high cathedral ceiling with bamboo lattice designed to simulate a tiki hut, complete with its own bar, sofas with top grain imported Italian leather, Persian rug, 19th century accent pieces and home theater/entertainment center. Due to the special upside down design of the home, the bedroom level is lower down and the living levels are higher up, thereby affording great views from the areas where you spend the most time. There are also decks on 4 levels (2 of which are screened).

The views will remain with you forever: the rooftop patio, at a height of nearly 40 ft. above ground level, offers 360 degree views of the Gulf of Mexico, Captiva Pass and the State Land Preserve.

What is included: Golf cart(s), use of all North Captiva Island Club facilities, bedding, linens, bath towels, beach towels, chairs and umbrellas, garbage bags, iron, ironing board, basic supply of toilet and facial tissues, paper towels, soaps (hand, kitchen and laundry), dishwasher tablets and dish soap and clean-up after departure.

What is not included: Charcoal for BBQ grill, food/beverages/seasonings, shampoo, shower soap, transport to and from the airport, and water taxi to and from North Captiva Island.

This is our personal "home away from home" and we continually maintain/take care of it as if we lived there all year long. You can rest assured that there will be no surprises and that "what you see is what you get!". In addition, in order to maintain "quality control" and provide our guests with top-notch service throughout their stay, we personally rent out our property and have our own private service staff.

Also included in 'The Compass Rose' house rental package is unlimited free access to all of the facilities of the North Captiva Island Club. The club has 2 swimming pools (Olympic size heated and cooled + lap size heated) and a jacuzzi. The brick paved pool area is over 14,000 square feet, with over 80 chaise lounges, plus a Spa facility with steam room, sauna, air conditioned changing rooms and lockers. For the active type, North Captiva Island Club also has two lighted Har-Tru tennis courts, a fitness room, basketball court, and sand volleyball court. You can then relax with your favorite cocktail at Hidden Cove Pool Bar, where a pool side lunch is also available. Kayaks, bicycles, paddle boats and fishing gear rentals are all available at no charge at North Captiva Island Club.

OCCUPANCY:

• Occupancy is strictly restricted to the number of tenants that are reserved for (maximum of 10). At no time can there be more than a total of 10 people in the house.

• Tenants will be in default of the Vacation Rental Agreement if they have more tenants in the house than the number they have reserved for or if there are more than 10 people in the house at any time.

• We will rent only to family groups, couples, and responsible adults over the age of 25. Inquiries are not accepted from the following: student groups, groups associated with a wedding event or if the rental of "The Compass Rose" is associated in any fashion with the rental of other properties at the same time on North Captiva Island (such as, but not limited to, family reunions and corporate events).

• Pets considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to owner’s approval.

• Violations of any occupancy conditions will be grounds for immediate eviction without refund of rent and/or non-reimbursement of the security deposit.

THE ISLAND:

North Captiva Island is the best-kept secret in Florida: only four miles long and half a mile wide, North Captiva is a Caribbean-like barrier island accessible only by a 20-minute boat ride. There are no cars and no paved roads (golf carts only on sand roads!)

For those guests who like to explore the island, there are 20 miles of bike paths, exclusive of the State Preserve areas. There are also four restaurants on the island: The Boat House, Mango's Island Grill, Barnacle's, and Over The Waterfront.

Our family first started renting properties on North Captiva Island in 1999. We immediately fell in love with the island and, after 4 years of renting, decided to build our very own house in this piece of paradise!

"The Compass Rose" is the ultimate family vacation getaway with something for everyone! We are conveniently located only 50 yards from the Gulf of Mexico beach and have numerous amenities including a private heated swimming pool with adjacent BBQ/dining area and vast ground floor sheltered lounge/games area including a ping-pong table, a foosball table and a corn hole (sandbag) game. We also have high speed wireless internet, 4 flat screen TV's with over 200 DirecTV channels, various board games and a selection of books.

We stayed here for the first week of March and used it as a recovery from the awful midwest winter. Our first visit to the island and it is a great place to get away and relax. The house is very nice, very clean and well maintained. There are lots of nice touches - cable, direct tv, nespresso machine, etc. It's location is great since it is near the reserve and a very private part of the beach. The water views are outstanding from a lot of areas of the house and the screened porch is great for sitting outside in the breeze. I would recommend Compass Rose highly.

Excellent Week

We stayed the latter part of May/early June and thoroughly enjoyed the house and island.

Leading up to our stay, Dan (owner) was extremely helpful in answering questions, and providing plenty of details to help in our preparation.

We appreciated the lay out of the house, the amenities, and most of all the views from the many decks. Unfortunately, Tropical Storm Alberto affected the weather in the early part of our week, but we greatly appreciated having the convenience of a pool to run out to and hang out whenever we did catch a break in the rain.

The house is well appointed and stocked, including plenty of cleaning supplies (we actually brought extra with us just in case, but never needed them).

All in all, a great week (despite the weather!), a great house, and a great island that we definitely plan to visit again in the future.

Beautiful Family Vacation at the beautiful Compass Rose

We enjoyed our vacation at the Compass Rose. The home is beautifully decorated and is located on a prime area on the island, with beautiful water and beach views. This was our fourth time on the island, and we would love to stay at the Compass Rose again.

House and location undeniably beautiful, other experiences less than ideal

My family did enjoy our week on the island and the beautiful Compass Rose. There were two issues that I did not appreciate. The hot tub was not in service for the week of our stay. This was never disclosed to us prior to our decision to book the property. I am sure that this happened between when we booked and when we stayed, but it was very disappointing for our teenage kids. There was no apparent effort to get it repaired either before or during our stay.

The second more troubling issue was the way the owners interacted with us during our stay. I fully understand that owners have to worry about abusive renters and people who deceive but to treat every renter as a suspected criminal was not appreciated. This owner emailed us a picture of us having more than 10 people on the unit's roof. We fully disclosed how many people would be staying (7) and how many friends were on the island and that we would be traveling between locations and that there would be times where the families meet up prior to going to the beach or going elsewhere. The email I received was rude and threatening and it bothered me because I had so many positive email interactions prior to our stay and our other guests had a very nice interaction with the owner. There was absolutely no reason to send us a threatening email. A better approach would have been to use polite language and a courtesy reminder of their financial exposure in the property. It turned me off in a huge way and it creeped us out that we were photographed. I won't be staying on the property again.

Owner's Response: In the Rental Agreement that they completed/signed, the renters indicated that there would be 7 guests in the house. THEY NEVER DISCLOSED THAT THEY WOULD ALSO HAVE FRIENDS RENTING OTHER HOMES NEARBY WHO WOULD ALWAYS BE STAYING AT OUR HOUSE AND INCREASING THE OCCUPANCY TO OVER 25. Had they done so, we would have refused the rental. In a photo taken by one of our neighbors from an iPhone about ½ mile away (far from being “creepy”), it can be seen that the renters had about 15 people on the rooftop deck (in addition to there being many more people in the house and on the ground floor deck), bringing the total number of people in the house in the 25 range! On our website listing and in our Rental Agreement, the following are clearly indicated: #1) Occupancy is strictly restricted to the number of tenants that are reserved for (maximum of 10). At no time can there be more than a total of 10 people in the house. #2) Tenants will be in default of the Rental Agreement if they have more tenants in the house than the number they have reserved for or if there are more than 10 people in the house at any time. #3) Inquiries are not accepted if the rental is associated in any fashion with the rental of other properties at the same time on North Captiva Island. #4) Violations of any occupancy conditions will be grounds for immediate eviction without refund of rent or security deposit. Despite being in clear violation of the Rental Agreement under which we had the right to immediately evict these renters without refund of rent or security deposit, we nonetheless elected to not pursue this avenue and instead sent them a respectfully-worded email in which we reminded them that they were not respecting the Rental Agreement, asking them for their understanding and cooperation in ensuring that this would not occur again during the remainder of their stay, expressing our desire for them to enjoy the rest of their vacation and informing them that our caretakers would be driving by during the rest of the week to monitor the situation. Based on the above facts, we had expected that the renters would be very appreciative of not having been evicted or not having their Security Deposit withheld as a result of their clear violation of the Rental Agreement. Their negative comments and sentiments of indignancy therefore come as a complete surprise and a major disappointment!

Relaxing Getaway

Our family had a fun, relaxing time at the Compass Rose! Our children especially enjoyed the heated pool and all the games on the pool level. The adults loved relaxing on the many decks and taking in the views. The owners as well as the care takers were very prompt and attentive in responding to any questions we had. Can't wait to go back!

This was the relaxing vacation we were looking for.

We absolutely loved the location, the house and the views. Oh the views!! My husband has never seen the sunrise in his life since he is not a morning person and is always in a rush. He was forced to slow down and relax so much that he witnessed 2 sunrises and a few sunsets and one of each one of the days. We were worried about running out of things to do but we never ran out of fun. We rented a boat for the week and enjoyed island hopping for dining and shopping. But the truth is, all of us preferred our own secluded island getaway. It is a must do!

Nice house but needs maintenance.

The owner is very helpful and responds to emails promptly. The house is large and the game and pool area is extremely nice. The views are beautiful if you are willing to go up to the roof outside or to the mezzanine where there is a sofa.

This house is advertised as a 4 bedroom 50 yards from the beach. What it doesn't say and what the photos don't show is that there are 2 houses in front of this one and the house in front and to the right towers over the pool area and is not private and blocks the view. This is not beachfront. It would be 50 yards to the beach if you could walk there on the little path shown in the photos, but you can't. You have to take a golf cart ride around the houses in front of this one and to the left to get to the beach. This is not a 4 bedroom. There are 3 bedrooms and a front living room- type area with a sofa sleeper (horribly uncomfortable) and no dresser, closet or anything for belongings that is counted as the 4th bedroom.

All of the bedrooms are on the lowest level so no view. We felt a little duped when we arrived, as it was not what we expected. The pool was heated but it was set at 74° which is too cold especially for kids. This house is in dire need of maintenance. Most of the lightbulbs in the ceiling were burned out making it very hard to see. The first morning we tried to use the toaster and it tripped the house breaker because the cord was taped in a crude fashion and it shorted out. We spent the other 10 mornings using the oven broiler to toast things. The screws and nails are all popping up out of the deck that trip you and cut you if you have bare feet. The spiral staircases have broken welds that need immediate attention. Yikes! The lamps on the bar were also rewired and taped with duct tape. We tried to use them due to the lack of light in the house. Only one worked and we quit using the other one for fear of that shorting out. The kitchen is not supplied with much to prepare meals. There are no mixing bowls, and no baking pans or baking dishes of any kind except 2 cookie sheets. There were pots and pans and dishes to eat on, and THAT'S IT. On an island without much for restaurant options, this is unacceptable. The doors drag on the floor because no one cut them off when the floors were replaced. Some we just could not move and others made a horrible noise. If you are offered the owners golf cart say no! It's a piece of junk and no one on the island could fix. Electrical AGAIN!

Owner's Response: After 32 consecutive "5-Star" reviews, it just had to happen! After receiving numerous profanity-laced texts from these guests and being told by my caretakers that they were piling 6 people on the golf cart (resulting in damages to the cart's windshield and frame), this review comes as no surprise. The house is described EXACTLY as it actually is: as can be seen in the drone pics and the pics from the living room deck, mezzanine and rooftop deck, the house is only 50 yards from the beach and with a superb beach VIEW (the house is not described anywhere as being beach FRONT). Their feedback that they apparently needed to drive the golf cart only 50 yards to get to the beach was especially interesting! As described and as shown in the pics, there are 4 bedrooms, one of which is a Sitting Room with a sofa bed suitable for children. They also complained that "the bedrooms are on the lowest level so no view". However, the following is clearly indicated in the listing: "due to the special upside down design of the home, the bedroom level is lower down and the living levels are higher up, thereby affording great views from the areas where you spend the most time". The house was custom designed by an architect with this exactly in mind! So how could this be a "surprise"? The house is fully equipped with all kinds of amenities including a fully-equipped kitchen, something that has been noted and appreciated in all of our other reviews. If the toaster broke (these things do happen!), all they had to do was call our caretakers, who would have brought a replacement the same day: but they never even called our caretakers to inform them of this! As the expression goes, "you can't please all of the people all of the time" (no matter how hard you try!).

There are No Cars and No Paved Roads (transportation is only by electric golf cart on sand roads!). Nearby Captiva Island and Sanibel Island were once just like North Captiva until bridges brought traffic and hordes of tourists to their shores.

One word describes North Captiva Island best: Nature! On our pristine white beaches, you will find all kinds of rare and exotic Seashells. We also offer world-class Sport-fishing for tarpon, snook and redfish. A large part of the island is a 700-acre State Land Preserve for the protection of endangered wildlife: migratory and nesting birds include osprey, herons, egrets and pelicans. Manatees and dolphins are regular sights from our shores!

Other Activities: shelling, nature walks

Golf: Alden Pines Country Club is a Bermuda grass semi-private course located on nearby Pine Island. It is easily accessible from Pineland Marina (take Island Girl Charters ferry service from North Captiva Island). Water comes into play on many holes and narrow fairways make for a challenging game.

Fort-Myers RSW Airport, a private optional shuttle service is available to bring you grocery shopping and to deliver you to the water taxi. Once on the island, you will be greeted and brought to the house. Porters will assist you with luggage and groceries.

Refundable Damage Deposit £379.55

• Rates include 1 golf cart. 2nd golf cart: $280 + taxes.
• No Smoking
• We will rent only to family groups, couples, and responsible adults over the age of 25.
• Inquiries are not accepted from the following: student groups, groups associated with a wedding event or if the rental of "The Compass Rose" is associated in any fashion with the rental of other properties at the same time on North Captiva Island (such as, but not limited to, family reunions and corporate events).
• Occupancy is strictly restricted to the number of tenants that are reserved for (maximum of 10). At no time can there be more than a total of 10 people in the house.
• Tenants will be in default of the Vacation Rental Agreement if they have more tenants in the house than the number they have reserved for or if there are more than 10 people in the house at any time.
• Violations of any occupancy conditions will be grounds for immediate eviction without refund of rent and/or non-reimbursement of the security deposit.

  • Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
