Fabulous Riverside Boathouse on the River Thames in London

Bedrooms 3
Property type chalet
Minimum Stay 3 - 5 nights

About the property

Boathouse/Chalet, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Ripple is a newly built, architect designed house brought all the way from the forests of Transylvania! Set on the tidal reach of the River Thames on Eel Pie Island at Twickenham, Ripple combines comfort with style. Roof lights make it light and bright with its high open eaved ceiling, glass gables and spacious living and kitchen area - open the glass doors on to the decking, watch the boats go by and enjoy the pretty landscaped garden. The interior is entirely wood-lined with wooden floors, all beautifully painted and after a busy day sightseeing in London, this is just the place to return to rest and relax.

Ripple has a child safe garden with railings at the waters edge, a BBQ and garden gazebo. Lots of DVDs, toys and books for children and a wonderful playground about 10 minutes walk away. The master bedroom has an en suite shower, wash basin and W.C.; the twin bedroom has 'zip and link' beds so the two single beds can be converted into a queen sized bed if required. Bunk beds (one on top of the other) in the 3rd bedroom are full sized for adults or children. All the beds are ready and made up for your arrival including towels. There is a washer/dryer in the family bathroom (washing powder supplied), walk-in-shower, wash basin and W.C.: soaps and toilet rolls for your arrival. The dining table in the living area seats 8 and the kitchen is well equipped for your cooking requirements with all new appliances: dishwasher (powder supplied)hob, oven, microwave, toaster, fridge/freezer, blender...all brand new! We make sure the cupboards are stocked with basic foods - instant coffee, tea, sugar, oil, salt and pepper - and some fresh food for your arrival. 2 dark grey sofas allow you to relax and watch the flat screen TV in comfort or view the river and birdlife. Free high speed internet access is available, along with a spare laptop and printer.

Eel Pie Island is situated in the middle of the Thames at Twickenham, West London. It was given its name in the 16th century for supplying King Henry VIII with eel pies! It became famous again in the 1960's when various British rock bands, including the Rolling Stones and The Who, performed at a dance hall which has since been demolished. This small, car-free island with its friendly village atmosphere, has approximately 35 dwellings, 3 working boatyards, a rowing club, yacht club, a variety of artists studios and a number of houseboats. Access is via a footbridge from Twickenham and Ripple is 30 yards from the bridge.

Twickenham High Street, with its full range of shops, is 200 yards from the island's footbridge. Explore the narrow, old English lanes along by the river, past the medieval St Mary's Church and the Mary Wallace Theatre owned and run by the Richmond Shakespeare Society. Book yourself a table at the 17th century White Swan Pub where the food and beer are excellent. Within easy walking distance you can reach the famous Twickenham Rugby Stadium, the historic houses of Marble Hill and Ham House and a scenic towpath walk takes you to Richmond-upon -Thames where the Theatre often presents plays before they are shown in London's West End.

Twickenham British Rail Station is an 8 minute walk away and a frequent train service takes you to London Waterloo in 20 minutes. Heathrow Airport is a 25 minute taxi ride and can be reached by public transport. Gatwick Airport can also be easily reached by train. We would be happy to advise you on the details of these journeys. You do not need to hire a car to enjoy this part of west London because travel links are excellent but if you do choose to hire a car there is public carparking along Twickenham riverside opposite Ripple (altogether a 3 minute walk from car to Ripple). There are no designated parking places but there's not a problem with parking and permits are available from us if you need them. Within a 15 minute drive are Hampton Court (Henry VIII's Palace), Richmond Park (Henry's hunting ground), The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, and Sandown Race Course at Esher.

We have had a holiday rental home on the site of Ripple for 21 years- we live a 20 minute drive away- and 7 years ago (2010) completed the building of a brand new Ripple to our design. Our children have grown up with the river and the eccentricities of island life and we love the peace and quiet of this beautiful part of London. We have found that our visitors have enjoyed the added adventure of staying on an island whilst visiting London. And for all those honeymooners... we have now been written about in 'London for Lovers' by Sam Hodges and Sophie Vickers so let Ripple be a special place for you too!

'He who is tired of London is tired of life' Samuel Johnson 1777. Come and stay at Ripple and discover the delights of London.

About Sarah Mumford

We have two sons aged 27 and 22 and we have spent many happy weekends and holidays on Eel Pie Island while the children were growing up. It was here that they learnt to row and sail and we as a family became part of the island community enjoying raft races, island BBQs and many a pirate party for our children's birthdays. We are both self employed and Ripple has been a peaceful haven for us where we have shared so many happy memories with friends, neighbors and family. Come and be part of the 'Ripple' experience!

Sarah Mumford purchased this chalet in 1996

Why Sarah Mumford chose Twickenham

For 32 years we have lived in west London with a view of the River Thames, and our love of boats and the water led us 21 years ago, to buy 'Ripple', our holiday home on Eel Pie Island, just 20 minutes drive away from where we live. We discovered the island on one of our boating adventures, saw a house for sale, and were captivated by the idea of holidaying in a wooden chalet off shore, in London! We found that crossing the bridge helped transport us to a place of rest and refreshment that was distinctive from our 'mainland' home. Over the years we have kept a variety of boats on our pontoon - sailing, motor, rowing - and have many great memories of boating adventures. Ask our boys how one of our engines came to be on the river bed!!

What makes this chalet unique

London - capital city of England and a great base for seeing the rest of Britain and Europe. Ripple, a unique holiday home in a beautiful part of London right on the River Thames. Staying on Eel Pie Island gives you peace and quiet, you'll be woken by birdsong and not airplanes, and you can easily access central London with the excellent travel links. Twickenham is on the British Rail network (fast train to Waterloo), Richmond (2 miles away) is on the District Line on the Tube, and Heathrow and Gatwick Airports are within easy reach by train or taxi. This part of London is steeped in history with many of its own amazing tourist attractions on the doorstep (Royal Palaces, Botanical Gardens, historic houses..) which enables you to combine visiting all the usual sights of central London while living in a vibrant, local community. What our visitors have said: S.Africa: 'We had an excellent visit to London. this is a lovely setting in contrast to busy London. A good place to come back to at the end of a hectic day of sight-seeing' New Hampshire, USA : 'Wonderful, perfect, lovely, walk across the bridge and you're in a different world! Feels like a home away from home' Seattle: 'We feel so fortunate to have based our first trip to London at Ripple. The sights in the City were fabulous. The trains, tube and buses worked well. But maybe best of all was returning home to Eel Pie Island each evening...' Ontario:'Very much enjoyed the history, heat and heavenly breezes of this hospitable neighborhood' Australia:'We can't wait to come again and will tell all our friends that you can have a relaxing family holiday with 3 children in London!'

Very clean and comfortable with beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Sarah Mumford was very pleasant and helpful in making the, reservation. The home was very nice. One minor suggestion would be to fix the squeaky floor in the master bedroom.

Absolute perfection!

  • 5 of 5

Ripple is the perfect place to unwind and relax after days of sight seeing. The home is very well stocked and extremely comfortable. We are a family of 6 and there was more than enough room for everyone to have their own bed and not feel cramped. Twickenham is a delightful town and everyone was very friendly. There are lots of restaurants and a market within easy walking distance. We walked every day to the train station (about 10 min away) and found easy connections to anywhere we wanted to go. Sarah is just amazing! She even had a birthday cake waiting for my husband as I had inquired about bakeries there. She left us a fantastic bottle of wine and some lovely flowers as well. Our only regret with Ripple, was not staying longer. If, no when, we get back to London, Ripple will absolutely be the place we will seek out. Thank you, Sarah, for everything. You have created a world class destination.

A great oasis for a vacation and Sarah did everything possible to make sure we enjoyed our holiday.

  • 5 of 5

Had a great week. Fabulous house and Sarah the owner made sure we had everything we needed for a perfect vacation. The lovely open plan with the large glass doors allowed us to enjoy the river activity and also enjoy the large bird population. A short walk across the footbridge and you are in the middle of the lovely town of Twickenham with great pubs and shops plus train station to London. Thanks again Sarah for making our stay so enjoyable and we will be back.

5 Stars for a Reason

  • 5 of 5

Sarah is wonderful to deal with, exceptionally thoughtful, reliable, charming and her boathouse is everything we expected (from previous 5 star reviews) and more. So smartly designed, in perfect condition, comfortable, full of light, cheery, spotless, odorless, quiet and with all modern conveniences, the best equipped kitchen and dozens of local and UK history and guide books AND just steps across the footbridge from all the resources one could want in charming Twickenham---grocery stores like Waitrose and M&S, coffee shops, bakers, pharmacies, historic inns like the Barmy Arms and the White Swan, a great variety of good restaurants (like the Crown and Masaniello), book stores, the Saturday morning farmers' market---- as well as beautiful walks along the Thames amongst affable locals and their dogs by Marble Hill to Richmond or via foot ferry just minutes by foot from Ripple to historic Ham House or further to vast Richmond Park. A vehicle is unnecessary because the bus system (to nearby Kew Gardens or Hampton Court, for example) is extraordinarily easy (get an Oyster card from the liquor store on Richmond Rd aka York Street) and comprehensive as are the trains of course (the train station being only a 10 minute walk from Ripple). We went planning to return to some of our favorite places in central London but were so pleased with the interesting, satisfying and relaxing local environment we simply stayed to take full advantage of all it had to offer including the rural feel of Eel Pie Island so rich with history, some of its denizens and the personable Brits one meets along the tow path.

An exceptionally rewarding experience. Thank you so much Sarah. Like so many of your guests, we'll be back!
