How did a Hawaiian, Japanese, Jewish hula dancer hook up with a Colorado boy who used to play blue-grass music... and come to be a prolific, creative songwriting team?
After many years living in L.A., the hula dancer moved back to her family home on the island of Kauai in the 80's to help her family. The Colorado boy who picked up a guitar when he was 13 and has played ever since, found Kauai on an impromptu vacation, fell in love with the island and relocated there in the 80's. She, a former x-ray tech and an always-artist who dabbles in paint, glass and ceramics. He, a talented and successful entrepreneur with no fear of new adventures and an always-artist with a guitar.
It was a chance meeting - okay, it was a pick-up - Lynn was a little drunk on champagne, out cruising with a girlfriend and asked the guitar player to dance. The rest reads like your basic happily-ever-after love story – some unusual twists and turns – but your basic love story. On their first date, Thayne plays guitar for Lynn and sings her some of his songs - she is immediately under the ether.
They operate a nice little bed and breakfast, with their beloved cats, Gypsy and Samantha and their environmentally friendly lawnmowers - three St. Croix sheep.
The couple spends as many available hours as possible collaborating on songwriting - Thayne with a guitar and Lynn with a notebook developing lyrics. The boom box has been replaced with a laptop outfitted with Logic software that they keep in their living room - the place where most of their impromptu jam sessions happen and most of their songs are born. Thayne & Lynn Taylor purchased this cottage in 2007
We built this house as a vacation get away for Thayne's family.
All of our guests have remarked on how peaceful it is. How much they enjoyed staying here because of the cool nights and yet a central location from which to base their vacation. We have several repeat customers staying with us year after year.
We are very thankful to be able to offer our guest house as a home away from home. We work hard to make your stay an enjoyable one and are always striving on ways to improve. Here is where you can help. Let us know how your stay was and if there was anything we could do to make our guests feel more at home.
We look forward to seeing you on your return trip.
Thank you and until we meet again:
I stayed here for one week and really enjoyed the cottages. They are located on a hill with other homes in the distance, but it feels quite rural. The decor was much classier than other VRBO's I've stayed in here in the islands. They have paid a lot of attention to details. The suite was immaculate with very nice beds, bedding and towels. Even the smaller suite is good size with a large bathroom and walk in shower. Large deck with nice patio furniture. The back side of the suites and deck are high above the ground at mid tree level so it feels a little like being in a tree house and is very private. The host, Lynn was very nice and helpful in recommending restaurants etc. There are several good restaurants 5 min away. I would recommend arriving in daylight if you can because it will make the turn in from the road easier to negotiate. The island in general is populated with lots of wild chickens and roosters so if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs, as the roosters make quite a racket, even at night!
I would highly recommend these cottages to visitors to Kauai!
My husband, two children and self very recently stayed at this property during our visit to the island. The property is striking in it's carefully designed guest house, a beautiful extension of the owner's own home. The architecture will really put you in a Bali mindset! The grounds are lovely and the sheep charming - our children really loved to see them. The night sky is breathtaking. It's impossible not to feel peaceful here. This was a prefect place to return to each night after a day at the beach. The privacy and quietness is exactly what you look for in a vacation. Thank you so much for sharing a part of your home with us, Lynn and Thayne!
This lovely little property was ideal for us (2 sisters) as we could each have our own space as well as breeze in and out of the others' room. Lovely design and decor as well as a great bathroom made the spaces a good place to come back to after a day at the beach or hiking.
We loved being in Kalaheo with it's 'real' people and great local coffee shop.
Thayne and Lynn were welcoming and respectful of our privacy.
We stayed at Kauai Garden Cottages for five nights in July 2013 and had a wonderful stay.
The place is truly unique. The rental cottage is a stand-alone house, split into two parts. Both parts, which you rent together, have a bedroom and a bathroom and have their own entrances. One side is bit larger than the other and has a sitting area. The owner's home is next door, connected by a covered walkway, but is completely separate from the rental cottage.
The unique layout of the cottages was perfect for our group. We were a group of four--a married couple in one room, and two friends in the other room. There was a futon that we set up in the room with the friends so they didn't have to share a queen bed. The two rooms share a common deck, but had privacy in both rooms.
The cottage was built with an incredible attention to detail. The photos on VRBO's website (which are nice and professional) very accurately show what the place looks like. Beautiful hardwoods, interesting architecture, very high ceilings, fine craftsmanship, tropical vibe, interesting Balinese style. The cottages were spotlessly clean. Everything worked. The furniture was nothing fancy, but we didn't expect more at this price.
The setting of the cottages is up in the hills, about a 5 minute drive up the from the highway. The property is both open and has a tropical jungle feel. I'm not sure how far the road goes up into the hills past the cottages, but the property is well past the ordinary residential area near the highway and is in a more pretty rural setting. As is the case in this part of Kauai, the weather seems to change every hour or so. Sun, then rain, then sun, then some wind. It was always a pleasant temperature there.
The hosts, Thayne and Lynn, were welcoming and friendly. They took care of a couple of special requests that we made in advance and otherwise left us to ourselves during our stay (in a good way). I'm sure they would have responded to any issues we might have had, but we had none.
The interesting layout of the place (two separate rooms, rented together) and the location in the hills might not be for everyone, but it was a perfect launching point for us and a great place to spend our mornings and evenings. I'd highly recommend this place to a group of 3 or 4 close friends traveling together, 2 couples traveling together, or a family with kids (parents in one room, kids in another).
My Wife & I found this listing early on during our search for a place to stay in Kauai. As our search progressed, we kept coming back to this listing. We were skeptical this might be a "to good to be true" situation. We are so glad we booked with Thayne and his Wife. Their place is amazing. If you are looking for a secluded, off the beaten path, relaxing place to energize after long days of site-seeing and the beach then this is the perfect place. My Wife and I found the cottage to be perfect for our needs. We loved the architecture and landscaping. We found personal touches, such as beach chairs, cooler, ample beach towels and even a beach blanket as an added benefit to the beautiful setting. If you want to forego the busy major resort atmosphere, then this is the place for you. We would recommend this to any couple wanting to spend some quality time together. Highly recommend
A charming place to stay away from the high prices of the beach resorts. Near the quaint town of Kalaheo. Cool breeze felt fabulous after days at the beach. A fabulous and affordable way to experience Kauai.
