About Mr. David Wechsler

My name is Doreen Wieder, and I have owned the property with my husband since the early 1960's.

Mr. David Wechsler purchased this house in 1961

Why Mr. David Wechsler chose Shorewood

We bought the land, and built the house in 1961 as a great summer vacation property, close enough to New York City, but a great getaway. Shelter Island is truly a unique and beautiful place for a vacation. There is plenty to do, both intellectually and just plain fun! Art events, library events, great dining, and many off island activites that are close. Also if you seek it, peace and tranquility in the desirable Shorewood section of the island, where the house is located.

What makes this house unique

Benefits are the recreation, culture and restaurants of Shelter Island. There is a lot of tennis, many beautiful public beaches, one five minutes away. There are two golf courses, kayak rentals, fishing, a big nature preserve (Nature Conservancy Mashomack) with 4 hiking trails, and a lot of biking! If you like the fine arts, there are many artistic events in the many island galleries throughout the summer and year. There is the Perlman Center, a high level classical music camp for string players that offers concerts and open master classes free to the public. There is a fabulous public library with many child and senior activities. There are many fine restaurants on the island. There is close proximity to off island activities in Greenport and the north shore, where there are many vineyards that have events, or the south shore, near Sag Harbor and the Hamptons.

The house is in a lovely, tranquil area and is well equipped for a seaside vacation. Keep the bird feeder filled for a daily show! We had a wonderful time.

Charming, spacious home with big yard close to the beach

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week at this home. We shared the house with friends--four adults and three children ages 6, 4, and 2--and had ample space for all our goings on. The house is close to a small private beach and a short drive or bike ride (there are a few bikes to choose from in the shed) from several bigger, public beaches. When we weren't at the beach, we relaxed in the comfort of several different sitting areas within the house. In the cooler evenings, the backyard offered plenty of grass for catch and two grills for cooking. The house itself is older and the decor reveals eclectic taste and widespread travels. The only knock on the house we had is that kitchen could use an overhaul. Several drawers are hard to close and the space often felt cramped. This comment stems more from an effort to provide a balanced review than a major disappointment. We still cooked amazing meals during our time here. Most of all, we left very relaxed after an incredibly pleasant week in this house.

Wonderful stay on Shelter Island

  • 5 of 5

We loved the house! It was perfect for our family of 4; however, the house could have easily accommodated additional folks. The house was very clean and had everything that we needed - it was well stocked with towels and kitchen items. The outdoor shower was a big hit! We used the bikes to ride to Wades Beach most days - it's an easy ride even with our 8 and 12 year old children. Our family enjoyed the tennis courts and the community beach. David was very responsive during all aspects of the reservation process. Overall, we had a wonderful vacation on Shelter Island!

Shelter Island a magical island experience.

  • 5 of 5

This lovely home in a prime location , just next to a private beach with tennis court provided a lovely base for our magical time on shelter island. The house was in a very quiet area, in fact for the week we never heard a siren, car or anything other then the lovely sound of the water, birds and nature. The house was well equipped with all the essentials needed to stay and cook. We cooked or grilled at the house every day, we brought our own bikes for some of the best riding i have ever done. If you are looking for a quiet serene, comfortable place to stay this is a great choice. The owner was available as needed for any questions we had. thanks david we will be back!!!!!!

Family of Five

  • 4 of 5

Shelter Island is a beautiful place for a quiet relaxing vacation. The property was lovely and close to the beach and tennis. The home is old, but fairly well kept. The upstairs AC was not working while we were there, but only had one uncomfortable night. Nice cross breeze upstairs. The jacuzzi was also out of order. The owner was very friendly and helpful in answering questions and concerns. The home is in need of a very thorough cleaning, but we 5 adults certainly enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: It is true that the air conditioner, a large in wall unit on the second floor, was not working. It was 25 years old, and the compressor malfuntioned. It was replaced almost immediately. The jacuzzi, an indoor tub, was working fine one and a half months prior to rental season. Some previous renters prior to these guests may have damaged it or misused it. The jaccuzi is not being offered as an amenity at this time. The shower in the tub, however, is fine. The house is cleaned thoroughly by a cleaning service before each renter arrives. Sometimes the day before, sometimes the morning before their arrival. Most renters have found this to be more than adequate. The house is from the 1960s, and is of that style. Perspective renters are informed that the house does not have central air conditioning, or a designer kitchen, or a swimming pool, and if these are the amenities they seek, perhaps they should consider renting elsewhere. The great things about the house are its charm, the rate, the island location, the picturesque property, the life style it invites, the art work inside, the privacy, the proximity to the beach and private tennis court, and the overall tranquil vibe that one gets while staying here. Shelter Island is like no other place in the world. It is quite exceptional and fortunate for anyone to spend any length of time at this home, or on Shelter Island in general.

My Husband and I have just returned from a little get away to Shelter Island 9/8 thru 9/11. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the house and property very much. It was lovely walking to the private beach. There is also Wades Beach which you can either drive or bycycle too. It was an end of summer getaway but we were thinking it must be even more beautiful in the fall. The house was very comfortable and roomy. We had family on Shelter Island who rented a house in Shelter island Heights but they liked our rental much better. We ate at Tomatoes and the Dory and everything was great. The other eves we barbequed on the property and sat out side. There are bycycles to use and also private tennis courts. I would return to this property again..Maybe next week.....

The house is located in a secluded part of the island. There is a private tennis court and beach, but Shelter Island is small enough to get anywhere on the island within ten minutes, and close enough to the Hamptons and North Fork to get anywhere in a half hour.
