Svein A. Berg purchased this house in 2005
We bought this house in 2005 when we moved to St. Paul. The house was built in 1889, and has a character and charm that spoke to us. It is in a child friendly neighborhood, with a huge park just and a public tennis court across the street. Mississippi Market, our local Coop with local and organic produce, is just a two minutes walk away.
The house has character, and a great floor plan for having friends over.
Your house was terrific, and again, big thank you for renting it to us. We had some family over and they all commented on what a great house you have, very cozy and Christmas-like.
If you are interested in a beautiful home, that is well taken care of, and working with an owner who is awesome? This is your place! We had a great experience from beginning to end.
Clean older home with charm. It was an easy transition for our small children when they saw the toys & play kitchen! The house has a nice layout for having meals with a large family and the pocket doors helped contain the children to first floor. We had almost everything we needed for cooking. Beds where comfortable and my baby loved the crib. The big bathroom upstairs is nice and the tub with shower handle made cleaning the babies much easier. The tub is very old and need to be resurfaced though. We were able to park one car in garage which was excellent. overall great stay we will consider staying in this property when we visit Saint Paul next time .
This home was absolutely perfect for our family of four. The house itself is a charming Victorian, and while the owners have maintained the period style and details, it has been refurbished in a way that makes it very functional and comfortable. The entire house was very clean and well maintained. The attention to detail was wonderful-- the kitchen was actually the best-stocked kitchen I've seen in a VRBO, the linens were very comfortable and high quality, and extras were easy to find (ie trash bags, tissues, etc). It was so nice to walk in to a place that had plenty of dishes, spices, condiments, appliances-- all in great working condition. Our two small children were thrilled to find the play kitchen and a few toys as well as several children's books-- one less thing to pack! The master bath was in a convenient location; it's not attached to a bedroom so everyone on the top floor has easy access to it. There was plenty of closet space as well. I had a question for the owner during our stay and he responded immediately, as he also did for our communications prior to our stay. I highly recommend this place!
This older but very well-maintained house was ideal for our group of four adults and one infant. Once we decided the allocation of the three bedrooms, we were on auto-pilot; most supplies and items for daily use were amply supplied. The proximity of a grocery store made obtaining staple items very convenient. Modern appliances, internet and TV access and good quality bedding were all appreciated.
Restaurants of different types as well as parks and the R.C. Cathedral were well within walking distance, and the St. Paul zoo and children's museum were just a short drive away.
I should note that, although there was ample street parking, if we had needed to use the detached garage for our medium sized vehicle, that would not have been possible. However, Mr. Berg had made that fact very clear from the outset, and his other detailed instructions made for a smooth stay. Given the age of the house, creaking floor boards were to be expected and did not really detract from our overall very good experience.
Since our group arrived separately and some members reached the house well before the official check-in time, we were very pleased when Mr. Berg allowed us to get in right away rather than wandering the streets of St. Paul. Since there was no problem at all with the house we did not need to bother the caretaker, a friend and neighbor of Mr. Berg's, but he was in touch and offered any help we might need - very comforting to know that a local resource was available.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, albeit a short one of just four nights, at the Berg house, and would definitely place it high on our list should we visit the St. Paul area in the future. We have no hesitation in recommending the house to anyone considering a home rental in the area.
A couple & 2 singles, all family members, shared this house while in town for a family reunion. The house is located in a lovely neighborhood which invites you to take walks & explore. The house has lots of character with original creaky wooden floors and antique furniture, but the bathrooms are remodeled, bright and functional with lovely thick towels. The beds are comfy. It worked well for us, whether we were sharing breakfast of bagels, coffee and fruit from Mississippi Market right down the block around the huge dining room table and planning our day or relaxing on the charming patio in the afternoon sunshine or, our favorite, lounging in the living room with a glass of wine and sharing details of the day in the evening. We did struggle with getting the TV to work & better step by step instructions would be helpful & we did not get a response when we called with questions, (it was during the Vikings/Green Bay football game-so understandable, I guess). However, the owners were very responsive to all my pre-visit questions. We did minimal cooking, but the kitchen appeared stocked with most necessary equipment. . .a couple smaller paring knives would be a nice addition, there were plenty of larger knives. We enjoyed visiting The Muddy Pig right down the street, the Happy Gnome and WA Frost restaurant all walking distance on a lovely fall evening or afternoon. We really felt sharing this charming house in this excellent location made our family visit especially memorable.
Very close to Excel center, Minnesota Public Radio's Fitzgerald Theater, downtown Saint Paul, with easy access to UMN campus, downtown Minneapolis, airport and mall of America (all less than 15 minutes drive).
