The Tree House at Rio Hondo Valley Alpacas- No Cleaning Fee

Bedrooms 1
Property type estate
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Estate, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Take yourself back in time when life was much simpler. Come and stay at a real working farm. The Tree House is located on a 13.5 acre private estate in the Beautiful Valdez Valley just 6 miles north of Taos.

The Tree House is a fairy-tale cottage, hand built by the owner, who is a Taos artist and metal sculptor and furnished with handmade furniture and antiques. There is peace and quite except for the rustling of the giant 200 year old cottonwoods and the rushing of the Rio Hondo River as it makes its' way to the Rio Grande. The Tree House has a balcony that over looks a 100 ft. pond with French geese and Mallard Ducks.

A short walking distance on the other side of the property is the working part of the farm, consisting of Alpacas, Ducks, Geese, Chickens and of course the gentle Great Pyrenees dogs that watch over all. You are welcome to feed the Alpacas, learn about their history and in early summer you might even see a cria (baby Alpaca) or you can walk to he top of the hill and watch the chickens.

There is lots of wildlife in the Valley and you might occasionally see a Bear, coyote, Deer, Fox or even an Elk on the property.

We are located half way between Taos and Taos Ski Valley. About a 10 min drive in either direction.

Come stay with us and enjoy tranquility in the Land of Enchantment.

About Jun Greathouse

Jim and Jun Greathouse moved from Southwest Kansas for the health benefits of the northern New Mexico climate. Both Jim and Jun are art lovers and this also gave Jim an opportunity to cultivate is art career. Jun also has an alternative medical practice specializing in homeopathy and nutrition.

Jun Greathouse purchased this estate in 1996

Why Jun Greathouse chose New Mexico

We purchased this property because of the beauty of Valdez Valley and the mountains. The closeness to the town of Taos and also to Taos Ski Valley.

What makes this estate unique

It is wonderful to sit on the Tree House balcony looking out over the 100 ft. pond watching the ducks and geese and listening to the sound of the river as it makes its' way to the Rio Grande.

Beautiful property with unique home

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed a recent stay with our two children in late June. Upon arrival we were met by the owner Jun who gave a brief tour of the home and property. The property is very unique and beautiful. You are surrounded by the sounds of river and the wind in the beautiful tall trees. There is a fire pit we were able to enjoy to roast marshmallows with the kids and we didn't get a chance to feed them but there are alpacas you can feed with Jun as well as other wildlife showing up at times. There were just small issues, the main one being the lack of air conditioning. It was low 90s in Taos during our stay which I hear is unusually hot but when looking at the listing I didn't see anywhere that there was not any kind of AC (it was listed under the heating and AC tab under rental info once the property was booked). We are from Texas and used to heat but we also are used to AC! The first night we were all very uncomfortable and didn't sleep well. Thankfully we had brought a couple fans. The next couple nights it cooled down a little and was manageable. The other was that it wasn't clear from the pictures that the bedroom is an open loft-style. We go with VRBO's instead of hotels because we have a young child so we like to be able to put him to sleep and we can stay up longer but with the loft style we still had to kind of "shut down" everything so we could put him to bed. Those two things aside everything else was great and I would definitely stay again if back in the area in a cooler time of year.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry that any one was to hot without air conditioning, One would be hard pressed too find a short term rental with air conditioning. Air conditioning is not common in the Taos area. We are high in the mountains with only a very few really hot days and very cool nights. There is a ceiling fan and also a fan in the loft. As for a separate bedroom it is after all a tree house with a loft bedroom and real stairs leading up to it. It is very important to us that every one be happy and have fun while staying with us. Amazing Adventure Early June Arrival

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Rio Hondo Tree house was outstanding. The stay consisted of (4) nights. My wife and I planned this trip for an anniversary R & R get away. This property is very clean, well managed with the surrounding grounds that are very well maintained. The tree house has all the amenities of home. The owners Jun and Jim are very warm and passionate people and were very proud to share their property with us. Jun gave us the entire history of the Alpacas and also allowed us to feed them as well. Their hospitality was overwhelming. The furniture and art work throughout the property all go together to make this property very special. There is even a grill if you decide to cook in for an evening. The location is just far enough from town to make it very peaceful. There are also plenty of restaurants and grocery stores to satisfy your every wish. If you are looking for an experience beyond the norm, this is definitely a choice place to sit back and enjoy nature with the sound of birds, trees and the rustle of the Rio Grande River in the background right from the wrap around deck of the tree house. Thank you Jun & Jim for allowing us to share your beautiful property. This was an amazing trip away from the everyday hustle and bustle. RELAXING, ADVENTURIOUS and AMAZING!

Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We can't say enough nice things about our hosts, Jun and Jim and the gorgeous treehouse acommodations on their alpaca farm. Jun and Jim are wonderful, warm, welcoming, caring people who made us feel at home from the first moment of our arrival. We were greeted by fresh cut flowers on the kitchen table and freshly ground coffee for our breakfast. Jun and Jim are accessible if needed, but respect the privacy of their guests as well. We even got to feed the alpacas which was a nice plus!

The tree house is adorable, spotlessly clean, and just the right size for two. It was a unique experience and close to nature. It feels like home as soon as you walk in. Everything you need is there. The kitchen is small, but totally adequate for two people. The washer and dryer were very much appreciated. The location is removed from the commotion of Taos for quiet, restful morinings and evenings, but close enough to the town and local attractions to be convenient.

Our only regret was that we had only three days there. If we are lucky enough to visit Taos again, Jun and Jim's treehouse will be our first choice to stay. We left feeling as if we had made new friends. Thank you!
