Joe grew up in Florida and Cindy grew up in Ohio. They met on a blind date when they were 16 years old and after a very long distance relationship, married 6 years later while Joe was finishing up a degree in engineering at the University of Florida. They moved to Texas, then back to Florida and eventually, back to Gainesville in 1991. They bought their 5400 sq. foot mansion in 1991 with the dream of opening Gainesville's first Bed and Breakfast Inn. Since then, they began collecting the older homes surrounding the main house and restoring them into the Magnolia Plantation Cottages. Joe continues to operate his engineering office from the 3rd floor of their home and Cindy runs the Inn. Seeing that they needed to find a way to continue running their Inn and still have some life, they built a vacation home in Big Canoe, Georgia and manage to run away every 5-6 weeks for some much needed down time. When they are running the Inn in Gainesville, they rent their Big Canoe property out to others who need to run away from home.
Cindy Montalto purchased this cottage in 2000
Joe attended school at the University of Florida and they always came back to Gainesville for football weekends. In fact they have only missed one home football game since 1982. So coming back to Gainesville was a natural step when they were looking for a home to restore and open as a Bed and Breakfast Inn. The vacation rentals have come about quite by accident when we started getting calls from people in the frozen north looking for some warmth. We have 7 cottages and there are usually a few empty so we thought we would put the idea out there for people looking for a more quiet, laid back vacation or people who were moving to town and needed a place for a few months but did not want to sign a lease.
The safety and security of knowing that the owners live on site but understand the need for privacy. Walking distance to restaurants and shopping. Since this is also a bed and breakfast, you will not find the 'rental' furniture you might find in some other vacation rentals. Much of our furniture are antiques and the linens are high quality.
We are located in the Historic Bed and Breakfast District and within walking distance of Downtown Gainesville's Entertainment District. The rental is 1.5 miles east of the University of Florida and less than 1 hour from the east or west coast of Florida. Three night minimum required for Vacation Rental and a five night minimum over Event weekends.
