“I'm so ready to put my feet up! Thank you for giving me a place to do so with my kids…we are happy to be here at The Rum Runner House again!” -- A returning Phillips Academy parent from afar.
Rum Runner House is a family-oriented property close to Phillips Academy, Brooks School, Pike School and Merrimack College. The home makes it possible to spend quality time with your student and his/her friends during your visit in a very comfortable & flexible manner. Well-stocked with HDTV, classic books & board games to suit a range of tastes, on-site recreational choices also include table tennis, basketball, street hockey, driveway soccer, bocce and Frisbee, baseball & football toss.
Enjoy getting to know your child's friends over a ping pong game, or by sharing nicely grilled steaks out on the fenced-in, brick patio. Have the freedom to spoil them by cooking up favorite family recipes that brings the group as close to your home kitchen as is possible. With the large amount of space, you can arrange with the Academy to welcome your student and friends to spend the night off-campus in 'your home away from home' -- a treat that is especially treasured by students who are themselves a long way from their own families.
In addition, The Rum Runner House has become a favorite venue of corporate managers looking for an excellent extended stay property for their valued employees. Such guests have included the New England headquarters of a Presidential campaign, financial executives and performance artisans.
The property has remained in the same family's hands since its purchase in 1947. The experience of sending its youth to far-away schools created an awareness of how the residence could provide a wonderful 'home away from home' for familes from around the USA -- and the globe -- entrusting their childrens' education to nearby New England private schools.
Steve purchased this house in 1947
Located in sight of the Memorial Bell Tower at Phillips Academy -- the ground on which colonial troops mustered prior to engagement in the American Revolutionary War -- the property is named after the B-24 Liberator heavy bomber in which its original resident earned the Distinguished Flying Cross prior to returning home from Europe and building the home in 1947.
Nestled in the shade of three massive old trees on the property, this large home has served for decades as a perfect venue for gathering family with longstanding, and brand new, friends. Its one level design makes it inviting for even the very young and seniors. Combined with the potential to provide your boarding student with the ability to experience the day student lifestyle on their campus for a short period, Rum Runner House offers your entire family memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.
My family stayed at the Rum Runner House in Andover for a long weekend in November. The house was recently renovated and everything is in great shape. We’re a large group at those times when we can all get together. The game room is terrific! We had a family singles ping pong tournament that almost everyone took part in. It was interesting to see the group so enthusiastically respond to it. The kitchen had plenty of room to prepare the big meal. We spread out between the dining room and the kitchen table to eat. Settling in after dessert, the younger crowd headed for the game console in the game room, while others looking for a quieter experience settled in the large living room for TV and reading. Those waiting for their turn on the game controllers, when not following along with the games, were either playing doubles ping pong or surfing the web. A couple of the guys were fine with the cold weather and went out to toss a football in the side yard. We used all of the bedrooms. I was fast and scored the nice corner room with the massive bed. My second choice, the room with the fireplace, is also really nice. Everyone was happy with their beds. Also, the two large full bathrooms made it easy to take care of business. In terms of problems, the no smoking rule resulted in a few of us having to sit on the patio to have our butts. It’s right outside the game room, so it was handy, but I prefer enjoying my smoke in the warm indoors. To be fair, others were fine with that. The house is easy to get to, with the town and plenty of stores and restaurants less than two miles in either direction. Overall, this is a great place for a family to stay.
Our family rented this house for our stay in the Boston area during the Marathon. We thoroughly enjoyed the home and all the amenities it had to offer. It was very clean and well maintained with a well supplied kitchen and ample linens and a spacious living area and game room for our family of eight.
The owners were very gracious and accommodating, and made us feel right at home with fresh cut flowers and items in the refrigerator for our family upon arrival.
We found the area of Andover to be lovely and the people to be very friendly and sincere. It is just far enough away from Boston to be a perfect location to relax, and get away from the big city, but close enough to be able to take in all that Boston has to offer.
It was a lovely home and we wholeheartedly recommend this home without reservations.
Working in a political campaign, we used the house as our base, being close to NH and all MA.
House is very comfortable, completely equipped with everything you need and more!
Steve, the owner was really nice and helpful.
Definitely recommend staying here.
We loved staying in this very warm and inviting home in Andover. Steve was a wonderful host, and the location was very centrically located to the Main Street in Andover, and about 35 mins into Boston proper. Would highly recommend staying here.
This house is a very clean, well kept and spacious home that was ideal for my family. It is beautifully furnished and was stocked with everything we needed to live comfortably. It is as another reviewer wrote, "A home away from home."
Andover is a pretty New England suburban town. It was a great base for us to visit Boston.
Steve was a gracious host. He stocked the kitchen with milk, juice and a fruit tart to welcome us. The house was great for my kids with xbox, ping pong table, basketball hoop and games. The kitchen is set up with everything you could want.
Steve was responsive and professional throughout the reservation process and during our stay. Steve was flexible in accommodating our changing circumstances.
I look forward to staying here again.
We were in-between houses and needed a place for our family of five to stay for two weeks. The Rum Runner house was the PERFECT place for us...close to town, close to school...fully furnished house...super easy to work with Steve! It made what could have been a stressful two weeks a rather pleasant two weeks! Almost felt like we were on vacation!
Lovely home with very gracious host - my friends and I arrived for our reunion, and Steve had stocked the kitchen with milk and even a coffee cake! Nice outdoor space for grilling in the backyard, and extremely convenient to Phillips Academy. (You will want a car, though)
I look forward to staying here again!
