Why Richard J. Hausner Interests chose Hudson Valley

The beauty of the valley speaks for itself. Located 100 miles north of NYC, Columbia County is a slowed pace country wonder with surprising upsides: tremendous historic significance, stimulating cultural events, quality restaurants, quaint shopping, serious antiquing, abundant outdoor activities and sunsets matched by no other.

What makes this chalet unique

It's all about the view! The moment you step onto the ridge you will be taken away by the mountains and the mighty Hudson River. This multi-county area is steeped in historic properties and is the heart and soul of the Hudson River School of Painting. Artists Thomas Cole and Fredric Church built their estates a stone's throw up the river. Roosevelts, Vanderbilts and Astors have long called this valley their home.

Although there are ample gently rolling trails, hiiking around the entire 23 acres can be challenging as the steep slopes of the river and abutting kill jet up to a high ridge. This was once a Native American campground overlooking these bodies of water. Arrowheads and artifacts have been found here for years. The beauty is not lost on the abundant wildlife that feeds here. Wild turkeys, deer, ducks, geese and bald eagles are common visitors. It's a wonderful place to explore.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This place is amazing! We spent the morning at the farmers market and then went back to the house and made a big brunch! We hiked around the property and then took a swim... Now we're going to barbeque and eat by the pool. Tomorrow were going apple picking :-) not a bad weekend!

Late Winter Anniversary Getaway March 2017

  • 5 of 5

Glenn and I can't express the disappointment we felt HAVING TO LEAVE this GLORIOUS, BEAUTIFUL, COMFORTABLE, ROMANTIC little house. The Cottage gave us a well deserved break from life while experiencing every luxury we could have asked for in the dead of winter. (Wind chills were minus 5° or so on sunny Saturday afternoon). Due to a work commitment, we didn't get there until midnight on Friday night. But, just as the caretaker Muriel had told us, the key was accessible.  It turned out to be a windy, cold, snowless winter weekend, so we chose to spend almost all our time in the indoor heated pool and Jacuzzi. On our anniversary we cooked together in the perfectly spaced professional kitchen and ate a lovely dinner by the fireplace while watching the shooting stars over the Hudson River. I cannot thank the owners and caretaker enough for answering promptly all the preparation

questions we had (which were all well addressed in the Welcome notebook found right on the kitchen counter next to a Cottage at Sunset basket with personalized bottle of sparkling wine and some treats). This HomeAway property would have gotten a 6 star review had the dumbwaiter been working.  My husband, dog and I would not only recommend this home to friends, but we also will be booking another stay at the Cottage at Sunset. We'll be seeing you next winter and thanks again for the most fantastic HomeAway Getaway.

Great place with views and privacy

  • 5 of 5

Great place with good views. Sledding in the back was lot of fun, pool was small but still good, and decent hikes around the area. Cottage is still new and very clean.

Great place

  • 5 of 5

Wife, daughter and dog had a great relaxing weekend at this place. Looking to get away from the city for a few days and stayed here, didn't see another person the entire 4 days we were there, just what we were looking for.

What a beautiful place to celebrate our 45th Anniversary!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a quiet, romantic place to celebrate our 45th Wedding Anniversary. This is a great place to do that. The home is beautiful, the view is outstanding. We stayed for five nights, from 9/28 to 10/4. Everything was clean and ready for our visit. It is obvious that the staff takes pride in maintaining this one-of-a-kind property. ( Thank you for that. ) We will definitely be back. It is a great place to use as a home base to tour the area during the day and then relax at night.

Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week's stay at the Cottage on Sunset and already I want to go back. This cottage is clean and lovely with spectacular views of the Hudson River. Secluded, but not isolated, the home is in a great location for exploring the Hudson Valley. Each morning we had wild turkeys, ground hogs, squirrels, and bald eagles visit. While on the property we never saw another person - it was so nice and private - but help was available via email and texting. I had a couple of questions and they were answered within minutes of asking them. The owners left snacks and a bottle of sparkling wine (which was yummy) for us upon arrival. Such a nice welcome.

The bed was very comfortable, the shower huge with plenty of hot water, a marvelous selection of books on the area, walking sticks, and there's even a snow sled which I would have been all over if it had been later in the year - that back lawn is just made for sledding. And did I mention the views? Actually, I can't think of anything wrong with the place! Oh - one teeny tiny thing - would have loved a coffee scoop but maybe we just didn't find it in that exceptionally well furnished kitchen. We chose to eat breakfast at the cottage and dinner out each night (to me it's not vacation if I have to cook), but the kitchen has what you need if you do want to make your own meals and it's all top of the line.

We did use the hot tub a couple times and we loved sitting at the table in the pool room having our coffee each morning. The multiple doors let in so much light and did I mention the views? LOL I never got tired of watching the river traffic (everything from tiny fishing boats to freighters and barges). There is a train track at the foot of the hill, but you can't see it very well and, unless you're outside, you won't hear it.

From the cottage we went to West Point, Hyde Park, Olana, the Catskills, Poughkeepsie (Walkway Over the Hudson), took a river cruise, and hiked in the Mills-Norrie State Park. There was a lot more to do, but we ran out of time. We'll be coming back and dreaming of the day we do.
