Lutsen Lakehouse - The ideal choice for a premier, private North Shore haven of rest. Available year-round.
NOTE: BEFORE SENDING US AN INQUIRY, PLEASE READ THE FIRST 5 NUMBERED PARAGRAPHS BELOW.
"The heavens declare the glory of God and the earth shows His handiwork." Reserve your stay at Lutsen Lakehouse and you will experience this passage from the Book of Psalms as Lake Superior's thundering waves crash against the ledgerock shoreline, northern lights dance across the sky, the call of a loon ricochets over the water, and a full moon rises over the big lake they call Gitchigummi. And that's just the view outside.
Inside you will appreciate the comforts of a beautiful, professionally cleaned home: sleep soundly in a first-floor master suite with jetted bath, unwind by a soothing fire in the massive wood-burning fieldstone fireplace, relax in the cedar sauna, and savor a meal in the fully equipped kitchen complete with Sub-Zero fridge and Weber grill.
Enjoy all this and be just a few minutes from Lutsen Ski Resort, Superior Hiking Trail, Superior National Golf Course, and North Shore cross-country ski trails.

4. PAYMENT: Once you reserve your dates, we will email you a first invoice for half the total rent, along with a short rental agreement to sign. A couple weeks before your rental dates, we will email you a second invoice for the balance payment. Payments are made with personal check. Once you are paid in full, we will email you a home information document that includes all the details on using the home (directions, key code, wifi password, things to bring, kitchen items, etc.).
5. CARE: The home is professionally cleaned by a couple who live just down the street and are available to help if a problem arises during your stay. Out of respect to our home and friendly neighbors, parties, excessive alcohol consumption, and loud noise are prohibited.
HISTORY: The home was built in 1994, has been owned by our family since 1999, and is available for respectful renters seeking a quiet, North Shore retreat. You will find pictures, poems, and other items around the house that represent our family and Christian faith.
LOCATION: Lutsen Lakehouse is conveniently located about one mile east of "downtown" Lutsen and about two miles east of Lutsen Ski Resort. Grand Marais is located 17 miles east of the house and Tofte 10 miles west. Duluth, MN is 90 miles down the shore to the west. The distance from Minneapolis to Lutsen Lakehouse is 248 miles (4 hour drive).
PRIVACY: The home has lots of privacy on 200' of Lake Superior coastline. There is no home on the neighboring property to the west and plenty of distance and trees from a home on the neighboring property to the east. There is also ample buffer (~500') between the home and North Shore 61 with a service road (Pedersen Lane) and long driveway.
VIEW/LAKESHORE: The home is designed around the dramatic southerly view of Lake Superior. All bedrooms have wonderful views of the lake. You’ll enjoy watching and hearing the waves crash on shore, seeing the moon rise over Lake Superior, and glimpsing the occasional ore boat glide along the horizon. The home sits very close to Lake Superior (about 75 feet away) and has easy access to water's edge. The ledgerock shoreline is perfect for walking, campfires, or just sitting and enjoying the view.
BEDROOMS and BATHROOMS: The house has three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms and a good-sized loft with digital keyboard. The master bedroom on the main level has a queen-sized bed. The attached master bath has a large shower and separate bath tub with jets. The two upstairs bedrooms each have two twin beds. There is a half bathroom upstairs and a full bathroom with large cedar sauna on the main level.
LIVING ROOM, DINING ROOM, KITCHEN: All three rooms are open and inter-connected. The LIVING ROOM extends out from the center of the home with panoramic views of the shore. A massive wood-burning fieldstone fireplace sits opposite the windows (complimentary split firewood is available for guests). The DINING ROOM has a large, round wood table perfect for family times together. The KITCHEN is fully equipped with Sub-Zero fridge, gas and electric stove, two ovens, toaster, coffee maker, griddle, waffle iron, popcorn popper, microwave, full cookware (stainless steel), dishware, and silverware, dishwasher, and a large island with two stools.
DECKS: A deck extends along the lakeside (south side) and the west side of the house, with gliders, deck chairs, and a large table for relaxing and taking in the view. The covered west side deck off the dining room and kitchen is where the Weber grill is located. There is also a large deck upstairs off the west bedroom.
AUDIO/VISUAL: There is a 32' flat screen television (with 2 HDMI inputs) in the living room with satellite TV (Direct TV) and a DVD player. The sound system with Bose speakers plays CDs, FM/AM radio, and has a AUX port to plug in your portable audio device (you'll need to bring your own 1/8' male-to-male cable).
INTERNET: Free high-speed WiFi is available in the home.
PETS: Due to guests with allergies, we do not allow pets.
WASHER/DRIER: We store house supplies and our personal items in the laundry room, so while the home does have a washer/drier, it is not available to guests. A laundromat is available one mile west in Lutsen. For extended stays, clean linens and towels can be arranged with our cleaning staff.
WILDLIFE: Watch for white-tailed deer in the yard, bald eagles overhead, and all kinds of waterfowl on Lake Superior. If you're a little more fortunate, you may see a timber wolf.
Dad and Mom started our family's love affair with the North Shore when they took their honeymoon up to Lake Superior and the Gunflint Trail way back in 1954.
In the 1990's, we started taking regular trips up the North Shore, staying in various rental homes from Lutsen to Grand Marais. And then in 1999, we finally found a beautiful home on Lake Superior to call our own just down the road from Lutsen. We call it Lutsen Lakehouse. The house has been and continues to be a special home away from home for us.
Dad and Mom have four children and seven grandchildren ... sixteen in all in the family. All of us love to head up to the cabin (usually not at the same time!) to hike and ski and take canoe trips into the Boundary Waters. Most of all though, we love sitting by a roaring fire and staring out at the many moods of Lake Superior.
We enjoy sharing Lutsen Lakehouse with others who appreciate and respect the home and the North Shore as we do. I, the youngest, have been given the task of coordinating rentals and would look forward to talking with you about staying at our home. We have many fond memories from our times there and hope you can visit and make some too!

David purchased this house in 1999
Spectacular lake views! The house is very well equipped and clean. David is a very attentive and helpful host . Overall highly recommended!
My mom and I had such an amazing time during our relaxing week in July. The house is absolutely gorgeous with a breathtaking view of the lake. The huge deck is perfect for relaxing and listening to the waves crash on the rocks. The house is very private (didn't see a soul the entire time) and has everything you could possibly need for cooking, etc. We ate dinner out only one night (the Angry Trout in nearby Grand Marais is spectacular!!!) and otherwise enjoyed cooking and eating on the deck. Bedrooms are wonderful and roomy. Easy drive from the Minneapolis airport with a fun stop at the lighthouse. We can't wait to return next summer!!!
My daughter and I spent 4 nights in Lutsen Lakehouse, and had a wonderful time relaxing. The cabin is beautiful, fully equipped with everything one could possibly need. Located right on Lake Superior, the crashing waves on the ledge rocks made us want to stay forever. Being from the Midwest with high temperatures and humidity in July and August, this was a most welcome retreat for us. It would also be great to be there in the spring and fall months , and I'm sure winter for the hearty souls who would like to ski, skate, ice fish, or just enjoy the snow. Hopefully, we can stay there again sometime in future.
What a perfect get away for all 3 couples! Everyone wished we could have stayed longer. It was a beautiful cabin in a beautiful location. It clean, cozy and luxurious all wrapped up in a quiet location. The first night was so peaceful as we watched the stars pop out during our bonfire. There was was much use of the decks... whether to read or just gaze at nature. There was alone space and yet we had community space. It was perfect. We recommend this to anyone wanting that special time away. You will not be disappointed.
From the moment we saw the cabin in the moon light on Friday night - til Monday when we sadly had to leave, all of us felt peaceful and rested. The place was spotless, bright during the day and cozy warm at night. The first night the Lake was restless and noisy then settled down to a tranquil lapping on the shore and deep blue color. We even saw a bald eagle resting for a few minutes. I appreciated the owner calling on Saturday morning to check up on us to make sure we arrived safely - very thoughtful.
I enjoyed reading the owners book about Ben, his wonderful Labrador and will be ordering a copy from your website this weekend since I didn't get to finish it. ,I also enjoyed seeing all of the wonderful family pictures - it gave the house a warmth that most places don't have - and made us feel we were in a loving home as opposed to a cold rental.
It was way beyond our expectations and hope to find a time to stay again in the near future.
People wondered why I was so calm and happy at work this week - It was the beauty of nature and the tranquility of the lake that lets a soul rest in such a wonderful atmosphere
Unsurpassed location. Wonderful lake views and household amenities. Clean and comfy indoor and outdoor furnishings. Clean and nicely-appointed bathrooms and kitchen. Extensive decks with plenty of seating. Firepit on the rocks. Even had the Lake Superior hiking guide we forgot to pack! The well-maintained yard, flexible check-out and owner attention to detail went above and beyond a typical rental. Our group of adults and teens were all satisfied. What more can you ask for?
