CASA VILLA SERRA
(What are our famous guests saying? Contact us for our online guestbook address.)
Location, location, location. Plus sweeping 180 degree views over Lisbon's colorful city center and the Tejo River!
Would you prefer a house to an apartment? Worried about the raucous 3am Chiado/Bairro Alto nightlife? Want to be within walking distance to the main sights but far from hotels and the tourist crush?
Perched above the Praca dos Restauradores, this beautifully restored, historically-protected 19th century terraced home is exactly where you want to be . . . an 8 minute walk from the Rossio, Lisbon's main plaza.
(Our delightfully quiet, hidden lane consists of some of the very few private homes to be found in central Lisbon. The charming, famous neighbors are an added bonus.)
All your favourite sites are nearby: the Baixa and Bairro Alto, Lisbon's open-air 'restaurant row,' the Chiado shopping district, plus two of the best in-city 'kid parks' in Lisbon. We provide customised walking maps to help you explore the city at your leisure.
Relax on the rooftop garden terrace with a glass of Vinho Verde, enjoy cocktails while you gaze across the city...
A 10 minute walk takes you down to the Rossio train station, where you catch a ride to Sintra, Fatima, or the medieval walled-city of Obidos. Or grab our beach towels and cooler and head for the beach. Not beach weather? Visit the Gulbenkian Museum, Belem, Oceanarium, Zoo...

In June 2001, we kissed Seattle good-bye and moved to our family's ancestral Portugal to work with Habitat for Humanity/Portugal. Soon afterward, in an attempt to protect ourselves from the crashing dollar, we diversified into Euro-zone real estate... and we couldn't be more pleased with the result: sharing our love of the Portuguese people and culture with guests from around the world has been a delight. We now have five historically-protected homes in our little medieval neighborhood... right in the middle of town, yet oh-so-quiet and charming! (Just 3 - 8 minutes from Lisbon's main plaza, the Rossio.) Walk everywhere from here; or stay home and relax on your sunny terrace. Many thanks to all our guests for the support and encouragement. We look forward to seeing you again someday soon. Until then, Godspeed.
Austin, Jordan & Deb Kleber purchased this house in 2009
Our Lisbon homes are located in an historic area, protected by the Portuguese government because of its unique value; the exteriors look just as they did in the 19th century, with even the paint color regulated to ensure authenticity. Most of the buildings in our Historic Preservation neighborhood were built in the 1500-1800s and all our properties retain their old-world flavor. Nowhere in this neighborhood will you find McVillas with plate-glass windows... instead, prepare to step back in time.
Casa Villa Serra is stunning: full of glorious sunlight, with the city of Lisbon spread out at your feet. The house is private, close to the center of Lisbon, but in a neighbourhood so quiet, you can almost Forget you're in the city at all. It's the best of both worlds!
Dear Deb and Jordan -
I had seen your website briefly but had not studied it. Susan was in charge and I was just marching to her drummer.
So I am astounded at my great good fortune and blessing to have fallen into the hands and homes you and Jordan so kindly and perfectly provide. Your attention and care and suggestions were constant (when asked) and the two houses wee so beautifully furnished and equipped. I'm left no stone unturned in our happiness.
We did everything we wanted to do - with ease and pleasure. I strongly recommend the Maritime Museum and the Puppet Museum. Both astounding.
I'm also in love with your son (his quiet cheery good mornings) and your darling daughter and lovely smiling granddaughter and of course your bounding dog!
So much love and gratitude for providing so perfectly for all of us.
The apartment was just what we were looking for. Well located, lovely views. We immediately felt at home. Austin was very helpful and her arrival orientation tour made a big difference. Exploring the seven hills of Lisbon on foot provides great exercise and fun stops at the many cafes. A great experience.
We had a great stay in this house but spent most of our time on the porch overlooking parts of Lisbon. Everything was great and clearly Austin has been very thoughtful with the details. She was very responsive and helpful; one of the best managers we've ever dealt with. My wife wants to come back to Lisbon, but I think it's the house that appeals to her as much as the town.
The neighborhood is very close to Libertad and Rossio, and about a 15 minute walk to the water. There's a million restaurants in walking distance. There are a couple of small grocery stores about 2 minutes away, so that was convenient.
The only negative is the house is on top of a hill, but we took the tram most of the time (and a $5 taxi the rest of the time). The tram was very fun, actually. We ended up searching out the others in Lisbon.
My husband and I spent 5 nights at Casa Villa Serra with our three sons (ages 11, 9, and 6). The apartment really exceeded my expectations. The location is perfect - on a unique, quiet, "village" lane right in the middle of the city. It was a short walk down to the Rossio square and the Baixa district and only a slightly longer walk up to the Bairro Alto/Chiado neighborhoods. The view from the kitchen and rooftop terrace is spectacular. You can see all the way to the river.
Everything in the apartment was clean and in perfect working order. There was a nice laundry room with a washer and dryer. The kitchen was very well-stocked with dishes, utensils, appliances, and Austin had left us some fresh fruit, wine, and cheese when we checked in.
Austin was very helpful and gave us a tour of the neighborhood when we arrived and helped us get our bearings. She also arranged a fabulous "Fado" evening for us, which I would highly recommend.
We were very comfortable and I would have been happy to stay several more weeks. Highly recommended!
Our family of four with a 3 yr old and 8 month old stayed here in early October and had a wonderful stay. It's in a great location and has fabulous views. The quality of the towels, bedding and pillows was great and made it feel like I was staying at the Four Seasons but with a lot more room and a much better price. Austin was waiting for us when we arrived and gave us a quick walking tour of the neighborhood and pointed out good restaurants and grocery stores in the area. The provided lots of kids stuff- high chair, potable crib, baby bathtub, toys, books, beach towels, baby gates, etc at no additional cost.
I would stay here again in a heartbeat and Austin was extremely helpful and we had no complaints or problems with our stay. It's easy to get to the Metro stations and plenty of restaurants and you definitely get a better feel living like the locals that you wouldn't get staying in a hotel.
My family (husband, wife, and three boys) have rented houses/flats via VRBO in Rome, Mallorca, Mexico and the U.S., but this place is the best place we've ever stayed in. Without a doubt, this is due to the hospitality shown by Jordan immediately upon arrival. His 60-90 minute tour of the area, complete with multiple restaurant recommendations, Metro advice, favorite local characters, great stories -- all that was key to kicking off our 4 day stay in Lisbon on the highest of notes. Deb and Jordan -- Americans who have lived in Portugal for more than 10 years and who speak fluent Portuguese -- have thought of everything: the cheese, bread and wine waiting for you upon arrival; the fantastic towels; the fully outfitted kitchen; the laptop and cell phone...on and on, they've clearly thought through all the "little things" that a guest would appreciate and then they've made it available. We also did a cooking class arranged through them, with their friend and famous local chef celebrity, Diogo. First shopping at the amazing grocery store, then cooking in our kitchen, and finally consuming the amazing creations out on the terrace of the house in the sunshine...it simply does not get any better than that! I highly, HIGHLY recommend this apartment.
Parks, beaches, Torre de Belem with its lovely waterfront park and impressive Mosteiro de Jeronimos, Lisbon's spectacular aquarium--the world's 2nd largest--at the 1998 World Expo site (Parque das Nacoes), 30-minute train ride to Sintra, 2-hour train to Obidos, Please don't hesitate to ask us for itinerary suggestions, CAR, Neither necessary nor recommended, Within Lisbon, the taxis, trams, buses and metro are accessible, inexpensive and easy to use, Regional trains take you to outlying towns, beaches and picturesque fishing villages, (Driving is not a relaxing option, Portugal has the highest roadway accident rate in Europe, )
