Great location! Comfortable apartment.

  • 5 of 5

This is a modern, Ikea-furnished, one-bedroom basement apartment in an old building in Islington. It's main plus is, of course, location. A half block to the west is Caledonian Road, which has 4 frequent buses which branch out to the south to a variety of useful destinations (including Angel, Kings Cross, British Museum, and Euston Station), an Overground stop, several grocery stores which are open til 11pm, chemists, dry cleaners, post office, small family owned ethnic restaurants and shops.

A half block to the east is a residential area: a corner with a church, a library, a park, and a row of beautiful town-houses (which have been turned into flats).

If you like city walking, you can get to the Angel station or Kings Cross from here in 1.0 miles by foot. There is also a wonderful city hike of the "Angel" (east) side of the apartment - look for item #9 which is a block from the apartment. You can start from #9 and do a loop: http://www.londongardenstrust.org/guides/map.php?tour=Islington.

This apartment also has some non-"Location-based" plusses:

-- it is surprisingly quiet - stand in front of the building and you can hear the busses, the motorbikes, the people. Go into the apartment and close the wooden door to the bedroom (which is in back) and there are only muffled sounds. Part of the reason is that Brightman is a cul-de-sac: only pedestrians can get to Caledonian from in front of the flat.

-- in a London heat wave, it is really cool in the apartment. We had 90 degree F in September 2016 and the apt was cool.

-- Clive reads his email and responds. (there were a variety of hickups that required his advice to handle.)

-- the backyard is very pleasant.

Fabulous Location!

  • 5 of 5

As a family of 4 there was plenty of space in this accommodation. The location is close to grocery stores, restaurants and only a 15 minute walk to the London Underground. All of the information in the owners description of the property is bang on. The outdoor space in the back garden was a nice treat as we were missing our yard back at home. I did not realize that there was not a dishwasher, but it was not a concern as the dishes were clean (I wish I could have said the same for our accommodations in Dublin, Ireland). The neighborhood is charming with a lovely church just up the street. We enjoyed seeing a fox in the evenings that lives in the church yard. My only issue was the fee required for arrival after 7:00pm. This was our only accommodation that had this late fee on our trip expanding over 4 weeks (consisting of 6 VBRO rentals). It is noted in the description of the property but I had not realized it was so early. That said, the owner was so welcoming! Too bad airline companies do not compensate travellers for delayed flights. Traffic from the airport is crazy in London. The owners advice to take a pre-arranged taxi was much appreciated as the journey from Gatwick Airport is approximately 1 1 /2 hours, and that is before rush hour. The owner was informative and has a guest book with information during your stay. Thank you for making our stay in London so accessible, great location!

Questionable area.

  • 2 of 5

We were disappointed with the place for a number of reason. Did not like the area it was located in. While indeed it was very accessible(10 min walk to the tube) it is really not a very attractive neighborhood , and still in the process of gentrification. It does not help the impression if someone urinates right in your doorstep. I have to say that we did feel safe there.

While the apartment itself was clean and cozy, the bathroom was in need of scrubbing and painting - a bit of mold and rot and pealed paint here and there. Also, the dishes were not cleaned well- lipstick on the glasses, tea stains.

Did not use the patio- it was unkept and not inviting, the chairs were dirty. It did provide for nice light though.

We picked the place based on reviews and description- price was in line with many other places. I wish that we did a better homework. It was our first visit to London and I would rather pay more to have more enjoyable vocation.

Owner's Response: Hello, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I am surprised to hear of your complaints, if I were aware of your dissatisfaction I would have done everything in my power to ensure your comfort. I have a professional gardener that visits the apartment regularly to maintain the garden (even maintaining a vegtable patch). The area I can assure you is also very safe, I grew up on the neighbouring street and currently still live locally myself. We use the services of a professional external cleaning and linen company who are extremely proficient, if I had been informed of any substandard level of service during your stay I would have done everything in my power to rectify this. Please contact me directly if you would like to discuss this further. Once again, my sincere apologies that you did not enjoy the apartment as much as we would have hoped. Best wishes, Clive

APPARTEMENT TRES SYMPA ET BIEN SITUE

  • 5 of 5

Bye

The apartment is very lovely decorated and furnish

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is very lovely decorated and furnished and very very clean. I was travelling to London with my family who flew in on a long-haul flight from Malaysia and they slept so soundly on their first night here!

The space is large enough for four people and would be suitable for people wanting to stay in London for a few nights.

The apartment is located close to Upper St, where it's bustling with restaurants, pubs and quirky little shops. That being said, the apartment is far enough from Upper St that you won't notice the activities of the busy street.

All in all, my family thoroughly enjoyed their stay at the apartment and the host, Clive is very organised and made sure that we made the most of our stay in London.

Located in Zone 1, N1 (North 1 postal code), the apartment is the ideal location if you plan to seek out the best London has to offer across its boroughs. It's in the northern part of central (as London is so big even the center is divided into boroughs), which gives the benefit of easily being able to reach the eastern attractions (15 min bus to Brick Lane, Shoreditch, Liverpool Street area) as well as the western attractions (10 min bus to Camden, Oxford Street, Soho, Westminster, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and a short 5 min bus ride to Kings Cross) from the apartment.

This also means that you can walk fairly easily to the centre.

The apartment is in Barnsbury, Islington, which is one of London's most beautiful and desirable boroughs. There are shops 30 seconds from the apartment where you can buy food to cook in the apartment as well as many bars and restaurants either along the Caledonian Road (seconds away) or on the buzzing Upper Street.
