About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Den, Sleeps 6

Perfectly designed by a local architect, south of Abiquiu this large, airy pueblo style home is filled with desert light, and beautiful vistas from its many windows. Using southwestern elements and handcrafted furnishings the high ceilinged living room has a kiva fireplace, cozy down filled white sofas in an open floor plan with a dining area that seats 10. The gourmet kitchen boasts a Viking Range, Asko DW, concrete counters, and a complete pantry. A few steps up from the living room by mesquite stairs is a quiet den complete with TV and a day bed that sleeps 2.

Two ample bedrooms (king and queen beds) have tiled ensuite baths. A large eastern portale facing the mountains is complete with outdoor fireplace. The house sits snugly on 30 + acres and borders the State Land with trails down to the Chama River.

There is a separate bathhouse with sauna and serene resting room. Wonderfully landscaped with desert flowers, the home is a peaceful and beautiful retreat.

Indian ruins are within walking distance. Do not forget to hike along the ancient arroyo to the Chama River.

Wildlife can be seen from the huge windows, which lend this home passive solar heat. Built on several levels this architectural home has beautiful fenestration which encompasses views from every angle.

Close by are the old Abiquiu pueblo, the non-excavated ruins of Poshuouinge, plus San Juan, Santa Clara and San Ildelfonso Pueblos.

Not to be missed are Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keeffe had her studio, Christ in the Desert Monastery, Abiquiu Lake, the Piedra Lumbre basin.

Colorful mesas give way to high mountains with Alpine meadows.

From late March through November the Georgia O'Keeffe house in Abiquiu is open for guided tours. Santa Fe and Taos are nearby for day trips. So are Chaco Canyon, Chama, Pagosa Springs, CO, Los Alamos and the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs.

You might want to come out when the cottonwood trees are yellow and orange during the annual Abiquiu Studio Tour (Columbus Day weekend) in October, or one week later for the El Rito Studio Tour.

All seasons in Northern New Mexico are sensational.

Additional Information: We have a free internet phone which is connected to wifi. Flat screen tv and dvd player with plenty of good films and books. All pets are welcome in our home. We do charge $ 10/day for for extra cleaning.

About Lilyan Sievernich

We are independent feature film producers and have traveled the world making movies with the likes of Wim Wenders, John Huston, John Schlesinger. In our many travels we have never found a place as special as Northern New Mexico and we have fun sharing it with many visitors from around the world. It is especially exciting to painters and photographers. It has such an incredible light no wonder Hollywood is coming to Northern New Mexico in the last few years!

Lilyan Sievernich purchased this house in 2000

Why Lilyan Sievernich chose New Mexico

We bought our piece of paradise from our old friend and neighbor in 1998 and she convinced us to build a house with a local architect and builder. 'a casita' The process was wonderful if at times perplexing because the local artisans never quite understood what we were talking about! We ended up with a wonderfully eclectic and delightful mix of styles of the southwest. A house filled with light and spirit!

What makes this house unique

This property borders thousands of acres of state land and though it is rural and wonderful it is not remote. Our wonderful local architect Mike carefully picked out the best views from the window and angled the house perfectly to the sun. We had so much fun building it, picking the tiles and fixtures and inviting the local craftsmen to make our furniture and doors and plaster the walls and make our home unique, filled with light and yet cozy.

Amazing Place

  • 5 of 5

How can a person describe something as special as this place is without writing a book. I won't do that but I will say that it is simply incredible! Beautiful design. Incredible views in all directions. Wonderfully appointed with comfortable accommodations for night and day. Pictures can't do this place justice nor can words. It has to be experienced. Hopefully we'll be allowed to come back. We were able to stay for 7 nights this time and wished it would have been double that when it was time to leave.

Owner's Response: Yes we often think that when we are in the stress of our big noisy city and our daily lives, why aren't we on the mesa breathing in that piñon scented air, and gazing off into the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains? When we are finally there we love to read on the soft down filled couches (with naps) take zen like saunas at sunset (with a nap after) , maybe drink a glass of wine on the eastern portale and off to our comfy beds. It is certainly heavenly in our high mesa home--- because we have spent years perfecting it and perfecting the art of relaxing there!

So very lovely!!!

  • 5 of 5

There are so many wonderful reviews of this fabulous home and for good reason! There is an amazing peaceful and positive vibe around this home and land. Lilyan is a delight to work with. Her positive energy and care are abundantly felt and her art is beautiful. The house is immaculately clean and the beds are great. This is an outstanding place!!

Owner's Response: These were exceptional guests as well. We so appreciate it when guests appreciate all the work we have lovingly and happily put into our home. :) Our artwork is from friends and local artists---some known and some not so known and some is even from guests who have stayed in the house. we love the art work but also love our beautifully plastered walls so some of the work just leans oh so carefully against the walls. and we try to not to clutter (which is a challenge with all the wonderful things to be bought in Santa Fe) the house so that the beautiful high desert light shines on the very artful artwork.

Majestic. Comfortable. Relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

This was my family's second stay at Lilyan's cozy home; both stays were quite lovely and relaxing. Lilyan is ultra accommodating (even from afar). The setting is absolutely majestic, as is the home. The radiant in-floor heat, fireplace, sauna, and separate gathering areas and bedrooms with comfortable, unpretentious seating help create a quiet, reflective spaces in which you easily - almost unknowingly - begin to unwind and decompress from stresses of the day to day.

The house has everything you need and nothing you don't (save for your own food and drink of choice). I would live here full time if Lilyan would be willing to part with it. ;)

Owner's Response: No sorry we never want to give this up! I am thinking of even having my ashes thrown at the Black Mesa---which sits so beautifully on our horizon . We have seen spectacular sunrises and sunsets and moon rises huge over the Santo des Christo Mountains. All from the comfort of David's hand hewn chairs at the long table he made to go with it. We love waking up in the morning in any weather and enjoy every view from our carefully placed windows. Its stunning to tell you the God's honest truth.

Serene, lovely vistas

  • 5 of 5

Medanales Mesa Retreat is a lovely house to enjoy in the midst of winter, with its warm floors, kiva fireplace, plentiful wood, sauna, gorgeous views from every door and window, sunny skies and little rain or snow. We stayed 4 weeks and would have remained, if possible for several more months to see the blossoming of the plantings. There were bushes of lavender all around the house, honeysuckle and trumpet vines and we could only imagine the scent when in bloom. We only had one night of snow, and it was gone by noon the next day. On many days we could open the windows to allow for dry, fresh air. The dirt road was never a problem, even with a small car. The layout is excellent with its two separate wings, allowing for privacy for more than one couple. An unfortunate fall found competent medical care at the Espanola Presbyterian Hospital Emergency Room. The house is well stocked with an abundance of supplies, spices, teas and coffees, herbs, even roasted New Mexican chilis (caution: hot) in the freezer. The owners are attentive. There is much to do and see in the northern part of NM and we look forward to returning.

Owner's Response: We try in every way to make your visit a perfect one in our often imperfect world! And these guests were also perfect because often the trials of being in the desert in the cold can be a challenge---but they knew and appreciated that the winter beauty is really worth it. Clear vistas which stretch forever, snow on the mountains and warm sun in the afternoons on the protected portals makes our New Mexican winter a delight . A sauna at the end of the day a hearty blast of cold air and then to sit in front of the piñon fire with a glass of wine increases winters pleasures. But they were right that in the spring the lavender blooms and fills our home with that calming fragrance and the hummingbirds come to drink at the trumpet vines, and the mesa comes alive with life. We purposely designed the house so your guests in the guests wings are close but not too close :) and the great room brings everyone together for a great meal. We try to make sure all the sundries you might need to make that meal are provided---and we have neighbors who are making wine, growing veggies, and providing fresh eggs for us in the summer. And then of course there is the magic of autumn. I hope this couple comes back to experience it all.

Enchanting!

  • 5 of 5

It is hard to express how beautiful the mesa is -- sunrises and sunsets are outstanding. The house is an architectural gem and is very well appointed. My wife, father-in-law (from The Netherlands) and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is truly an enchanting place!

Owner's Response: After we finished building our house in 2000 we thought eventually we would get tired of going there and tired of the desert view---but each visit brings us a new marvel: a huge full moon rising over the Black Mesa, a double rainbow (our last visit) after a monsoon rain, a golden sunset that illuminated the raindrops like diamonds on the grass ---our mesa just keeps on giving us yet another wonder. On the last visit we ate in a garden with our architect (who so carefully fenestrated our views) and he said even after living there more than 40 years he still thought New Mexico was very special. The beauty of the high desert with its huge sky filled with stars, the fragrant smell of sage, the absolute silence of our mesa home brings us such peace and such pleasure. Enchanting indeed!

Profound Beauty

  • 5 of 5

This house had a profound effect on me and my small dog when we first visited last October. The slow rhythm of the high desert captivated us and somehow made us both feel not only at peace, but directly part of the nature around us. In the mornings, my normally neurotic terrier would calmly stroll out into the landscape to nap in the sunlight. And in July, when I returned for another week with my husband and dog, the same gentle calmness overtook us all immediately. Perfectly placed in the land, the house is completely surrounded by dramatic beauty and stunning variety wherever one gazes. In the fall, almost all the desert colors remain but the cottonwood trees begin to glow in brilliant yellows along the edges of the Chama River to the south. On both visits, I sat seemingly forever looking out as the light changed on the dry grass, the bees worked in their mysterious patterns on the lavender beneath the giant picture windows, the jackrabbits dashed across the distance, and the clouds and sky shifted constantly on the mesas and mountains - almost as if some lighting director was playing backstage and experimenting with every possible color and light pattern he could imagine. All this beauty was on display while our day-to-day needs were met seamlessly. The beds are comfortable; the rooms are graciously sized and tastefully furnished; the baths are modern and luxurious, everything was spotlessly clean, and the kitchen fun to cook in. Being there, one feels total isolation and privacy, yet it is reassuring that there are friendly and helpful neighbors very close but out of view. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not mandatory but I found it makes the gravel road easier. Looking forward now to experiencing winter and spring on future visits.

Owner's Response: Yes we are in love with our beautiful landscapes and the care that our architect took to expose them with his clever fenestration. We love sitting on the east portal and watching the moon rise over the sangre des cristo mountains. We have taken care that the sauna and all the resting places in our home reflects and captures the peace and beauty of the high desert. Our guest knew from his last visit that October is spectacular in its golden beauty, now he saw summer with the monsoons and rainbows, but yet to see december in the snow and of course the spring when the earth wakens for yet another season of growth and desert blooms.
