Perfectly designed by a local architect, south of Abiquiu this large, airy pueblo style home is filled with desert light, and beautiful vistas from its many windows. Using southwestern elements and handcrafted furnishings the high ceilinged living room has a kiva fireplace, cozy down filled white sofas in an open floor plan with a dining area that seats 10. The gourmet kitchen boasts a Viking Range, Asko DW, concrete counters, and a complete pantry. A few steps up from the living room by mesquite stairs is a quiet den complete with TV and a day bed that sleeps 2.
Two ample bedrooms (king and queen beds) have tiled ensuite baths. A large eastern portale facing the mountains is complete with outdoor fireplace. The house sits snugly on 30 + acres and borders the State Land with trails down to the Chama River.
There is a separate bathhouse with sauna and serene resting room. Wonderfully landscaped with desert flowers, the home is a peaceful and beautiful retreat.
Indian ruins are within walking distance. Do not forget to hike along the ancient arroyo to the Chama River.
Wildlife can be seen from the huge windows, which lend this home passive solar heat. Built on several levels this architectural home has beautiful fenestration which encompasses views from every angle.
Close by are the old Abiquiu pueblo, the non-excavated ruins of Poshuouinge, plus San Juan, Santa Clara and San Ildelfonso Pueblos.
Not to be missed are Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keeffe had her studio, Christ in the Desert Monastery, Abiquiu Lake, the Piedra Lumbre basin.
Colorful mesas give way to high mountains with Alpine meadows.
From late March through November the Georgia O'Keeffe house in Abiquiu is open for guided tours. Santa Fe and Taos are nearby for day trips. So are Chaco Canyon, Chama, Pagosa Springs, CO, Los Alamos and the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs.
You might want to come out when the cottonwood trees are yellow and orange during the annual Abiquiu Studio Tour (Columbus Day weekend) in October, or one week later for the El Rito Studio Tour.

Lilyan Sievernich purchased this house in 2000
We bought our piece of paradise from our old friend and neighbor in 1998 and she convinced us to build a house with a local architect and builder. 'a casita' The process was wonderful if at times perplexing because the local artisans never quite understood what we were talking about! We ended up with a wonderfully eclectic and delightful mix of styles of the southwest. A house filled with light and spirit!
This property borders thousands of acres of state land and though it is rural and wonderful it is not remote. Our wonderful local architect Mike carefully picked out the best views from the window and angled the house perfectly to the sun. We had so much fun building it, picking the tiles and fixtures and inviting the local craftsmen to make our furniture and doors and plaster the walls and make our home unique, filled with light and yet cozy.
This was my family's second stay at Lilyan's cozy home; both stays were quite lovely and relaxing. Lilyan is ultra accommodating (even from afar). The setting is absolutely majestic, as is the home. The radiant in-floor heat, fireplace, sauna, and separate gathering areas and bedrooms with comfortable, unpretentious seating help create a quiet, reflective spaces in which you easily - almost unknowingly - begin to unwind and decompress from stresses of the day to day.
The house has everything you need and nothing you don't (save for your own food and drink of choice). I would live here full time if Lilyan would be willing to part with it. ;)
Medanales Mesa Retreat is a lovely house to enjoy in the midst of winter, with its warm floors, kiva fireplace, plentiful wood, sauna, gorgeous views from every door and window, sunny skies and little rain or snow. We stayed 4 weeks and would have remained, if possible for several more months to see the blossoming of the plantings. There were bushes of lavender all around the house, honeysuckle and trumpet vines and we could only imagine the scent when in bloom. We only had one night of snow, and it was gone by noon the next day. On many days we could open the windows to allow for dry, fresh air. The dirt road was never a problem, even with a small car. The layout is excellent with its two separate wings, allowing for privacy for more than one couple. An unfortunate fall found competent medical care at the Espanola Presbyterian Hospital Emergency Room. The house is well stocked with an abundance of supplies, spices, teas and coffees, herbs, even roasted New Mexican chilis (caution: hot) in the freezer. The owners are attentive. There is much to do and see in the northern part of NM and we look forward to returning.
It is hard to express how beautiful the mesa is -- sunrises and sunsets are outstanding. The house is an architectural gem and is very well appointed. My wife, father-in-law (from The Netherlands) and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is truly an enchanting place!
This house had a profound effect on me and my small dog when we first visited last October. The slow rhythm of the high desert captivated us and somehow made us both feel not only at peace, but directly part of the nature around us. In the mornings, my normally neurotic terrier would calmly stroll out into the landscape to nap in the sunlight. And in July, when I returned for another week with my husband and dog, the same gentle calmness overtook us all immediately. Perfectly placed in the land, the house is completely surrounded by dramatic beauty and stunning variety wherever one gazes. In the fall, almost all the desert colors remain but the cottonwood trees begin to glow in brilliant yellows along the edges of the Chama River to the south. On both visits, I sat seemingly forever looking out as the light changed on the dry grass, the bees worked in their mysterious patterns on the lavender beneath the giant picture windows, the jackrabbits dashed across the distance, and the clouds and sky shifted constantly on the mesas and mountains - almost as if some lighting director was playing backstage and experimenting with every possible color and light pattern he could imagine. All this beauty was on display while our day-to-day needs were met seamlessly. The beds are comfortable; the rooms are graciously sized and tastefully furnished; the baths are modern and luxurious, everything was spotlessly clean, and the kitchen fun to cook in. Being there, one feels total isolation and privacy, yet it is reassuring that there are friendly and helpful neighbors very close but out of view. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not mandatory but I found it makes the gravel road easier. Looking forward now to experiencing winter and spring on future visits.
Abiquiu on the Mesa was recommended by nyc friends who had been there last year with a fabulous family re-union and raved about it.
So our family of wife and 9 year old son headed 'southwest' and it was just the breathe of fresh air we needed.
We went to bed with the moon in a beautiful sky and woke up with airy sunlight streaming through the windows from all directions as the house sits out on this majestic Mesa in the middle of God's Country.
We cook a lot and the Kitchen had everything we could think of or needed and
it was Breakfast on the outdoor dining table as my our son was delighted to be chasing Geckos & watching ants build sand castles. It only got better from there as we went white/water rafting and found a local vineyard and wine from neighbors of the Host Couple. It is simultaneously off the beaten path but only a stone's throw from Georgia O'Keefe and much much more. We had a tremendous experience and have all ready booked time for next year with some Family.
GO ENJOY !
We spent a wonderful month long vacation on the Mesa and enjoyed every minute of it. The house was tastefully appointed, comfortable and welcoming. Many places to curl and read, enjoy the view, or have a cosy dinner party. The outdoor space was perfect, we grilled just about every night. Loved taking advantage of the Sauna and it's private portico.
The pantry was very well appointed with spices, paper products, pots, pans etc. Nothing was missing.
The bedrooms and beds were very comfortable. Everything was clean and well-maintained.
Lilyan answered all our questions and was very helpful at all times.
The location was great for exploring near and far. From a hike down the wash to the river, to a drive to Taos or Sante Fe all was well with in reach. Especially enjoyed the Rio Arriba rodeo, our tour of O'Keefe's house, Ghost Ranch, and hiking up in the cool mountains above Los Alamos. We made several trips to Ojo Caliente for yoga and spa.
It was one of the first month long vacations where we just stayed in one place and relaxed, and this was the perfect place.
The home is on a high mesa surrounded by the Sangre des Cristo mountains and easily accessible to Santa Fe (opera Indian market films theater galleries and boutiques) and Taos(the 1000 year old pueblo). We are 15 minutes from Abiquiu the home of Georgia O'keefe, the lake, Ghost Ranch and many beautiful hikes and trails. We are near Ojo caliente old and famous hot springs plus many attractions in Northern New Mexico.
