Overall this was a lovely place to stay for the money but don't go there thinking its 5 star and you

  • 3 of 5

This cottage has a fabulous location if you enjoy the beach and the sea and do not have any mobility issues. The path down to the cottage is rather steep and badly made (new step construction seemed to be underway but not finished at the time of writing) but lugging suitcases down here is not easy and up is worse even though there is an alternative longer pathway through the garden thus minimising the hill. The cottage only has basic furniture in the bedrooms most of which is old white painted utility style and all are full of towels and linens so you need to evict these before you can store any clothes - there is only one wardrobe - in the second bedroom - but this is stuffed full with a blow-up boat and ironing board and butlers table and various other bits so no room for footwear - the shelf above is also full of extra pillows and quilts etc. The bathroom sink cabinets have blown chipboard furniture under them (obviously due to previous water damage) but its good to have a sink in each room as there is only one bathroom. The kitchen is basic and you need to buy things like salt and pepper and oil and anything else if you are intending to cook - having said that, the cooker, fridge and washing machine are relatively new and therefore totally fit for purpose. The bedroom curtains are lightweight nets and therefore let the light in if this bothers you - take an eye mask. There is no air conditioning downstairs and this area would greatly benefit from having fans installed or free standing as its hot and uncomfortable for newly arrived people.

The positives are that everything was spotlessly clean, sinks, fridge, cooker, linens, towels and floors etc although I did have to clean out the shower plug as it was blocked with scum and hair - yuck!!! but there was Drano provided in the cupboard and a good overnight soak and then hot water sorted it.

Overall this was a lovely place to stay for the money but don't go there thinking its 5 star and you won't be disappointed - more like a 3 star with benefits of a 5 star location.

If you want to eat out go to the Fish Pot down the road a little way its fabulous - lunch (one course) with pre-lunch cocktails and a reasonable Rose wine followed by a shared desert (the most fabulous brownie) was US $100 - seems average for Barbados nowadays.

Massys supermarket in Holetown has everything you want (Waitrose branded stuff for English visitors!) otherwise Jordans in Speightstown or ladies sell veggies on street.

Beach was the best part. House is a bit more worn and run down and not like the pictures.

The place could use some updates/improvements. Curtains are ripped/stained. Pillows could be refreshed (ie new pillows) as well as the linens. They’ve been washed so much they are quite worn and had a “perspiration” smell even though they were apparently “clean”. Shower floor needs repair. There is a pool of water left after ever shower that doesn’t dry up and quite frankly I was afraid to step in that section as I didn’t want to pick up any potentially growing bacteria. Views from the balcony however were spectacular and having access to the beach was terrific. Folks asked if I would go back....answer: Only if there are improvements to the property.

Waterfront and facing west! Extraordinary!

  • 4 of 5

Well, what can I say. Having the waves crashing almost in your bedroom. Turtles, fireflies, monkeys, flying fish and an inquisitive neighbour cat - all without leaving the deck. All the amenities you could need in a vacation rental are there. The privacy lets you feel like you just live there. Bring sunscreen and a swimsuit. Unfortunately, the bathroom needs some help...thus 4 stars. Otherwise, would gladly stay at Wilmar House again should we find ourselves in Barbados in the future.

If you rent a car, don't let the location put you off - it is a small island. Easy to get around.

Fun in. The sun!

  • 4 of 5

Just returned from a wonderful vacation in Barbados. Had a great time, the House and property are beautiful. We rented a car and that really is a must. The home is about 30 - 40 minutes from downtown Bridgetown depending on traffic. We enjoyed being out of the city but renting the car gave us the opportunity to visit the beaches and attractions on our time. The property caretaker is a very pleasant and nice man, very willing to share information about the island to help us with our stay. The owner is very easy to deal with, he arranged for our ride from the airport the night we arrived and answered all questions we had about our stay. I would definitely love to work with him again and would recommend this property to anyone wishing to stay at this paradise in Barbados.
