A unique opportunity to sleep and relax on the majestic Hudson River only one hour from the great cultural center of New York City. Located on a quiet street that ends at an entrance to the Palisades State Park with a 5 mile bike/hiking trail along the Hudson. Five minutes away you can take a small ferry across the river to the Hudson River train line to Grand Central Station. Very unique location with spectacular river views. You can visit the museums and theater of NYC and come home to hike and relax and listen to the sound of the river. We have a stairway down to the Hudson and provide the use of a canoe & kayak and a fire pit on the shores of the Hudson. The house is a 5 minute drive from the Village of Haverstraw with an array of Latino food and small bodegas and 15 minutes from Nyack, with its charming shops and restaurants. Bear Mountain & Harriman State Park are within a half hour drive with a myriad of amazing hiking trails.
My husband, Jim & I both grew up in the midwest- he by a lake & me on a farm but we are both artists and professors and work in Manhattan- this property made it possible for us to have it all.
Joan Harmon purchased this house in 2000
The proximity to the cultural center of NYC with a State Park trail along the Hudson and beachfront where we can swim and canoe & kayak- this is unique and very special. The addition of a ferry service to the Metro North makes country/city living a dream.
The majestic views of the Hudson and the sound of the water as you sleep at night and the chance to sit and walk by the river made me fall in love- its all about the magic of the riverand having a State Park trail along the river at the end of our block.
Thanks you for making your home our home for an extended weekend. You have no idea what an escape to a small river town means to four exhausted city girls. Being able to boat, hike, swim and cook is exactly what we'd dreamed of doing this Labor Day weekend. This is the type of artistic retreat we one day dream of owning. Thanks for your hospitality.
We loved the Hudson River views from this quiet artist's retreat. Lovely hot tub deck with sweeping views and private beach access. Great time to be here for fall color and eagles flying overhead. Walked in Palisades Park just down the residential lane and hiked up to the hawk watch on Hook Mt. a short drive away. The funky neighborhood is a secret waterfront enclave that serves as a great base for a weekend of hiking and birding! Clean, comfortable, art-filled home!
Joan and Jim were very responsive and Jim met us at the house at check in. He was very friendly and very helpful in telling us about the house and the area. As other reviews have stated the street is tight, crowded and not attractive, but the house is so nice. We were with another couple and found the house to be roomy and comfortable. The bedrooms are large, have closets and the windows look out over the river. The deck and outside are going down to the river are wonderful. The kitchen was adequate and the dining area had the "view". The only bad surprise was watching TV and feeling that the train behind the house would surely come in. It is really loud and disruptive and seemed to go on at all hours. The TV however is good, as is the internet. This was a great location for exploring Nyack, West Point and several beautiful State Parks and bridges. I would recommend this property.
We had the opportunity and pleasure to spend 4 nights in this property while attending our daughter's wedding. The property is very unique from the location literally right on the Hudson River to the decor including thought provoking art. The bedrooms are large and the beds and pillows very comfortable. We spent most of our free time on the deck overlooking the river appreciating the view and enjoying the peace and quiet. It has a large flat panel TV but honestly we never got around to turning it on. The kitchen is fully furnished including little touches like real maple syrup for pancakes/oatmeal, spices and ice cream in the freezer (we replenished the supply when we left).
Previous reviews have commented on the neighborhood. Our experience is that the neighbors are very quiet and respectful and the people we interacted with were friendly and helpful. The location is close to shopping and restaurants and the hiking/biking trail at the end of the road is an added bonus.
We will have occasion to travel back to Haverstraw periodically and without reservation we will look to stay at this very special property.
The river view from the house was truly breath taking. There is a large deck on the back of the house and a stairway to the private beach which features a cabana with electricity and stove. You know right away by all the special touches in the house that it is owned by a talented artist. We were very comfortable there and we hope to return in the future.
While the neighborhood seems a bit rundown- the house is a wonderland of views besides a great kitchen and countless amenities. The house is immaculate and well designed for maximum relaxation and enjoyment.
Joan, Staying in your home was a wonderful experience. The view was spectacular and everything about it was splendid. Enjoyed the hot tub and the bicycling trails right down the street. Anyone looking to get away and relax this is the place to go. You and your husband were wonderful hosts and your pick for dinner (Union) was spot on. Can not thank you enough for our stay.
