About Kay and Augusto

We are a couple with four children who have enjoyed living in Bar Harbor since 1995. We are both architects and have lovingly restored this gem of a home to its glory while incorporating modern amenities and our own touches. We own another Bar Harbor property as well - the Cottage on Cottage - and enjoy traveling (we always rent homes when we travel and enjoy being able to provide similar comfort to other travelers!)

Kay and Augusto purchased this house in 2000

Why Kay and Augusto chose Bar Harbor - Mount Desert Island

We purchased this home because having had few owners before us, it had retained most of its original features and charm, and as architects, we knew good bones when we saw them! Since then, the home has been totally renovated, and serves as an excellent design laboratory - even our most discerning clients have appreciated the hospitality and ambiance of this home!

What makes this house unique

The fireplaces, the wooden fretwork, the massive entry columns, oversized front door, the diamond paned windows...they just don't make them like this anymore! Elegant, but livable and oh, so well located!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful experience at Kay and Augusto's house in Bar Harbor. The location was perfect, within walking distance to everything in the town. The house was the perfect size for us, 5 couples. We had space to be together and to be alone as well. We cooked most of our meals at the house and were pleased to see the kitchen so well appointed. Kay was very helpful, even checking in with us when she'd heard the power had gone out. The outage didn't last long and was back on before dark. I would love to come back to Maine and their house is the perfect place to stay. Thanks to Kay, Augusto and Anne for making our stay memorable.

Eclectic Yet Vintage

  • 4 of 5

Great location to downtown and also Acadia. The house itself was a perfect size for the 8 of us. It was nice having the TV room out of the mainstream so it wouldn't wake anyone up. Likewise, the parlor was perfect for us all getting together to determine the course of our day/night. The nice large porch was perfect to sit outside for some family time.

The floors/rugs could have used a deep cleaning but everything else was really clean. Comfortable towels and bedding which is always a plus in my book.

Kay was very responsive when we were asking questions about the house. Would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for choosing our home for your stay in Bar Harbor! Had it not been for the family wedding I had going on that weekend, I would have loved to meet you. We appreciate your input and will make sure the floors get extra attention. So glad you all enjoyed it and we'd love to have you back!

Comfortable Elegance in Town

  • 5 of 5

Our large multi-generational family group could not have been more comfortable and at ease in this wonderful home! We gathered for a College of the Atlantic graduation, and were easily able to invite friends to celebrate with us in the relaxed and spacious home. Even with rain, we could all fit indoors in the many living areas. The kitchen is beautifully equipped to cook for and serve a group. Early risers gathered in the breakfast nook for a cup of coffee before a hike or paddle, and evenings found us all gathered in the dining room over dinner and games, or curled up in the living room with a book. The front porch was perfect for watching the world go by from a shaded rocker. The location right in Bar Harbor made a flexible and convenient starting point for people to explore without needing to drive anywhere. We could not have asked for a more pleasant week in Bar Harbor! Kay and Augusto have thought of everything guests may need. Perhaps most surprisingly, this is the first time - after many VRBO rentals - that the photos do not reflect the spaciousness of the home. It is much larger than it looks! With 10-12 people staying -- and a handful more for meals, it never felt crowded. I highly recommend to anyone who cherishes the charm of older homes, especially ones that are so clearly loved and cared for by their owners.

Bar Harbor comfort & convience

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful historic home. Very cozy & spacious. Lots of unique features; the 3rd floor suite, the butlers pantry & bar, the inside stairway and even the den/TV room. 4 mature couples, we had plenty of space for everyone to relax and do their own thing, private and group spaces. Well equipped kitchen. Great little breakfast nook. Everything you need to feel right at home. Great location. Quiet street yet only 2 blocks to the grocery store in one direction and just several blocks to town in the other. Short walk to fabulous restaurants & taverns. No need to worry about driving home or parking. Just minutes to the park loop road and entrance to Cadillac Mtn. You can walk to the Bar Island access. Highly recommend. Many thanks to Kay & Augusto for sharing their special home!

Center for a Wonderful Family Reunion

  • 4 of 5

Our group consisted of 8 adults and a 2 year old who gathered for a memorial service for Grandma. The house was a perfect place for us to gather. It was very spacious with wonderful spaces that we could sit around and chat and enjoy a glass of wine. The bedrooms were as advertised and there were 4 full baths. Everything we needed was in the house. We were very comfortable there. Since this is a very old house, there was almost no overhead lighting, just table lamps. Putting on makeup in the bathroom was a bit of a challenge due to the lighting.

The house was right in downtown Bar Harbor and it was a short walk to the main road, shops and restaurants. We were lucky enough to see the Bar Harbor Bed Races on the Saturday of our stay. Of course, the entrance to Acadia National Park was a short drive away.

The owners provided us with plenty of information before we arrived and promptly answered a couple of questions that we had. The binder of info that was in the house was very helpful. This was a lovely home and I would recommend it as a great place to stay.

Owner's Response: We were very happy to be able to accommodate these guests for their late-season family gathering. They were lovely and gracious. We are grateful for their recommendation. Just a quick response regarding lighting: The dim lighting noted was in the master bathroom - we acknowledge this, as a previous guest had pulled too hard on the sconce in that room, breaking it, and we had not been able to order a new fixture and schedule an electrician prior to this guest's visit, and had to temporarily place a lamp in there. We agree it was not bright enough and regret any inconvenience to this guest. That repair has now been scheduled and will not be a problem for future guests. We also note that we have recently updated many rooms, especially the kitchen, to include new overhead lighting.

Eclectic Historical Home in Prime Location

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful historic home was the perfect home base for our Maine adventures. The house truly is unique with lots of eclectic decor and all the amenities you could need. We were walking distance from the quaint little downtown area with lots of great restaurants, coffee shops and local stores. Even the harbor is just a short walk away. We spent each day exploring Acadia National Park, which did not disappoint. We loved that Bar Harbor was welcoming of tourists, but not overrun by them. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway, this is the right spot.
