church retreat
This was our second year here for our church retreat. It is ideal for such a gathering. The dining hall is very well equipped to cook, serve and clean up for a large group. There is plenty of room to accommodate sleeping such a group and there are plenty of bathrooms. It is close to lots of hiking trails and close to a bowling alley for evening entertainment. We had a great time.

Incredible experience
14 family, 17 months to 68 yrs thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Plenty of clean Mountain air. Great space and views. Lots of entertainment when not on the lake. The lake is wonderful. Steps to canoe, kayak and paddle boats. Great breezes and cool nights. Red room is full of entertainment. WE we rarely had tv on except for a rainy day. Comfortable home with about everything you will need. Hiking, parade, ice cream and great rodeo highlighted our stay. Highly recommend a visit

Really great for a group
This place is huge! We had 7 families and only 2 families had to share a jack and jill bathroom, but otherwise we each had our own bathroom. There are multiple kitchens and places to relax. The kids watched a movie downstairs while the adults played games upstairs. The best was the beautiful constellations we could see at night. Some of our friends brought their ice skates and went out on the ice every day. This was a great stay to ring in the new year. Some of the furniture/sheets seem a little outdated and a few cobwebs here and there (it is a remote cabin afterall), but for the most part we had a really wonderful time!!

Great for a family reunion
We have stayed here for 5 years and have many excellent memories. It's rustic, but we love it, and find all it's quirks to be endearing.

About the host

Host profile image
We are a family of four who have grown to a family of 10 when we include our married children and grandchildren. All our children and grandchildren have worked for us in our nearby businesses. One of our hobbies is renovating buildings. This lodge is one of those hobbies. Just 2 hours from Colorado Springs, this lodge is our refuge and reward for all our hard work. We absolutely love it here because it is a place of complete tranquility and peace. We love gathering with family and friends and realized it would be a perfect meeting place after sharing holidays with up to 30 of our extended family here in Colorado. In the days of the Spanish Conquistadores the valley was known as La Mojada-the “Wet One”. Today the Wet Valley is part of a Scenic Byway-Frontier Pathway with over 323 days of sunshine. “La Mojada”, Custer County, Westcliffe, Colorado, Sangre de Cristos-whatever name you use for this place, all of them conjure up the time and spirit of the Old West. With a history of silver, gold and cattle ranching-where such names as Bull Domingo Ranch are part of the local color, the Lakeshore Lodge on Lake DeWeese in Westcliffe, Colorado stands apart from the rest. When our family came to Colorado over forty years ago, we were searching for a weekend retreat large enough to shelter our family and all the grand children we hoped to have someday. We looked for a place of comfort and quiet close enough to drive after a long week running our family business. We found it in Westcliffe and over the years we have saved and built and created a place with our own hands. A place we think of as just about the most beautiful and most restful in our beloved Colorado. Today we are blessed-better than we deserve-all together there are more of us, give or take a few friends some of the grandchildren are always asking to bring.

Why they chose this property

“Simple Pleasures-Profound Peace” Our beloved “Wet Valley” has changed so little over time. We watched others towns all change beyond recognition. Not our Westcliffe. With all of its beauty, the biggest change has been the designation of our lake as a state wildlife reserve and the area as a Frontier Pathway-Scenic Byway ensuring they remain unchanged in perpetuity. Westcliffe is known as the place where successful people come to be regular Joe’s. That sums it up. Nobody puts on airs in Westcliffe. Remember what “It” was in the Billy Crystal movie “City Slickers”? If you get “It”, if you understand what is important in life- hard work, playing hard and the love of friends and family, then you will “get” Westcliffe and come to think of it as part of your family history. We chose to purchase the property in Westcliffe because we could own the land and waterfront. We knew that this would always be so because the Lake has now been closed to further development and designated as a state wildlife refuge. Its proximity to Cripple Creek sold us on the place, it is close to home. Finally, Westcliffe is one of the most beautiful spots in Colorado! There are some cabins near the lake, there are only three families that own their land and beach on the lake.

Our favorite guests are folks who like rustic mountain cabins, love wildlife, campfires and low-key vacations. Understand that manicured lawns with non-native flower beds are NOT part of a wildlife refuge. This is not a place if you don't understand that birds need grass seeds and bugs to eat. This is not the place for you if you are not charmed by our muskrats feeding at sunset or a harmless gopher snake. This is not the place for you if you need a sanitized Disneyland. The lodge is clean, comfortable and cozy. It is our home-not a hotel. You will have everything our family wants in a vacation rental.

What makes this property unique

We enjoy all of the fruits of the valley when shopping for fresh produce and meats. We like to cook family meals outdoors, take long walks, swim and fish in the lake, and dip in the pool. We also enjoy family game nights. Simple and satisfying. Gather together easily in 7 bedrooms, 6 baths, kitchen, a great room, media room and loft Down at the Lake Meeting/Recreation room there are over 150 ft of waterfront, kayaks and paddle boats for exploring the 10 miles of shoreline or trolling for fish. There’s a fireplace, pool/ping pong table and a few vintage arcade games the kids have collected over the years. (We’ve even been known to banish the personal electronics and engage the grandchildren in spirited board games or the excitement of our collection of vintage jigsaw puzzles!) Once the stars come out, strike up the fiddle or unroll your projector screen. We’ve created an outdoor amphitheater perfect for campfire programs, outdoor movies or singing songs under the stars.
