...we headed to “Villa Eluna” in Soufriere in the South West of the island, positioned right beside the iconic Petit Piton and Gros Piton Volcanos. Our view and accommodations were heavenly. As soon as we walked into the villa, I gasped and was pumped for the rest of our stay on the island. If I were to ever venture back to St. Lucia, I’d want to bring some friends and stay here again...for the rest go the the blog http://wp.me/p1Zkjv-7p

Vacation Perfection

  • 5 of 5

First and foremost, the staff is incredible. Susan was amazing beforehand answering the millions of questions I had and with a quick response. Cornelius, Keisha and Chandler were amazing. We saw Cornelius every morning and he was funny and always answered any questions about what to visit in the area and always made sure the pool was pristine, which was hard since it's next to the forest. We also hired Chef Basil twice. Each meal was incredible and we enjoyed his company and chatting with him after dinner. Keisha came Mon, Wed and Fri and left the house spotless and even did our laundry for us. The house is in a perfect location. Yes, there are neighbors but you still feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. We spent most of the time in the villa in the pool. The view is breathtaking and we watched every sunset during our stay. The floors are concrete and the open air of the doors and windows make it quite comfortable. There are fans in the bedrooms and I never woke up hot. The only issues is the water (and not something I think they can help). You can only run one thing at a time or there is no pressure, so we had to time all our showers. However, in reality, that is a minor complaint in comparison to the beauty of the villa itself. If you are an animal lover it may be hard seeing all the cats and dogs roaming the island. There a a couple of cats near the villa. My mom and I couldn't help but to feed them. We named the oldest one Soufie and he would lounge by our feet and let us pet him. There are several restaurants in the area. Bring your life savings. Nothing it cheap, not even lunch. We highly recommend Orlando's in town. It was so good, we went twice! He even made us a special menu our second night. Others we tried and liked were Martha's Table (take a left out of driveway and it is on the left), Dasheen, Humminbird and Mango Tree. We suggest staying away from Boucan. The service was terrible and the food was mediocre. Definitely do the volcano and botanical gardens. We also enjoyed Sugar Beach, but if you don't eat there you have to park far away and the walk back is intense, and my husband and I are fit. The drive to the rum distillery is worth it and if you like rum, stock up there. It's super cheap! Don't waste time going to Castries. It's dirty, busy and everything is massed produced. If you are looking for local artwork, try Zaka, in town. Can't recommend Villa Eluna enough. Best vacation ever!!

wonderful honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

We had an incredible honeymoon at Villa Eluna. We spent our days floating in the pool and our nights cooking or dining out at one of the incredibly convenient resorts. We loved eating at Hotel Chocolat and Martha's table and also enjoyed the spa at Sugar Beach (all of which are at most 5 minutes by car). We opted to rent a jeep through Cool Breeze and the Villa Eluna staff helped us to orchestrate this (as they helped us to navigate everything) with great convenience. Jennifer, Ray, and Chandler were delightful, and helped us to relax and enjoy our honeymoon. Yes, there was some construction noise, but not to the extent that it kept us from enjoying the house. Basically, as wonderful as the island is, wherever we went we wondered, why aren't we back at the house, in our private pool enjoying our gorgeous view?

Beautiful property, awful construction noise

  • 2 of 5

I spent months researching properties for my family in St. Lucia and booked Villa Eluna 8 months in advance. We were very excited for our vacation and had great expectations according to the reviews and photos.

First off, Villa Eluna is a stunning property and the staff (Jennifer, Ray and Chandler) were incredible. Extremely attentive and friendly. I must admit, they were the best party of our vacation. My son's birthday was during our stay and Jennifer came on her day off just to bring him a gift.

However, the construction noise was NOT DISCLOSED and absolutely ruined our stay. The property does not have glass windows (they are all screened) and the noise from the construction below began at 7 am and continued until 4 pm EVERY DAY except Sunday. You could not hear yourself speak, it was so loud. We did spend time exploring the island, but the day we earmarked to stay at the villa to enjoy the pool and the view was quickly changed because the noise was unbearable.

We traveled with friends that stayed directly across the street from us in a childhood home of one of our companions, and the noise could not be heard from their house. It is the position of Villa Eluna that makes the construction below so noisy. According to locals (including Villa Eluna's architect) a projected timeline for the end of construction (the house below and the luxury property on the other side of the street) was unknown.

Safety is definitely an issue. We were told not to use the path to town as too many tourists were robbed. Being with our young children this made us very uncomfortable. The townspeople we encountered while being in Soufriere were very destitute; approaching our car, our children and begging for money while banging on the windows. We have travelled the globe and never experienced the aggressiveness of Soufriere.

I responded to a post-stay survey from the owners rating our stay. I was very clear about how dissatisfied we were about the noise and the construction not being disclosed. After 8 months of quick email responses when I booked our stay, I had NO RESPONSE about my survey after multiple emails directly to the owners. This is absolutely unacceptable.

With the negatives out of the way, we enjoyed Sugar Beach, ziplining, dining at Hotel Chocolat, dinner and drinks at Mango Tree and fire dancers at Fond Doux. As a family we would definitely go back to St. Lucia but would absolutely find another property.

Fabulous villa, perfectly staffed.

  • 5 of 5

First of all, a five-star rating to the (local) architect. There is one enormous main room, with ceiling-high jalousie windows which can be opened or left closed - but with insect screens and not glass. This means you can go indoors during the day and still enjoy the sunlight, the breeze - and the incomparable view. This avoids the usual problem where you are forced to choose between getting sunburned outside or being stuffy indoors. We all found the place both practical and beautiful (not a common combination, by any means).

For our eight-day stay we were hardly bothered by noise (see reviews below). The villa is not in a cloistered hotel compound: inevitably in the course of a week there will be road noise or sounds from people strimming weeds or doing building work, but in our experience this last was only for a few hours of our stay, and was not particularly annoying even then.

The pool was very well maintained (yes, there will be a few floating leaves by the end of each day - but this is the tropics - and I like the leaves). Fabulous gas barbecue and very good pool furniture and shades - though, as a warning to other pallid Brits, you can still get slightly sunburned under these as they only block some of the sunlight.

Indoors there are two super bedrooms with ceiling fans and very comfortable large beds. Well equipped kitchen. Large fridge freezer. Television with Apple TV. Slightly intermittent internet - but mostly works fairly well - and not bad by the standards of the island. Probably could do with a microwave, but no big deal.

Other commenters below are right: do hire a jeep rather than a sedan, and be careful on the concrete road to the villa (engage 4wd and go slowly) especially after rain. The road is perfectly safe but slippery when wet. Best to book a taxi to villa on first day and then get a jeep delivered the next day - I always do this, as I am not in the mood to deal with hire car bureacracy straight after a long flight. Also recommend getting food delivered to villa, or using the superb chef, Basil, as local shops are limited. Enjoyed visits to Boucan and the Mango Tree at Stonefield. Martha's Table is reputedly good, but was being renovated for the week of our stay.

The staff who will meet you and look after you - Jenifer, Ray, Chandler - are truly wonderful. They made what would have been a good stay in a wonderful building even better. I cannot thank them enough.

Would I stay there again? Definite yes.

Not the quiet, secluded romantic getaway we hoped for

  • 3 of 5

I would have given this 3.5 if I could have. This property is now in need of some updates to bring it back up to the 4 or more level. It is not luxury, it is more rustic than I expected considering the pictures that lead you to believe it is 5 stars. There are many inconsistencies in the pictures. Many small things need fixing that do make a difference when you add them up (ie. sheets ripped/piling, taps rusting/loose, cracked window etc)

The staff are lovely, attentive and friendly. Although the housekeeping could have been a bit better (toilets didn't seem cleaned?) is supposed to be there from 9-3 3 days/week, but I can't figure out what she does for 6 hours. It was great to have the security guard. I never felt unsafe at all. It is recommended that you lock your doors at all times. The gardener does a wonderful job of maintaining the property.

Our major complaint is that this is not a house for a romantic getaway. It is noisy, and not at all secluded. They say it is on 1.5 acres which makes you think it is secluded. It is just off a main road that has large trucks rumbling up and down it all day. There are many properties all around it, although none of them can see the pool area. You look down upon the ugly roof of another property, and if there are residents you can here them clearly (ie. kids shouting). The construction is in full swing, and will probably get worse before it gets better. Right now they are working on villas down by the water. You can hear compressors all day and occasionally more noise such as jack hammers or diggers, and they have yet to start the main hotel. They were clearing bush (weedwacking) at 7am every morning. We knew this was a potential when booking, the noise was disappointing enough to warrant looking around for somewhere else to stay (unsuccessfully). We wound up spending most of our days away from the villa. On top of that noise there are roosters, dogs that bark constantly, goats etc.

As well the mosquitos are as bad as everyone says. You have to close up all the windows at 4:30 to mitigate them. This leaves the house dark and closed in feeling, you lose your wide open views, this was disappointing to us.

The central location is great, cabs to neighbouring properties and beaches were reasonable. The views out to the piton and ocean were amazing! But because of the noise, lack of seclusion and updates needed, I cannot recommend this property if you plan to spend most of your time at the villa relaxing.

Two, widely traveled couples in late 50's

  • 4 of 5

First, the views of Petit Peton and Caribbean are even better than what you see on-line. It is a five star location. The villa is also a bit bigger than we expected. A major highlight was Chef Basil. We had him prepare two dinners. His menu's do not do justice to the food he prepares. It was outstanding. He is also very professional.

St. Lucian's are funny about driving. They seem to want to scare you; spending ten minutes trying to explain how to exit airport. It really isn't that hard and there is basically one major road on island. I drove for a week and found it much easier than many other islands or, for that matter, driving through Europe. The villa is isolated, so I would recommend renting a car or jeep. We got our jeep through Cool Breeze and it was pretty dated. No problems, but it didn't inspire confidence when we saw it.

The Villa could have been cleaner. It is 3 - 4 star in cleanliness and 5 star in location. Once you find the road it is on, it's hard to find the villa as the sign is well off the main road. A sign right by the road would be a big help. A tip, most locals we spoke with didn't recognize Villa Eluna name. Strange. They did respond to Malgretoute... the name of the neighborhood.

If you have a car, you should get provisions at first grocery by airport. Larger and better selections than groceries in Soufrerie. We enjoyed walking about this town; but it won't be for everyone. It is authentic; with a real economy and real people. Some folks hawk their wares, but not bad at all. Some are actually quite helpful. If you want an authentic experience, I'd recommend parking the car and walking around town. Eat where the islander's eat. That said, Petit Peak restaurant on waterfront is for tourists, but is very good.

We hiked Gros Peton. We all felt it was harder than advertised. But, well worth it. Take lots of water, have good shoes and take your time. You will make it and will be glad that you did. I drove there and didn't mind drive at all.

We also hiked Botanical Gardens. Get there early. They let us in a few minutes before official opening time and it was quite enjoyable By the time we were leaving, it was very busy and it would have ruined our whole experience. Lots of busses from cruise boats.
