About Laura Norwitz

Owners Larry and Laura moved to Harlem in 2000. Larry grew up a few miles north of here, at the northern tip of Manhattan. Laura grew up in Philadelphia but is happy to be a New Yorker. We have two daughters, aged 13 and 11, who are DEFINITELY New Yorkers. Larry is a computer programmer; Laura is a teacher. Our family loves to travel -- throughout the USA, Europe, Central America, and most recently Southeast Asia -- but with the girls in school it's hard to get away. So hosting visitors from all over the world is the next best thing.

Laura Norwitz purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Laura Norwitz chose Sugar Hill

We were living in an apartment in Brooklyn, but once we had our first child wanted more space. Brooklyn has become so fashionable that we couldn't afford a house in Brooklyn and had to 'settle' for Manhattan!

This house still had traces of the glory days of its construction -- fantastic wood detailing, for example, and an elaborate dumb-waiter wheel in an upstairs closet-- though like its sister houses it had been much neglected during Harlem's decline and was pretty much falling apart. (Like many houses in the area it had been converted into a rooming house and the grand rooms chopped into tiny boarding units.)

With a grand house like this we find, sometimes, that we don't own the house -- the house owns us. Being the steward of an historical property like this is a responsibility -- we want to preserve and enhance the beauty of the architecture, even if it might be a little fancier than our personal taste.

What makes this apartment unique

The flowers filling the front stoop and entry area makes the house a joy to come home to. And the tranquil back yard filled with tree shade and birdsong makes you forget you are in Manhattan.

Excellent séjour !

  • 5 of 5

A recommander absolument.

Charming and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this place. The location is excellent (several buses and trains nearby). The surrounding are very calm, plenty of places to do grocery shopping, grabbing a bite, etc. We really appreciated the amenities of the apartment. Comfort-wise, we couldn’t be better, this place is huge!

Laura is extremely helpful, she answers every question you may ask. We really appreciated her support all along our trip.

We highly recommend this place!

Harlem made easy.

A lovely host and hostess. we felt well looked after.

For us it was a perfect place to stay, near easy transport, no stairs to climb, a king sized bed. we enjoyed their eating recommendations.

Hope to return in the future.

Wonderful apartment

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Laura's apartment for two weeks while a family member was recovering from surgery at nearby New York-Presbyterian's Milstein Hospital (about one mile away). The apartment was wonderful -- large, clean, well outfitted and maintained, with lovely hard wood floors. Although it is located on a fairly busy street, the bedrooms (located at the back of the apartment) are quiet. Laura and Larry were extremely accommodating. It was very easy to communicate and they were able to provide a great deal of information about the surrounding area and New York city in general. Highly recommended!!!

Great location. Easy access to train.

  • 3 of 5

Great location for us. Close to our children’s place which was a 7 minute walk. Owners were very kind, welcoming and extremely helpful. The place was very historic, charming and spacious. The place was clean. But it needs a more thorough cleaning and a little bit of maintenance -dusty floors, ceiling fans, bathroom vent and light fixtures were in need of cleaning. Bathroom sink was loose from the wall and shower handle was also loose and caused extreme moments/surprises of cold and hot while showering. Smoke alarm was disconnected and missing. Locks on front doors were not reliable and one came off completely. Luckily the metal framed door was solid and locked every time. Back door had serious wide gaps that let the cold in. We were there when the temperatures were around 0 degrees with wind chills even colder. I would suggest aggressive maintenance on these very easy fixable items which would then make this historic, charming place a 5 Star place to stay and enjoy. We shared these concerns with the owners and they appear to take these seriously and will take care of them. My husband and I like this place and plan on coming back.

Owner's Response: Concerns these guests expressed have already been taken care of. Please note that the security issues were a misunderstanding. There has ALWAYS been a working smoke detector (the dsconnected one was part of an obsolete system.) And there has ALWAYS been a secure front door -- the damaged lock is also part of an old and redundant system.

The House: This beautiful apartment is on the ground floor of a four floor brownstone row-house in the Sugar Hill/Hamilton Heights section of Harlem. The house was built in 1894 in Renaissance Revival style as a single family house for a big family with lots of servants. During those years, this garden apartment was the kitchen and informal dining room, and a dumbwaiter carried fancy meals up to the formal dining room above when the family entertained.

During the 1950s the garden apartment had been converted to a Harlem hair salon, and the house above had become a boarding house, but in 2000 the house was purchased by the current owners who are bringing it back to its former glory; in 2005 the apartment was refurbished into a beautiful and spacious 2-bedroom apartment.

The Neighborhood: Sugar Hill and Hamilton Heights are a lovely neighborhood of elegant row-houses in an area that once served as the country retreat for the city's wealthy, at a time when the city included just southern Manhattan. Alexander Hamilton. a prominent statesman in the 1780s, built his country home, The Grange, on his estate just south of where 145th Street is now. Today The Grange is part of the National Parks system and can be visited at the north end of St. Nicholas Park.

When the train lines were extended north to this area in the 1880s the land was developed into elegant townhouses.

During the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s, African Americans made their mark on NYC as they had never been permitted to do so before. The north end of Hamilton Heights was known as Sugar Hill, for the sweet life available to those who could afford it.

The neighborhood is full of magnificent architecture in a variety of turn-of-the-century styles on quiet tree-lined streets dotted with lovely community gardens.
