About Bonnie & Ron Wilkins

This picture is Ron & I at the top of Mt. Baldhead, a high dune in Saugatuck. Yes, we climbed all 282 steps to this deck on the top. Lake Kalamazoo is in the background. Great view. Lake Michigan is just west of Mt. Baldhead.

Ron & I ran Wilkins Hardware Co., a unique hardware store with exceptional customer service, old-fashioned friendliness, and modern convenience and selection in the entire ground floor of the building. We made our home on the second floor, raising our 3 kids. Now we share this wonderful space with you, our guests. Welcome, and enjoy.

Bonnie & Ron Wilkins purchased this apartment in 1985

Thanks for a great 2 days. We thought the loft was lovely and beautifully decorated. We really enjoyed the location as we love to walk everywhere (15 miles on Friday!)

Great location!

  • 3 of 5

The location was perfect! Walking distance to everything! We don't care about cooking, so the lack of a kitchen wasn't an issue for us. The decor was dated and the upstairs bathroom had mildew on the shower curtain, but the master bathroom was updated and nice. We also had trouble getting ahold of the owners on a few occassions. We had trouble with our lock one night and a stranger walking by with his wife ended up showing us how to reset it. If you are low maintenece renters, just looking for a great location, this place is perfect. If you are planning to spend a lot if time in your place and want to be able to reach the owners with questions, this would not be a good fit.

Great get-away in Downtown Saugatuck!

  • 5 of 5

The Loft Apartment above the Old Hardware Store in Downtown Saugatuck is a great place to stay. The location is very convenient and the town is a super spot for a summer vacation. The Loft Apartment was very nicely furnished and the beds were comfortable. Easy access to Oval Beach...a must-visit during a trip to Saugatuck. Don't miss a trip on the Star of Saugatuck stern-wheeler out into Lake Michigan...the pier is an easy 5 minute walk from the Loft Apartment. Highly recommend...we'd visit again.

Great location! Quaint and filled with Saugatuck history.

  • 4 of 5

The location downtown was perfect, with easy parking. Could walk everywhere from the loft. Plenty of space for two people, but could definitely accommodate more guests! Cool interior, with lots of history. Overall, a great stay, but could use a deeper cleaning and possibly carpets cleaned.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you enjoyed the spaciousness and history of the hardware loft, and the proximity to all the attractions of downtown Saugatuck without the all the noise. Although we just had the apartment deep cleaned and the carpets serviced, and improve features of the apartment every year, we will attend to factors that give the impression that the apartment could be cleaner. Our guest's comfort is of paramount importance to us.

Great in-town location within walking distance of everything!

  • 5 of 5

The property was ideal for our group of 5 adults. Space to relax as a group plus two bathrooms with showers. Good location right on Butler, an easy walk to everything. Lots of charm.

Oval Beach

For more than 100 years, tourists have sought refuge from the stress of everyday life in the Saugatuck/ Douglas area - a peaceful place where no one rushes and no one rushes you. They can mellow out in surroundings reminiscent of vintage, small-town America, whose hallmarks are scenic beauty and a unique collection of shops, restaurants and art galleries. For those who want to mix relaxation with excitement, the area offers a year-round calendar of fun-filled activities and events. No wonder the National Trust for Historical Preservation designated these towns as one of the nation's Dozen Distinctive Destinations!

The two towns, nestled among towering sand dunes, are bordered by the winding Kalamazoo River on its way to Lake Michigan. Activities abound on the two waterways. Both towns maintain public beaches on Lake Michigan for swimmers and sunbathers. Saugatuck's Oval Beach has been rated by Condé Nast's Traveler Magazine as one of the 25 best shorelines in the world and one of America's 11 great Beachtowns. National Geographic Traveler Magazine agreed, rating it one of the top two freshwater beaches in America. More recently, the Chicago Tribune ranked it number one out of the Midwest's five best beaches and Life Magazine judged it Best Dune Town.

In addition to finding unique clothing and accessories for your self and for gifts, and seeing a kaleidoscopic of artwork in the galleries, we love to hike the dunes in Saugatuck Dunes State Park and Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area. We also enjoy touring the winery, farms and studios in next door harvest country. Kids enjoy sifting in the sand searching for stones & shells, including lucky stones. For more info, check out the Lucky Stone Tavern within Saugatuck Brewing Co.
