Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 5 with sofa bed

The Wild and Wonderful mountains of West Virginia are the perfect vacation getaway for this property. Only two hours drive from Washington D.C., (3 hours Baltimore, 3 1/2 hours Richmond, 5 hours Philadelphia) this private cabin is secluded in the woods and offers you the pristine beauty of the Shenandoah Mountains. Near the George Washington National Forest and Lost River State Park, there are a wide range of recreational activities: swimming, horseback riding, hiking, antiquing, fishing, canoeing, archery, as well as fine dining or simple, country eating. During the winter months, skiing is convenient. Lots to choose from or just relax and enjoy a sweet cabin in the woods.

Adventures Abound: From Washingtonian Magazine May 2006 - : 'The Lost River Valley of West Virginia has been found.' 'Tucked between two mountain ridges, the valley, a couple of hours from Washington, is drawing more weekenders. The lure is rugged woodland scenery, tumbling mountain streams, and outdoor fun - hiking, fishing, biking, canoeing, swimming, rafting, climbing, horseback riding.' You'll have your choice of the Lost River State Park, where the Hidden Trails Stables is located for horseback riding, archery, outdoor pool, tennis and a restaurant. Also nearby is the Trout Pond Recreation Area at the George Washington National Forest, with fishing, a gentle lake with a beach for swimming, lovely light walking or more serious hiking.

Serenity: The moment you enter our cabin retreat, you'll be struck by the scent of fresh pine. The cabin is inlaid from floor to ceiling with fresh pine wood and the sweet, woodsy, smell will be with you throughout your stay. It is an authentic country cabin which has been modernized, by bumping out a bay window and building a sun room, so there's lots of light to be had and includes all of the modern amenities, with A/C. You'll have both the rural mountain feel and all of the conveniences from home. Perfect for a romantic getaway or kids will love our back yard where they can knock around a soccer ball. This is a back to nature locale for a couple or a family with children.

Local Restaurants and Shops: While we are a getaway, there are still local businesses to visit during your time in Lost River. The Guest House at Lost River has fine dining with a 40 seat restaurant and bar operating on weekends throughout the year. Lost River General Store offers crafts, lunch and ice cream for tourists on the shopping prowl. Lost River Grill serves breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the year, as well as an evening bar with Karaoke on weekends. South End Grocery will offer any of your other household needs.

Awesome Cabin!!! You will NOT regret renting it!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I chose this cabin for last minute getaway! Making the reservation was easy as pie and Gordon, the owner, is very kind and responsive. The cabin itself is extremely cute – it looks much better in person than the pictures suggest!! We loved the cabin so much we barely left!! The couch is extremely comfortable and once you sit on it, you don’t want to get up! There is a fireplace in the den which when lit just added to the cabin feel! I appreciated the attention to detail in regards to the cabin’s decorations!! There are board games, puzzles and lots of DVD’s! The cabin has internet and we brought our laptop which we connected to the TV and we were able to stream Netflix with no problem! I was also very happy that there was a charcoal grill on site! We spent a lot of time outside enjoying the fresh air and grilling! My dogs enjoyed exploring the land around the cabin as well! I would without a doubt recommend this cabin to anyone and everyone, and in fact I have already recommended it to friends and co-workers!

Enjoyed the Cabin in the Woods

  • 4 of 5

Your advertisement states that there is a TV there which is technically correct but I think you should disclose that the TV is for the DVD only and there is no reception there either for cable service or otherwise and you should also disclose that there is no cell phone service there

Otherwise, the cabin and location is great and the Lost River Grill was amazing

Owner's Response: Dear Lloyd, Your critique is helpful. Apologies that you were frustrated with out cable TV. I wish you would have read the full listing, but it's correct that this section may not have been obvious to you. We actually state this in the Notes section below the Amenities. It says, "We have a flat screen TV with a DVD player. There is no cable or satellite television. So bring your DVD's. There is also an iHome port for iPods or iPhones. Cell phone reception is nonexistent in Lost River, bout our land line works." There is an HTMl cord any many of our guests attach their computers to the flat screen and play movies which they stream through their laptops. Some others have brought their Apple TV and plugged it into the flat screen. I know you had a health scare before your week in Lost River and I hope to hear that your health has improved. You are always welcome back at Cabin Sweet Cabin. Yours, Gordon

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

Gordon's cabin was the perfect place for us to rest and celebrate the new year. It was frigid while we were there but with a fire going, we were quite cozy. We rented an SUV for the weekend, and were glad we did, but it is totally doable without one. WiFi was shockingly speedy (helpful for movies, we pretended to be offline otherwise), and his cabin was stocked with everything we needed.

Owner's Response: Happy New Years and Thanks for the kind review. Winter weekend driving can be tricky with snow on the mountain, so I'm glad you felt comfortable in your SUV for the trip and driving around WV. You are welcome to come back any time. Gordon

Relaxing Surroundings

  • 5 of 5

When we rent cabins in the wood we look for a secluded and relaxing place, a cozy and clean home. This house offered all of that. We enjoyed our Thanksgiving relaxing away from our busy lives. The fireplace kept us cozy and warm. We walk around the property in the beautiful woods with our 4 year old. The beds were comfortable and there were plenty of pillows and covers . the kitchen had all the basic appliances and utensils that allowed us to prepare a modest thanksgiving meal. We also got to explore the national forest that was just nearby. The owner was very responsive, extremelly flexible and very pleasent to deal with. Overall, this was a extremelly pleasant and relaxing stay.

Cozy Cabin getaway in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

We chose Gordon's rental last minute, deciding to schedule a little getaway for just my husband and I and our dog, after a family wedding, and we are so glad we did. Gordon was exceptional in getting us in quickly, and making sure we had the great time we were looking for. At the end of the lane the cabin is on is an amazing restaurant, and then at the end of that country road is an awesome cafe - with great coffee, breakfast, lunch, and gifts. And wine! We fell in love with Lost City and with this great place to stay! Lost River State Park is amazing and so is the town of Wardansville nearby. Not that we needed to get out the cabin, it was so cozy I could sat in that sun room all day, or on the screened in porch. Well-decorated and stocked!

Felt at Home While Getting Away from it All

  • 4 of 5

After about our first 24 hours at Cabin Sweet Cabin, my husband was pretty much ready to have our mail and belongings forwarded! We treasured our escape from the city to this homey cabin in the Lost River woods and mountains. We chose this cabin because of the pet-friendly policy - our two dogs loved it as much as we did - as well as the siting, surrounded by trees, yet with a bit of a level yard and spectacular views of woods, mountains, and sky. The additional amenities of A/C and WiFi also were important to our selection and our enjoyment. Our primary goal was to do a whole lot of nothing but relaxing around the cabin, which we achieved especially in the sun room, screened porch, and yard. We did venture out to hike the trails in Lost River State Park, and to support the Lost River Artists Co-op, General Store, and Farmer's Market all just a few miles away. The owner was a pleasure to interact with, very responsive and thorough, as was the local manager on-call when minor questions arose. The owner has thought of just about everything to make the stay comfortable and ensure that guests are well provided for, with lots of information in the Guest Book, and quality furnishings, dishes, cookware, and towels in the cabin. We definitely would recommend this property to friends, and hope to bring some with us next time.
