Choosing Carlsbad as a vacation destination is a great idea. An even better idea is to come to Carlsbad and stay in our two-bedroom condominium in the Monterey-Gage complex in 'the village.' Monterey-Gage places you in the middle of everything. Most shops and restaurants are within a block or two, the beach is but a five-minute walk, and there is a convenience store right across the street. You'll have no need to drive or walk to the village because you will already be there!
Although you will be 'in the middle of everything,' you will enjoy surprising privacy, almost seclusion. And, when the kids step outside #17 they will find a lawn, not sidewalks or a street. Monterey-Gage is arranged around a grassy interior that contains two barbecue grills should you decide to do some outside meal preparation. Of course there are laundry facilities on the premises.
Public transport options are conveniently near. The train station is just a five-minute walk away, so you can go to San Diego without driving—even Disneyland is just 1h 45m away by train and bus! The 101 bus stops right in front of the property, taking you to numerous local sites, like the Oceanside Pier and the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla.
If you are driving you will appreciate #17's own covered parking space. Upon entering #17 you will be struck by its tastefully decorated nautical motif. The 51" Samsung TV is wall-mounted, safely out of the way. WiFi and high-speed internet access are both provided.
The kitchen has range, refrigerator, microwave, blender, dishwasher and everything else necessary to preparing and serving a meal.
One bedroom, 'the Captain's Quarters,' has a queen-size bed, and the other, 'the Crew's Quarters,' has a pair of full-size beds that two kids could share. For still more sleeping space the living room sofa opens into a queen-size bed.

Our second time in this property
We had such a nice vacation in Carlsbad last year that we decided to go back! We stayed at this place for the second time and again had a great time.
The location is the best you can get. Walking distance to the beach and to the village, with lots of restaurant and shops nearby. This past year they opened a restaurant/bar next-door called Park 101 which is great and very convenient for families with kids! Parents can have a beer and relax while kids can play in their fun and cozy countryard - and you will be a few steps from home when little ones get tired. Food was good, prices reasonable. And if you are there for Legoland, it's a just 10 minutes drive on I-5. The unit is clean, well maintained and has everything you need. In the past year, the owner added air conditioner units (which we did not need to use, but I can see it coming in handy in the Summer) and electronic door lock (it's nice not have to worry about keys).
Again, it was a great vacation! Thanks Hugh for having us again!

We enjoyed staying at this property for a family vacation. The location is great, with just a short, enjoyable walk to the beach, shops and restaurants. The pictures do not do the interior justice as the decor and furniture have been updated, as well as the kitchen cabinets and countertops. Everything was tasteful and very clean. We were especially pleased with how well the condo was stocked from paper products, soaps and linens to cooking utensils and dishes. As we stayed during a particularly warm spell, we appreciated the ac units in the master bedroom and kitchen area as well as the additional fans to cool other rooms. The grounds were very nice and we utilized the grill and grass area for playing ball with the kids and grilling our own seafood dinner. The owner was quick to assist with anything we needed from information about Carlsbad to returning our security deposit. We will definately stay here again on our next trip to Carlsbad. Do be prepared for the train passing through regularly. It is loud, but is part of the neighborhood experience. Also, the parking spot takes some tricky turns to fit, but is not unlike the tight parking you would expect in a beach town.
We stayed at this property for 6 days with our 3 and 5 year olds.
This condo was a great choice for our family. It's a 5 minutes walk to the beach, 8 minutes drive to Legoland, walking distance to several souvenir shops and restaurants (we specially liked Knockout Pizza, Harbor Fish, Señor Grubby's - good food and fairly priced). Such a great and convenient location!
The unit was very clean when we arrived, the beds were comfortable and it was pretty well equipped including beach chairs, towels, umbrellas. The kitchen has been updated since the picture in this listing and now has newer countertops and s coat of white paint on the cabinets.
There were only two minor downsides that honestly didn't bother us much, but may bother other people.
One is the train. The train tracks are fairly close and the trains can be pretty loud sometimes, specially when the windows are open.
The other was parking. The assigned parking spot is really hard to get in and out, specially if you drive a large SUV or minivan like us.
But those were just two minor details and weren't a big deal for us. We enjoyed our stay regardless!
I would definitely choose to stay at this unit again next time we visit Carlsbad.
Pros: This place is as pictured and described in an ideal location right in the heart of Carlsbad Village within walking distance of pretty much everything a vacationing family would need, including the beach. Actually the kitchen has been updated with new counters and white cabinets since the picture was taken. The owner graciously provided beach umbrellas, boogie boards and fishing equipment.The price is reasonable considering it is a bit worn around the edges.
Cons: Not mentioned in description: No Air Conditioning. The unit tended to be warm and muggy despite comfortable outside temperatures in July and it took effort to keep cool at night with the stand alone fan provided and open windows. Two things that can be easily improved are the master bedroom mattress and the metal security door. The worn mattress sinks in the middle forcing two people to roll into the V in the middle and it is kind of deflating to be greeted by a rusted metal door.
Since this guest's visit, ALL beds have been replaced. The twin beds were replaced with doubles. There is a new sofa-sleeper in the living room. And, air conditioning has been
installed. We might also mention that kitchen
cabinets and floors are also new.
Great Location and Value!
We travel to Carlsbad a couple of times a year and typically do a vacation rental. This was, by far, the best value we've seen in the area. The unit is well maintained, the owner was very helpful with any questions we had, and it was super close to the beach and downtown area. As someone else mentioned, we could hear the train going by. This was not an issue as I never heard it late at night and it was actually a treat for our young children to race to the window to see the train whizzing by. We definitely plan on staying again!
Location was PERFECT
My husband and I just spent the weekend at the Montery-Gage. We were thrilled with the location. The beach was a very short walk, restaurants everywhere, a large antique mall within walking distance, lots of shops; Gary even walked to the grocery store a couple of times, a bit of a hike. Even though all these things were close by, the complex is enclosed and felt quite private. We heard no one, even though there were certainly others around. We could hear the train going by, but this was not a disturbance, but for us, a rather pleasant sound, something out of the ordinary. The station was also a short distance away and we hope the next time we stay, our grandchildren will ride down and join us.
The owner was quick to get back to us and very helpful with our booking. Our deposit came back within days. The property was as presented, but larger and more comfortable than one can tell in photos. It's also an easy access from the 5 or off the PCH and we made a couple of trips to other areas for shopping and sight seeing: Solano Beach, Encinitas, Del Mar and La Jolla.
We are looking forward to going back together, and my friends who came for a day visit, are planning on renting there, too.
Choosing Carlsbad as a vacation destination is a great idea. You can improve on it by staying in our two-bedroom unit, #17, in the Monterey-Gage condominium complex in 'the village.' Being in the village puts you at the center of everything. Most shops and restaurants are within a block or two, and the glorious beach is but a five-minute walk. Even the train station is but a stone's throw, enabling you to easily get to San Diego. Why drive or walk to the village when you can stay there! Despite 'being there,' in Monterey-Gage you'll be hidden away with surprising privacy and near-seclusion.
If you are driving you will appreciate that #17 comes with its own covered, dedicated parking space.
#17 has no-one above or below and is tastefully appointed in a nautical theme. The 51' Samsung TV is wall-mounted, conveniently and safely out of the way.
If you are bringing a computer you will be glad to know that #17 comes with WiFi and high-speed internet access. The unit has a telephone for making local calls.
The kitchen in #17 is fully equipped with everything you need to prepare and serve a meal - should you wish to do so.
The 'Captain's Quarters' has a queen-size bed and its own TV; the 'Crew's Quarters' has a pair of full-size beds. Both rooms have overhead fans. Should you need additional sleeping space, the living room sofa opens into a queen-size bed.
