Why The Management Company chose Columbia Heights
I purchased this home because of the residential neighborhoood with shopping, entertainment and the metro train within a 2 minute walk. Within only one city-block, there is a supermarket open from 6am until 11pm. There are bicycle rentals directly in front of the grocery store and over 25 restaurants. There is a Yogurt store, a Vegan Store, IHOP, Five Guys, Pete's Pizza, Pot Bell, Ruby Tuesdays, Panda Express, Panera Bread, Starbucks, Subway and other eateries. The Gala Theatre provides live stage entertainment, the Washington Sports and Health Club boasts an Olympic Size indoor pool and the METRO Train takes you to most all the tourist places. The Washington Dance Institute is also in the neighborhood. To the west of the property are sidewalk cafes/bars. Some of the many stores nearby are Marshalls, Staples, FedEX, Best Buys, Radio Shack, Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond. There are famous neighborhoods nearby (within 2-5 miles) like Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, and Georgetown. The historic 'U' street corridor, known for its great jazz and blues artists, is located about two (2) miles south of this property. This area is also located in a bike friendly zone. In addition to the bike rentals in this neighborhood, bikes are readily available throughout the city at both uptown and downtown locations and if you desire to ride the bikes back to the VRBO, you may store the bikes, temporarily in the yard or in the very large hallways of this home.
What makes this Apartment unique
This apartment home is conveniently located on a quiet residential street and within a 2 minute walk to the 'Columbia Heights' Metro (train system). I encourage travel by bus, train, taxi, bike or by walking. METRO is highly encouraged because it is only a two to five minutes walk away from the home. Further, the Metro takes you directly to The Mall, The White House, The Kennedy Center, the Spy Museum, The Washington Monument, The Smithsonian, The National Portrait Gallery, The Newseum and many other places. The METRO also takes you to Maryland and Virginia. The home is tastefully decorated with high quality linens, flat screen television and a DVD player. There is COMCAST wireless internet access. There is an ironing board, an iron, umbrella, shopping cart for your groceries, hair dryers, toiletries, china ware, silverware, periodicals and loads of other accessories. The home includes a kitchen, a sitting room, a large dresser, two large wardrobe closets, a safe, a night stand and a full tub and shower.

Nice location, could have been cleaner.
When we arrived, the apartment was about 85 degrees, but fortunately didn't take too long to cool off. It is small, but we knew that when we booked it. I had talked to Lois, the owner, prior to our stay and told her to make sure we had top sheets for the beds, because I noticed on other reviews that this was a common complaint, She said she'd take of it. We didn't have top sheets and the apartment could've used a good cleaning - it was dusty, the oven wasn't clean and there was melted plastic on the one one of the burners. But the location is great! Very close to restaurants, a grocery store and some of the parks - all within walking distance. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.
Good apartment for families!
This apartment worked out really well for us! We had the benefit of 2 queen beds in the same room (for families with young children who don't want to sleep in a different room), plus a small kitchen, and an extra room for my aunt who came with us. You do have to walk through the small bedroom (which also has the washer/dryer) to get to the bathroom, as other guests noted. Also, as per other reviews, we had problems with the washer/dryer taking forever (and we wished there had been better instructions), problems finding the keys to adjust the thermostat (which is in the hall), and some minor problems getting our questions answered from the person who helps with the apartment (it would have been nice to have received the wifi info over email, since the book with that info had been removed and placed on the first floor in the hallway - which we didn't discover until day 2). Other than those minor issues, the kitchen worked out great for a breakfast of eggs and/or cereal each day before we left, the proximity to a grocery store was a big plus (and cute restaurants right near by that we are sad we didn't get to visit). The neighborhood felt very safe - lots of people walking around. We did rent a car, which worked out well for us, though parking late at night was sometimes a challenge since you have to find a spot. (The permit, which you must arrange with the property manager and pay $20 for, only allows you to park in the neighborhood... there is no guaranteed spot.) It took us 20 min. to drive to the mall - and parking there was around $20 for the day. It gave us extra flexibility and worked out well for us since we were a group of 5. I would recommend this apartment, and I would stay there again. You can also talk to Lois about paying through paypal to avoid vrbo's new annoying fees - which I really appreciated.
What a great location!
I stayed there for my 40th birthday celebration with my mom, sister, and best friend. We found the apartment itself to be sweet and quaint. It was perfect for the 4 of us. I absolutely loved the location. It was in walking distance of several stores such as Target which was perfect. We decided not to rent a car and I am so glad we did. It wasn't necessary. We caught uber to any place we couldn't drive and because of the location of the apartment it never cost us more than $10 to get to any DC spot. The next time we go to DC we all agree we want to stay here again. On our final day, the people staying below us had their car broken into because she left her cell phone it. The area felt very safe to us however. I would just caution anyone that stays there to take the necessary precautions and don't leave valuables in your car. It's a very busy area...anyone could be walking by. Despite that incident I highly recommend this place. It was great!
Too hard to sleep!!!
This unit is VERY small for the 5 people it advertises. There are only 3 rooms plus bathroom and the back room they call a bedroom/den - ha - not a chance of it being a den, it's the size of a large closet with a twin bed. How does that qualify as a den? Everyone sitting on the bed to watch TV? If you read the description that says there is a bedroom up stairs, it does not mean this unit. Upstairs is separate unit, where you can hear every step. There are THREE reasons you cannot sleep well in this unit. 1) the floor creaks with EVERY step. Not so important until someone gets up to go to the bathroom! 2) you have NO control over the thermostat, it's behind lock & key. So we wanted to lift the windows but the traffic noise is VERY loud, especially Mon-Fri 3) there are blinds, but it does NOT keep out the extremely bright morning sun. They could fix this problem by buying $100 worth of room darkening curtains! Also, there is a kitchen but there might be 2 pots - so if you want to cook, better make it a one skillet dinner! On the up side - the price, the location (one block over is the bus stop taking you to attractions) and there is a grocery store, target & restaurants within a block or two. Tip: As far as transportation, use UBER. Cabs are very expensive, the colored train lines are $4.50 one way, the bus is affordable at $1.75 per ride. So use the bus (limited on weekends) or UBER. We found UBER the best.
We have enjoyed great reviews on this unit and of course we'd like to continue to enable our customers to enjoy this home. So going forward we encourage each customer to note on the Key Instructions to do not hesitate to text/call/email Mr. Chiazo, our maintenance man on 202 255 5376, if they encounter any issues. Unfortunately we did not receive a call or email or text/email/call Mr. Chiazo if the guests encounter any questions or concerns. Mr. Chiazo gladly instructs the Guests that the keys to the AC/Heat Unit are secured in the drawer in the vestibule of the building. Also, we can purchase the blinds, no problem. The home was fully stocked with pots and pans but we will restock. Also, rest assured there is a storehouse in this building with extra dishware and cookware, in the event items are no longer in the home and a quick call to Mr. Chiazo, who unlocks the storage and happily provides additional dishware or cookware. This is FREE benefit we offer to all of our valued Guests. So again, Guests should not hesitate to reach out via phone call, email or text contact information provided.
Great area, great value.
This was a great place to stay for the value. Close to shopping and metro. My main complaint would have to be that the television cable did not work so we did not have TV. We are not big TV watchers so we just pulled out our books and were fine, but I know some travelers would be put out with this. The beds only had fitted sheets on the mattresses with no top sheets. I like to sleep between two sheets. Other that that it is a great vintage property with tons of charm.
We had a wonderful stay in this apartment during our recent visit to our nation's capital. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped, and the location can't be beat. We cooked most of our meals in the apartment, but we ate at several restaurants that were a short, easy walk from the apartment even in January.
Mr. Chiazo was very busy the day we arrived so it took him a while to get our parking pass, but once we received it we had no trouble parking on the street.
We enjoyed our stay very much and would not hesitate to book this property again.
