About the property

Chateau / Country House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible beds, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Staying in our Pouilly House is a wonderful experience, with families, friends, or for a romantic, cozy French country experience. This riverfront, fully furnished and equipped house is over 150 years old, originally built as a Tavern on the Loire river. Pouilly sur Loire is a lively town and 'vignoble' with wineries at a crossroads between central France and Burgundy. You'll thoroughly enjoy the comfort of this country home, the walkout gardens, the riverfront walks, and biking in the neighborhood or on the bike paths along the river natural reserves. Canoes and kayaks are available for day rentals--with pick up and drop off. There are over 40 Pouilly Fume wineries, a Friday farmer's market, 2 cafés as well as 2 incredible bakeries in less than 15 minute walk from the house.

Larger towns with festivals, historic sites, supermarkets and cinemas are 15 minute drives North or South on A77, including Cosne-sur-Loire and the beautiful medieval town--La Charite sur Loire.

In addition to the standard furnishing, the house has bikes for all sizes, barbeques, garden furniture, and wireless internet. It is a two level house, with upstairs and downstairs entrances. Both upstairs and downstairs enjoy walkout gardens with traditional stone wall enclosures and beautiful trees and flowers. Both upstairs and down have street access and parking as the house is on the corner and riverfront.

If you are ready for driving visits, Sancerre, Gien, Bourges, Orléans, Vezelay and Nevers are all great day visits--with wine tasting, cathedrals or basilicas, walking malls, and more. During the summer, another great day visit is to the medieval castle reconstruction site--Guedelon-- followed by Saint Fargeau's castle and nightly historical sound and light show. In the summer there are outdoor festivals, markets, fairs, and art exhibits all around the area--which are well documented with signage, at the tourism office, and in the local paper. A bit further long day trips or overnight trips can be made to Paris, the Chateau de Chenonceau, Les Hospices de Beaune and more. For more ideas and images, you can visit our website. The Paris airports are both accessible in a little over two hours by train or car.

The house is fully equipped with everything from outdoor dining furniture to wine glasses, TVs to salt & pepper shakers. Come with your family or friends and enjoy French country living and culture.

Pouilly House has independent upstairs and downstairs access. Please contact us for rates and details to rent just one level of this country home.

About Vanessa

This family-friendly home and garden, has been renovated by my husband and his father, with decorative touches by my father. My kids feel at home here and love coming here, playing and riding bicycles. We spend time here every year as a family and with friends! It is a great vacation home in a wonderful region, which has numerous cultural events and festivals! We really enjoy it regularly and hope you will enjoy and care for it too.

Vanessa purchased this chateau / country house in 2007

Why Vanessa chose Pouilly-sur-Loire

Our family is franco-american, and we all wanted a place to share and enjoy and relax together. This beautiful, historical site, is also homey and comfortable with a natural setting, in a small yet very vibrant town near Paris. It is well situated only 2 hours from Paris, as well as within an hour or two of hundreds of historical and cultural sites in Burgundy and along the Loire river. It was a perfect choice for our family to grow and to share with new and old friends.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our family loves to come rest, relax and recover in this home, and relax on our terrace on the spectacular riverfront. The region is beautiful, including hundreds of amazing wineries, "chateaux" nearby, historic sites, festivals, cultural events, and "brocantes" every weekend for antique lovers. We garden, take long walks and bike rides, barbeque, swim in the river, walk into town for delicious wine tasting, coffees or hot cocoa or to the market on Fridays. Pouilly is a way of life!

Absolutely Delightful! Our family will cherish this trip for years!

  • 5 of 5

I just can't say enough about the house and the area. We spent 10 days here with our parents, my sister's family and my family. It was a full house but there was ample room for everyone and it never felt crowded. My 12 year old son's highlight was catching a cat fish on the river, which we cleaned and grilled in the back yard. My highlight was the wine tours, my dad loved the dinner at the duck farm which we went to on bikes. My niece fell in love with the goats at a nearby village. My mom loved the village church and weekly outdoor market. And, my husband thought the bikes on the railroad tracks were too fun, especially with all the black berries you can eat along the way. Do your research ahead of time, as there are sooo many things to do. I highly recommend renting a car, so you can visit places like Guedelon (a 20 year project where they are building a castle using 13th century techniques).

Family time

  • 4 of 5

We spent 9 days at this property in August with our children and grandchildren. The kids loved the swings and the fruit trees...we picked ripe prunes daily and were even able to make a gateau to the enjoyment of all. Lots of toys for the children to play with as well. The property manager was delightful and helpful. We enjoyed the wine tasting in the village and daily visits to the local bakeries.

Delightful- the house, the village, the owner

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks around Christmas and New Year's at this location with our two kids and their two kids each. In addition to plenty of toys at the house for the grandkids, there was a great playground just down the road. And then for the kids (and us) there was ample wine tasting (and buying) in the village. The views from the house are great and some sunsets were remarkable. Every shop in the village made one feel welcome. I highly recommend this location.

A lovely stay in a great house...

  • 5 of 5

We spent a great week at this charming property, as a family. Myself, my wife our son (aged 2), my father and sIster and her family (a six year old and a 2 year old) and with plenty of space to enjoy the outside as well as inside, without being on top of each other.

We will certainly bear it in mind for future visits to France and I would recommend this property to anyone that is looking for a great holiday, to help them relax, unwind in a self-contained property with a large garden, as well as potential to enjoy the surrounding area and of course the local food and wines!

Our house is equipped for family vacations with 7 adult and 3 children's all terrain bicycles, BBQ, fruit trees, and a beautiful walk-out patio and garden with views of the majestic Loire river! Great walking paths, riding trails, canoe and kayak rentals....! More than 15 delicious wineries in walking distance! Wonderful weekly markets in town, and in the nearby towns of La Charite sur Loire and Cosne sur Loire! Delicious restaurants can be found within 1-20 kms--including 2 in Pouilly: Chez Memere and Le Coq Hardy. Nearby is La Ferme des Barreau in Herry--for great duck breast and foie gras! In Cosne sur Loire there is a great goat farm 'La Ferme de Port Aubry' to visit and buy authentic, farm-made Crottin de Chavinol, as well as the pictoresque cycle-rail tracks for a great family ride through the country-side. 45 minutes Northwest is wonderful the medieval castle construction demonstration at Guedelon--worth a day trip! Of course in nearby Charite sur Loire, there are musical festivals and events all summer long; as well as medieval cathedral and city fortress; and the best Specialty Hand-made Chocolates around!
