Nicely furnished large (about 800 SF) one bedroom unit with both king and queen beds on a beautiful river gorge with nearby waterfall and swimming pond. Unit has kitchen, private patio, shared sauna, cable TV, DVR and Wi-Fi. Lush quiet surroundings, yet only 5 minutes to downtown Hilo. All windows look out at beautiful large, landscaped yard - like having your own private tropical rain forest. Parking available (one car) and optional breakfast (fresh fruit, local foods, kona coffee) can be arranged.
We also have a second suite, (a studio apartment with a queen bed) available, that can also be seen on VRBO (#363493) or at Homeaway (#294283).

Directions from Hilo:
1. Take highway 19 (Mamalahoa Hwy) north out of Hilo.
2. Landmarks you will pass include the ‘humming bridge’ and the Alae Japanese cemetery.
3. Watch the mile markers. At mile marker 6, take your first left. (if you see mile 7 or beyond, you’ve gone too far)
4. Then an immediate left again until pass though yellow gate (with Enoka Place sign on it)
5. Then keep following the narrow road (VERY SLOWLY please, 10-15 MPH on our little private road, the neighbors will greatly appreciate it, thanks!) until get to row of mailboxes on right and our cream colored, white metal roofed home(s) on your left.
6. There are numbers posted on the front corner–27-1993
7. Continue on the gravel/dirt road, 100 feet or so past the mailboxes around the little bend to the second of the two connected homes, on your left.
Directions from Hamakua Coast and points North (and Kona side):
1. Take highway 19 (Mamalahoa Hwy) south down the Hamakua coast
2. Landmarks you will pass include Onomea Bay scenic drive and Pinkie’s store (big pink pig).
3. Watch the mile markers. After mile marker 7, take your first right. (if you see mile 6 or below, you’ve gone too far)

Besides the home with all its beautiful woods, we fell in love with the very convenient, yet peaceful location and the beautiful, lush surroundings and yard.
Its location on a stream with waterfall and swim ponds is a bit of heaven for us and a perfect escape from city living for us, our kids and our guests. Yet only a 5 minute, beautiful drive to downtown Hilo, its many ethnic restaurants, shops, museums, etc. And even closer to nice beaches, great botanical garden and scenic drives.
The property is great, clean, comfortable and in an isolated area that makes you feel that you're away from any crowds, except the crowd of frogs. We could not have been happier.
Good location near Hilo downtown. Hilo side of the island can be a bit rainy but worth a try.

Very nice organic supermarket in Hilo downtown (5min of drive), cheaper than safeway which is more far.
My wife myself and daughter stayed here for several nights as my son who lives in fern forest got married.Attention to detail and the little things where AWESOME , very thoughtfull.Lower unit was great with nature and flora and fauna abound , grill was fine, parking a little tight but ok, beds great , and 20 yards out back your own private river and 20 + plunge off waterfall if you are brave. Sounds of the jungle at night cool all while 10 mins max from downtown hilo.
There are a few things that the owner should clear up about this rental. First- the description says there is a kitchen- but there is no oven/stove, and to me that doesn't constitute a full kitchen. The picture also shows a dishwasher- however it isn't working (and I was told it is mainly there to add counter space). Second, the washer and dryer are outside of the unit- you share them. They are located in someone else's garage, and you do have to pay $2 for each 30 minutes of the dryer (your dry clothes will get wet coming back in if its raining). The owner doesn't really have control of this, but when you get to the house it may be messy on the outside because people live (fulltime) in other parts of this house. The suite is dark and dampish and there is nowhere comfortable to sit in the living room- saggy bamboo furniture is not my favorite. Going outside to enjoy the yard in the evening is not recommended as the mosquitos are atrocious! Also, you probably will not get cell phone reception in the basement. On the plus- the new paint in the unit is nice, there are guide books, novels, games and outdoor gear to use, and the house is very close to downtown Hilo. Also, the owner is very quick to respond to any concerns and is helpful- they purchased a brand new pack-n-play specifically for us to use during our stay. (Thanks!)
Using VRBO for the first time, I was a little worried about the reality of being in New Zealand and the contact being in America. But this rental blew those worries out of the water - firstly because the owners were approachable before the event on email and made it seem easy. After finding the unit with excellent directions, the clean property was exactly as promised. Along with the offer of using beach gear and washing facilities, this was a great little getaway. Even though there were people above us, we heard little of them as we enjoyed the comforts of a home away from home. My only minor criticism is that it could use a few more lights in the backroom (a basement flat so naturally a bit dark) but all in all, for a first time to Hawai'i this was a great location, great unit and a great rental - given the owners were in contact throughout, I'd have no issue recommending this to people whatsoever. It's good value, good peaceful location and yet close enough to the town and facilities to mean that it feels like an island getaway but with the chance to be part of a community as well. If you're ever worried about a rental, this is not one to be concerned with - it met all of our expectations and then some.
The one bedroom basement suite is a very good value for Hilo. The location is within 5 miles of the city center so with a bike or car, getting around is quite easy. There are permanent tenants that live upstairs from the room, but with the cacophony of coqui frogs, you will never know it. We had other friends in a different part of town and the frogs were just as vocal there, so it is not unique to this property. The room is essentially a basement, it is block walls and below ground level so there is a small musty smell, but nothing difficult. When I think of a view, I think about sitting in a chair, relaxing with a drink and enjoying the scenery.... for you to enjoy the view of the verdant back yard from within your suite, you must be standing and at least 6 foot tall.. I would discount the view completely. Overall, the suite had good amenities, the shower had pressure and the tv and refrigerator worked. I gave this location a good rather than average rating because at this price, you could be expecting less.
