About this property

Studio cottage with private pool situated in small hamlet

Heatable Pool !La Rueda, our cortijo and the cottage we rent, is situated 5 km outside Orgiva in a small hamlet called Los Agustines, at the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada. This is still a 'living' community of mainly vegetable farmers who till their land below us mostly by hand. Sit in your hammock and watch them. Often one of our lovely neighbours knocks on the door to share his produce with us. Every afternoon some goats with bells around their necks make their way down to the fields, or Paco or Jose go by with their mule. This place really is as idyllic as it sounds! Our cottage is set in its own small garden and is surrounded by a sea of colours and smells. If you don’t feel like cooking and want to have a relaxing time, let us know and we serve you breakfast and/or a lovely surprise dinner menu on one of our charming terraces. Come, relax and enjoy!

Activities: This area is ideal for hiking, head off on your own or on a guided tour, also horseriding is a popular activity. The nearest beach is 40 min down the road in Salobreña, a little further on you have the choice of some very unspoilt and private little coves, including some nudist beaches. Go up to the Alpujarras (20mins) and take a dip in one of the pools of the river that comes down from the Sierra Nevada, a real experience! Check out the diving centres of La Herradura. Cordoba, Jaen and Guadix as well as Nijar or the national park of Cabo de Gata can all be visited in a day. After a busy or lazy day sit down by the pool with your favourite drink and watch the moon rise or set or on a moonfree night explore the milky way or count the many shooting stars, always with a secret wish!
Sit yourself into the hammock with your book or just doze and let the day go by.

Alternative activities: Come and relax!! You want to be active? Then join us for coffee and cake in the afternoon! Maybe you'd like to be included in the daily activities? Then help us or our neighbours to pick olives or harvest vegetables or just watch us doing it. You can go for short strolls or longer hikes - down into the country, past all kinds of exotic trees and/or up into the hills and mountains of the Sierra Nevada. A short walk into the country is highly recommended during full moon! Go sightseeing in Granada with its famous Alhambra (50 minutes away) or visit the white washed villages of the Alpujarras (20 minutes away). Ask us about local handicrafts (pottery, weaving, leather weaving and woodworks etc..). Maybe you are looking for Spanish lessons? This is your home from home, just lean back and unwind!!We speak English, German and Spanish.

Culture and how to get to us: Mingle with the people and soak up the atmosphere, experience, how the locals can´t sit still once they hear a flamenco, or watch the local men in one of the street cafes of Orgiva play domino and at the same time enjoy a café con leche yourself. Taste the special foods of the area, the different cheeses, migas with sardines, papas a lo pobre and of course the famous air dried hams of the Alpujarras. Samples of these dishes are given as free tapas with an alcoholic drink in the bars. The nearest airport is Granada (1hr) which has opened up to international flights, otherwise it´s Malaga or Almeria (2hrs). A car is recommendable and we can point out a few very reasonable car rentals. If you would like to enjoy a carfree holiday, a pickup service from the airport can be organized.

Secluded and relaxing
We felt that better use could have been made of the views because the garden as lovely as it is has taken over and not been maintained correctly.Pathways and views had become obstructed and restricting even walking around the pool area and to the laundry room. There was nowhere to sit outdoors for coffee or breakfast unless you carried everything down the steps to the pool area(note the steps were very badly lit at night) because the plants had grown around the upper terrace table and a tree blocked out the spectacular view. The best view from the studio window was also overgrown. We had a large car and parking was very difficult. Also some of the equipment and bedding was due for renewal(toaster was rusty and not effective),can opener dirty, hole in a bedsheet had been sewn and sheets were faded. No kitchen roll, tin foil, clingfilm and only 1 bin liner and 6 hangers in the wardrobe. No cushions for the pool sunbeds to be found Sometimes I find having rented out my own property occasionally you have to stay in it yourself and see just how it works for paying guests. But on the plus side a quirky place with a gorgeous pool in a lovely setting

Lovely!
This little villa with its lush and flowery garden and immaculately maintained pool is absolutely lovely. There is everything you may need in the villa despite it being small. The view from the bedroom window and patio is so picturesque and relaxing. The owners live next door and maintain the outdoor spaces, but they are not at all intrusive. They clearly invest a lot of time and energy in maintaining the property and garden and this makes the experience of staying there very pleasant. If you are there for the beaches, the villa is on a twisty and small road from Orgiva, and Orgiva itself is on a twisty mountain road from the coast. But as long as you don't mind this, the drive is not too long. We thought it was nice to be up in the mountains and away from tourists. Thanks again to our hosts for the lovely stay.

What can we tell you about us? We, that is the boss, Stefan and his foreign wife Naomi and of course the lazy cat Blackey.(He,Austrian, she,British;cat, Spanish) We are all VERY lucky bums and enjoy every day anew living in this wonderful, wonderful part of the world!
Naomi and I, we are both from the touristtrade. After some years of working abroad in big hotels ( we met in Geneva), we decided to do some travelling and started with 6 month in Asia. Then, after a bit of work in Austria/Germany we went off again for 2 more years. Returning back to Austria we were thinking of becoming normal and wanted to marry, have children and save up for a house…sounds familiar hey?! Anyway we rented a pub/restaurant in Bavaria and within the first year had a crisis meeting between the 2 of us.

We decided, that these above mentioned goals did NOT justify such hard work with so many long hours! So, instead of changing the job, we changed our goals into more travelling, that motivated us enough to keep going for 5 ½ years. So then we stored our few belongings and set off on a new trip, that was in 1992…..You want to know where we went? What we did? What we experienced?
Come and spend some time with us, and we will tell you!!

Anyway, we came back to Europe in 1999 and started looking for a new home somewhere a bit warmer than in the north. We happened upon this beautiful area and immediately fell in love with it, we looked at La Rueda on a Monday and bought it by Friday, soon after Blackey moved in. After having done up the lot we thought to be able to lead a quiet life and enjoy paradise. Instead we came across this charming ruin in Guajar bought it at the spur of the moment and then saw us nearly 3 years in working clothes…Both La Rueda and La Cueva turned out unique little jewels and we´d be more than happy sharing them with you.
La Rueda und La Cueva both turned out unique little jewels and we´d be more than happy sharing them with you.

Why they chose this property

This place has got something magical about it, so we saw this house on a Monday and bought on that Friday, without thinking very long! And we never will regret it!
As one guest wrote into the guestbook: '....if only paradise will be half as beautiful as here!'
We are in the country in a small hamlet with super friendly and extremely helpful neighbours, who continuously knock on our door to share their produce with us! ....and still we are only 5ks outside of Orgiva, with all the amenities you might want. Here you can just laze the days away or you do some easy or even more advanced hikingtours. Granada is only 1hr away, the beaches of the Costa Tropical 40mins and the villages of the Alpujarra 20mins. A few guests have been here for 7 or 8 times and still always find something new to explore. Come!

What makes this property unique

La Rueda is an idyllic little oasis in the country, surrounded by flowers, bushes and trees, with all its colours and perfumes. This place is perfect to relax and recharge the batteries!
The private pool will be heatable from March 18 onwards, for which we will charge a small fee for the KWs used:
At night sit by the pool with your favorite drink and explore the starry skies or experience the rise of the moon...or...or..or just come to unwind and slow down!
