Awesome place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We arrived late on Saturday so it was a little hard to locate in the dark but when we found our way it was all we had hoped for. My wife, three teenagers and myself had a great time at the lake. We fished, boated and just enjoyed the view. In the evenings we spent a lot of time playing family games. We took a day trip to Alexandria bay and went on a tour of Singer and Boldt Castles. The cabin was very well maintained and the yard was great. If you are looking for a quiet getaway this is the place.

Our Last Day at Allen Falls Flow

  • 5 of 5

August 26, 2011

What a beautiful day! We woke up knowing that it would be our last full day of vacation and wanted to make the most of it. The sun and rain were intermittent but that didn't stop us from soaking in the lake view coffee in hand while we made our plans. I decided to take a ride up the road in order to get a signal on the I-Phone and research directions to Allen Falls. We had already spent a day hiking and swimming in Stone Valley and that was a delightful jaunt but all the reviews said "don't miss Allen Falls" so I was determined to find it. When I arrived back at the house my 22 and 25 year old sons were ready for an adventure so we decided to stop at the Birchbark Bookstore before heading over to Allen Falls. So off we went with the smell of rhubarb pie (made with fresh rhubarb from the garden) still in our memories and on our taste buds. The bookstore was filled with volumes of books on every subject. At checkout we asked the owners for directions to Allen Falls because I never did find them on the Internet. They were a few miles from the bookstore on the other side of 72. We parked after the bridge on Allen Falls Road and made our way downstream. As soon as we arrived at the falls we were wishing we had brought our bathing suits because by then the sun was shining and the water looked so inviting. When we arrived back home, my husband and son made a few final casts off the dock with bait purchased from Kunoko and a license from Walmart. We cooked up the last of our hotdogs on the grill and my dear husband took me for a final canoe ride around the lake while the boys cleaned up the dishes. As I read my book on the upstairs porch and watched the sunset behind the trees, I felt so grateful for our week at this lovely cabin in Parishville, NY.

Great Cabin away from it all

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the log cabin during the 4th of July week and it looked exactly like the photos online. It was beautiful, clean and cozy. The lake is lovely and serene. It was convenient having the canoe and paddle boat. The kids enjoyed themselves in the outdoors.

A negative and/or confusion based on the website would be the amount of beds. It says online that it sleeps 9 (although it also said sleeps 7 which would be more appropriate). There were 2 full beds (could fit 4 people on), 2 twin beds. The trundle bed did not have a mattress on it, but luckily we only had 6 people with us. They did have two cots, but we felt that doesn't really count as a bed.

Another "very minor" issue was that the website stated that there was dial-up internet access, but that didn't work due to login/password issues (although the owners did say they would come and fix it). We actually liked the disconnect anyway.

We did the hike nearby to Allen Flows Fall. It is worth going there, since it's only a 5 minute drive. Another thing that was a nice surprise was the 2nd floor porch. It was screened-in with a ceiling fan, and allowed us to enjoy the outdoors with out the bugs! I did a lot of fishing off the dock with my two small boys which was great (small perch and crappie).

There also was also no sandy swimming area on the property as far as we could determine, but the lake was swimable. The firepit was great for lake campfires and roasting marshmallows.

Places visited: Potsdam for movie and groceries, Bold Castle (1 1/2 hours from cabin- took boat out of Shemmerhorn Marina- kids liked it), and Lake Placid.

All in all this was a nice cabin on a small lake that allows for rest and relaxation. There are not a lot of tourist attractions nearby so don't expect that. As the listing states- it is good for getting away from it all and we recommend the rental for others. We did do some price comparisons with a few other lake/river rentals in the area and did find that our cabin was at the high end of the range (although we felt it was worth it because it was a great log cabin).

Owner's Response: We are appreciative of all of the "happy campers" who have stayed at our lovely log cabin. And we have decided to put a guest book there to be able to save all of the nice comments we have received from our guests. Thank you all for your notes and kind comments. We have provided brochures and information about things to do and see around our area. This log cabin is ideally situated for access to Canada, to the Thousand Islands Region sites, and for the ADK'ers who visit we are easily accessible to hikes and mountain museum experiences. I suggest that you do an online search of our area and plan your vacation as most things to do in the Adirondacks are a bit of a drive. Our sights in this area are natural sights, and you just have to drive to where they naturally occur. Our Adirondack Park Agency regulates the huge Adirondack park area and restricts commercialization. It is one of the charms of coming here. Another charm of our area is our waterfronts. We are not oceanfront with beaches made of coral sand. We have naturally occurring sandy bottom spring fed waterways and lakes. The water is crystal clear and you can see to the bottom. Our "beaches" up here are gently sloping sandy/grassy areas that open up to sandy bottom swimming areas. My cabin has 150 feet of waterfront to choose from. Our shoreline is shallow for little waders and swimmers, and Mom or Dad can sit in nice grass watching their little ones a couple of arms lengths away. Or it drops off for the bigger swimmers a little way out from the shore. Our cabin has beds for 7 and, as stated on the website, we have a sleeping porch with two cots provided for sleeping up to 9 people. We have the screened porch set up for enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning without bugs, but it can easily be changed to accomodate the cots for extra fresh air sleeping. It is great for the kids who may want to camp, but don't want to be outside of the cabin. The trundle bed is used for blanket storage for our guests, unless we have more than 6 staying at the cabin, in which case the trundle mattress is pulled out of storage and installed for use. Our lease requires that all campers be listed so that we can do a headcount for that reason. If you stay at our cabin and need the trundle bed, it will be ready for your use. We love our log cabin and know you will too. Welcome to the Adirondacks!!!

Allen Falls Flow (lake) is central to the high-peaks region of the Adirondacks, the culturally rich University cities of Potsdam and Canton, and the Thousand Islands. You can climb mountains in the morning, swim, canoe and kayak in the afternoon, go out to dinner and attend live theatre performances at night. Some of the best white-water rafting in the US is just over an hour away. The Canadian border and the St. Lawrence Seaway are only 35 minutes to the north and there is a world-class casino only 45 minutes away. There are lots of things to do in this beautiful part of the Adirondacks.
