About Anne O'Brien

The house was originally purchased by our mother in 1993, I believe. When mom retired, she made South Bethany her spring through fall retirement home. She passed away in 2004 and left the home to my siblings and me so that we could keep the tradition of gathering the grandchildren together. We have been renting it to close friends and friends of friends and decided to give VRBO a try and see how it works. We keep the house updated and clean, and it is very well-equipped and homey. I work in higher education and live in Utah, but I have three siblings in the DC area who maintain the home. This house is very special to us and we hope the VRBO renters find it as special a place as we do.

Anne O'Brien purchased this house in 1993

Why Anne O'Brien chose South Bethany Beach

At the time mom bought the house, the Delaware shore was virtually 'unknown' and she liked the quiet nature it afforded. She wanted a place where all the grandkids could gather and play, and this beach is perfect for that. We love the proximity to the beach itself and that it is a private beach. The towns of South Bethany and Bethany Beach take such wonderful care of the dunes and the shore. The beach has fewer restrictions on what you are allowed to do, but still there is a definite dedication by the residents and renters to keeping it clean and safe. The canals near our home and the bay provide a wonderful place to take a walk and spot a variety of birds and wildlife. There’s a bike path that runs along the neighborhood—perfect for a walk, run, or bike ride either north to Dewey Beach or south to Ocean City.

What makes this house unique

We love taking walks along the beach. We often get to enjoy watching dolphins frolic in the water during those walks. Since the house is such a short distance to the beach, it makes it easy to come and go throughout the day – great when you have young children or just want a quick bite to eat. We enjoy the quiet and friendly aspect of the neighborhood. Depending on your mood and activity level, there are so many activities available in the Bethany Beach area, from reading a book on the beach to bike riding to parasailing and even surfing. At night when it is quiet, we can sometimes hear the ocean. Bethany Beach is such a lovely, beautiful place that it will make your time away from home so very special.

Great getaway well equipped!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here for a birthday weekend getaway. Very nice well kept cottage in a beautiful area. Since it was the weekend of the April snow, we didn't explore the possibilities of walking to the beach but very clear directions were left in the house and it seemed like a quick walk. A short drive to center of town. Plenty of room for 4 adults to fit comfortably. I always use VRBO and have stayed in quite a few houses...I can honestly say this house had the best equipped kitchen of any I've ever been in! Unlike some houses where you have 15 crab hammers one margarita glass and 3 lobster pots but no frying pans! Not to mention the kitchen was huge and beautiful, I truly wish I could transport it to my house. I can't speak to any of the outdoors amenities as we didn't use them, but the location was great, very peacefully setting surrounded by trees, a great deck all around. Very clean and well stocked. Be aware that our one person who attempted to sleep on the couch bed was not at all comfortable, but overall a really nice affordable rental.

Happy Guest

The stay was very nice. The house has pretty much anything that you can ask for while at the beach. The kitchen is fully stocked and has all the appliances that you will need. It is only a short walk to the beach. The main city of bethany is only like a 20-30 minute walk depending on how quickly you walk. There is a store within walking distance. Very comfortable place, that has everything that you can desire from a beach trip. Bethany is a smaller city but it is only a few miles in either direction to get to a bigger city.

Joan's Ark

  • 5 of 5

Our family has vacationed in this home several times over the past 4 years and love it here! The home is clean, well maintained, and very close to the beach and Bethany boardwalk. The owners are delightful people who want you to enjoy their wonderful home and have a good vacation. The neighborhood is a quiet, residential area and perfect for families.

Joan's Ark is a must do annually for our family. You will not be disappointed in this home!

Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this house in the woods 1 mile from the Bethany Beach boardwalk and a short drive across the street to the private South Bethany beach. One can also walk though we preferred to drive. The three bedrooms were comfortable and clean as were the 2 bathrooms. The kitchen was my all-time favorite. I recommend bringing your own kitchen and bath towels to avoid having to do any laundry before you depart. Bringing your own sheets is required. The owners were organized and left an instruction book on the kitchen counter with all the info one needed to manage the household for a week. The kids were a short walk from McDonald's and CVS was 1/2 mile down the street for those last minute buys or a Red Box rental machine. The only issue we had was with the TV/DVD player and quality of screen pic while viewing movies. I believe it was the VHS/DVD player unit.

Very nice house!

  • 4 of 5

The house was very nice and clean, with a great kitchen. Although there are no big views and the house is within a development (like most in the area), the development sits within a coastal pine forest and the deck was a very pleasant place to hang out, quiet and sunny. There are beach parks and bay parks and boat rentals very nearby and Bethany Beach is a more subdued than the motel strips in the Rehoboth area. Overall we really enjoyed the rental.
