Photos and Description of this 6 bedroom holiday villa in Bucksport

Villa, 6 Bedrooms + Library, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 12-14)

At the coastal junction of the Penobscot River and Bay, the Barnard House (built in 1843 by a sea captain in the Historic District of Bucksport, Maine) is one of the most elegantly appointed Victorian houses of midcoastal Maine, with commanding views of the Penobscot Narrows and Fort Knox.

Restored to its historic grandeur in 2007-9, the House, with 6 bedrooms, 8 Fireplaces, Grand Foyer and Staircase, Library, Music Room, Grand Dining Room, is located on a quiet, tree-lined, Victorian street, within one block of Bucksport Marina (for kayaking and sailing), the boardwalk, shopping district, restaurants, bookstores, and the Alamo Theater, site of classical concerts, commercial films, and film festivals. Located between Bangor (the International Airport is 30 minutes away) and Acadia National Park at Bar Harbor (50 minutes away), there is convenient access to the four principal coastal highways of the Penobscot Bay region.

Bucksport, Maine, with its 80 foot deep water harbor and marina, was the principal shipbuilding center of northern New England during the mid 1800's. This bayside village is at the division of the Penobscot River as it surrounds Verona Island and forms Penobscot Bay at the heart of midcoastal Maine.

Across the River lies Fort Knox (1840), the principal historic destination within Maine, accessible via the new architectural masterpiece of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, linking the coastal mountains and Verona Island (which form the view from the Barnard House). The whitewater and sea kayaking, sailing, fishing, and seafood are among the most extraordinary in New England. Within less than 45 minutes is Acadia National Park, the scenic seatowns of Stonington on Deer Isle, Bar Harbor, Belfast, and Blue Hill. A stay at the beautifully appointed Barnard House is a return to the elegance, tranquility, and splendor of Victorian New England.

About Jane Moffitt

The Kernberg family, originally from San Francisco, has been vacationing in Maine for 30 years. We have enjoyed Maine's extraordinary outdoor opportunities (sailing, camping, sea and lake swimming, canoeing, cycling, photography, and hiking) and its New England refinement (concerts, antiquing, folk festivals, artists and craftsmen, and extraordinary dining). We have especially enjoyed the architectural heritage of the 18th and 19th centuries, of which, the Barnard House is one of its great treasures.

Why Jane Moffitt chose Downeast and Acadia

From the Barnard House, you can walk into real Maine: the historic district with many sea captains's houses, the nearby Marina to sail around Verona Island and Penobscot Bay, a return to the Boardwalk for a great seafood dinner, and a visit to the local bookstore for the latest newspapers, sale books, and guide books on boat building. In turn, Belfast, Bangor, Blue Hill, and Bar Harbor are all nearby, for visits to the best of the Maine coast.

What makes this villa unique

The Barnard House is a 10,000 sq. foot villa, occupying two lots: permitting both elegant indoor or outdoor entertaining or events, family reunions, a quiet read in the library, internet surfing, or a classical guitar concert in the music room, with plenty of space left over. There is a good library, a great collection of DVD's, a solid set of board games, and, several watercrafts (including a kayak) for indoor or outdoor fun.

Everything we could hope for

  • 5 of 5

What a magnificent home for our family get together! it was perfect. Each room beautifully appointed with an overall feeling of comfort and elegant ease. Great kitchen. A quiet and restful week with lovely walks, exploring antique shops and the Fort nearby, but our favorite place was sunny afternoons in the living room. A wonderful and welcoming home. We'd do it again! Thank so much.

Thanksgiving in Maine

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in Bucksport, Maine for the Thanksgiving holiday. The home was beautiful and large, just as described. The property was clean and well maintained and had all the equipment one would need if you wanted to cook your meals while you were there. The caretaker was helpful and even arranged to have two roll away cots we needed. I would recommend this property to all my family and friends!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind comments. Our family considers every guest as part of our extended family and friends, to share a New England home away from home. Every special request is an opportunity to make the House more special, so that it too becomes your family tradition.

Pre-Wedding Dinner Success

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a dinner at the Barnard house before the day of our wedding. Our cook loved the size of the kitchen and our guests were blown away by the size of the house (it looks smaller on the exterior). The house is gorgeous. It was the perfect setting for having dinner with our family and closest friends. Wished we had the reception there.
