Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cabin in Ely - Moccasin Island

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, Not Specified Baths, (Sleeps 6)

These two small secluded islands are a perfect place for couples and families who desire a peaceful wilderness-like retreat on Burntside Lake. Within view of the Crab Lake portage into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, it provides an opportunity for those who love the simplicity of camping, and the quietude of the wilderness, but may desire the comforts of a very cozy cabin. Private and intentionally simple, Moccasin island allows you to unplug, connect with family and the north woods environment. It is located four miles from a public landing. Burntside Lake is one of the 5 designated “Valuable Resource Waters” in Minnesota. It is wonderfully clear and well populated with Lake Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike, and Bass.

The cabin is located on the larger island and includes a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms with two twin beds in each. The unfinished attic has two additional twin beds and makes a great hideout for kids. The cabin also has a large full width deck near the water’s edge, perfect for dining outside and watching loons, beaver, osprey and the occasional bald eagle.

A footbridge with a boathouse and deck connects the islands. Another deck is built out over the water and provides a great place for fishing and swimming and yoga. The smaller island has a screen house with a small deck that overlooks the water, a favorite sleeping spot for some visitors. The moonrise is magical and northern lights can be a bonus.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is within sight of the island. Two canoes are provided, and it is a short paddle to the BWCA if you wish to make a day trip.

The Island is rustic but comfortable. The lights, stove, oven, and refrigerator all operate on propane gas and there is no electricity or running water. The outhouse is tidy and a solar shower is available for washing. Narrow paved paths connect the cabin to the facilities and the boathouse.

You will likely settle in, unwind and prefer to stay put once you get there, however dining is available at Burntside Lodge – a scenic 15 minute trip by boat. The town of Ely is a lively community with many shops and restaurants. The Wolf Center, Bear Center and Ely Folk School are also worth visiting. Tower, located about 22 miles from Ely, offers tours of the old underground iron ore mines.

Rent is $1,150 per week from June through Labor Day. 50% at booking balance at arrival.

Bring your own boat and motor or call us for options.

*Sorry, but due to the islands’ fragile ecosystem, we are no longer taking pets.

About Robert Hengelfelt

Moccasin Island has been in our family for three generations and is quite dear to us. Our family still makes frequent visits to the island as well as our property on the North Arm of Burntside.

What makes this cabin unique

Our family holds this property close to our hearts, as it provides such a unique opportunity to get away and connect with the north woods. As John Muir said, "Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves."

Beautiful place on Lake Burntside. We loved it.

Close to remote wilderness, easy to get to town of needed provided you have a boat. WONDERFUL!!!!

The people in Ely were very friendly.

My son and I spent 3 days here during the beginning of September. The cabin is clean and well appointed. The place is remote enough that, for the most part, we were alone. Very seldom saw another boat.

The loons sang their haunting song. We heard wolves howl from the northwest side of the lake. Their calls were answered from the west. Awsome. If you were inclined to do so, you could land the boat on the lakeshore and venture to where the wild things are. We saw 2 eagles while out fishing one afternoon. Caught pike and smallmouth. We got lucky with the weather and saw the brilliant milky way after the moon had set. Sometimes, the only sound to be heard was your own breathing. When the wind was blowing it made a wonderful low roar.

It was nice to have the boathouse. It made for easy preparation for fishing excursions.

We loved the place. Very nice.

Beautiful last minute honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

My now husband and I called about this property on a Monday with hopes of arriving that very night and the owner made it all happen! He was so willing and happy to help make our last minute honeymoon work...and it did! The cabin is so sweet and the furniture is more than fun, retro cabin. It was a perfect place to get away from it all and just relax and enjoy our time together as newlyweds. We used their motorized boat and it allowed us to boat over to Burntside Lodge one early evening to enjoy a treat there. This place really does hold magic and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a mini retreat! We also enjoyed the ability to rent it for 3 nights. Most cabins only have weekly rentals, which we didn't have time for, so this was perfect. We will most definitely be back!

A great week on Moccasin Island

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a wonderful week on the island with our three children (ages: 21, 16 and 8). The owners were very kind, and everything worked as described. The cabin had just the right amount of comfort for our taste, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We made really good bread and pastry in the gas oven. There were lots of blueberries everywhere on the islands, smaller but much tastier than the store-bought kind. Our favorite pastimes were reading on various rocks around the island, canoeing, exploring, fishing and playing games. The sunsets and sunrises were spectacular, and we spent hours gazing at the sky during the Perseid meteor shower. I would recommend this place to anyone who’d like to spend a carefree week away from the noise and busyness of ordinary life – it was an unforgettable experience.

Even better than I had hoped for

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 13 year old Son and I loved our week, except having to leave! The pictures don't due justice to the real thing. We fished, canoed, swam, hiked into the BWCA, explored Public islands, looking for Blueberries, and spent hours just looking at the incredible views in all directions. The screen porch on the other island was one of our favorite places to sit and read. the moon rises and sunsets were incredible. Our last day we were treated by a double rainbow. The owners were very gracious and helpful. Everything about the cabin was as we wanted. It was clean, the propane stove, fridge and lights all worked. If you love nature, solitude, adventure, and don't mind an Outhouse, lake bath or solar shower, this is Heaven. We have been to Mexico, BVI, and Costa Rica, and this was my favorite. I'm told Burntside Lodge has wonderful meals, and Ely is a nice place to eat, shop, and see sights; we were so happy here, we didn't want to leave for a moment.
