Description

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Jedburgh - Benfield Cottage

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Benfield is a four star cottage situated in the centre of this delightful village of Morebattle,(7 miles from the Abbey town of Kelso)set on the border with the Northumberland National Park and Scotland. Pass through the newly built enclosed porch to the lounge/dining area with its beamed ceiling and spiral staircase which takes the guest up to the double bedroom. This comfortable lounge has new furniture, a feature wall mounted electric fire with a flat screen TV above, freeview available and a blu-ray DVD. Maps and details of local walks are provided

Naturally there is full central heating and full double glazing and free WiFi for our guests.

The kitchen is well equipped for two people with full oven and hob, microwave and washing machine. A small courtyard at the rear has a charcoal bbq and garden furniture provided. The unique feature of this cottage is its decorative spiral staircase which leads up to the airy fully tiled bathroom and the double bedroom. The bathroom has a full tub with shower over and a stylish heated towel rail for the organic Egyptian towels which are provided together with hand made soap. A shaver point is located on the illuminated mirror.

The bedroom has a double bed on a pine bedstead, tea making facilities, hair dryer and wall mounted flat screen TV and radio. Egyptian cotton sheets and duvet covers are included in the tariff with the option of duvet or blankets

The guest receives a Welcome Basket with a selection of Border specialities such as local honey, hand made chocolate, cookies and oatcakes, home made jam, and a bottle of local farm fruit juice. We provide tea, ground coffee, milk, sugar and free range eggs for your arrival.

Visitors can enjoy good walking in the Cheviot Hills with lots of footpaths and great for watching birds and wildlife. Morebattle is a conservation village with a thriving small shop just along from Benfield, an award winning butchers who makes delicious haggis and sausages and stocks meat from local farms. There is a good pub/hotel which serves real ale and food on most days. In Kelso there is a thriving micro brewery at The Cobbles with a first class reputation for its food and its beer, Many stately homes can be visited within a short drive such as Floors Castle, Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, Thirlstane and Manderston .Kelso, Melrose, Dryburgh and Jedburgh, the four Border Abbeys, are all close by.The bustling town of Kelso has all facilities, while Edinburgh is only an hour away. Visit Teviot Smokery (4 miles) where the variety of smoked foods on offer is without parallel and of superb quality. Most people will want to make the visit to Holy Island, the cradle of British Christianity where the monks inscribed the Bible over a millennium ago. The founder of the American National Parks, John Muir, came from Dunbar, just about 40 minutes from the cottage and this town is located just north of Europe's largest (though now exposed) coral reef at Barns Ness.

Golfers have a large choice of courses, both parkland and links, from municipal to Championship, and with some very moderate fees.

August is the time for the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe Festival and the Tattoo. An easy drive of one hour takes you into the centre of Scotland's capital. You will find this a truly comfortable property in a magnificent location.

The area has many footpaths to explore including St. Cuthbert's Way and Scotlands National Trail. The Abbey Way path and the Pennine Way are also close by

The river Tweed and other fishing rivers pass through the Borders and fishing may be arranged

Many visitors come to the area to research their roots and the Border clans and Reiver families. Others come to find out about the birth of Christianity, St Cuthbert and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Whatever your reason for a visit our guests always enjoy the beautiful Cheviot hills and the coastlines of Berwickshire and Northumberland

About The Owner

Christine and John have been involved in tourism in Scotland for 30 years, first as successful hotel owners (specialising in golf holidays) and then owning pubs including the little Halfway House in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town which was Scotland's champion pub 2005/6 and Edinburgh champion pub 2009. Now retired from that busy business, they have set up Border Holiday Homes, a little group of cottages and apartments dedicated to couples (some, like this one, also welcoming a dog) which give visitors the chance to explore the beautiful, dramatic, rugged and romantic country that is both sides of the Anglo-Scottish Border. Our two apartments in Berwick-upon-Tweed are suitable for the less mobile

Why The Owner chose Scottish Borders

We first saw Morebattle when we were students and fell in love with each other and the place. Over 40 years later we had the chance to buy Benfield and love staying there ourselves and getting into the beautiful Bowmont Valley, up past the Romany Kings Palace and just enjoying the peace of this wonderful area and this delightful cottage.

What makes this cottage unique

We've put some of our favourite pictures into Benfield so, when we are in the cottage, we enjoy them and we love the stairs! The bedroom and the bathroom are special, too - very comfy. The people in the village could not be friendlier or more welcoming. The chance to go to the neighbouring villages of Kirk and Town Yetholm is also very special - great inns and good company.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We liked this cottage as much as your other. Great location and Mollie(the dog) loved it. The cottage was well fitted and very comfortable. We will be back

Charming and friendly in a pretty village

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in early September 2010 for four days. We loved the location near the abbeys and in very pretty pastoral setting. The cottage had everything we needed, and the owners were super.

It's a good place near walking trails, castles, and not too far from the east coast and St. Abbs, a great hike along a rocky shore. The village is quiet and natives friendly. We do recommend this stay in Benfield.

Owner's Response: It's a great pleasure to have lovely guests, especially when they leave great reviews afterwards because then we know we're getting it right! We think Benfield, the village and its surroundings are beautiful but then we've been going there for over forty years.

Though long-distance footpaths pass the door of the cottage, many people visit either to visit the thousand year old Cistercian abbeys in the area, or explore their Scottish roots or just to enjoy the fabulous scenery and relax in one of this un-spoilt village on the edge of the remote Cheviot Hills. There are many connections to the Border 'Reivers' in the area (cross border raiders and bandits) and it is a good base if you want to undertake family or ancestor research
