Terlingua House (Big Bend Area's Original Guesthouse)

Overview

About the property

Lodge, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Terlingua House is located in the heart of the desert mountain country of West Texas. For the price of a nice single hotel room, this unique guesthouse is like having your own personal lodge for your trip. It is a three-bedroom, two-bath, adobe-style property with full kitchen; each located in a separate building. This unique layout enables you to socialize and dine together and retreat to the privacy of your own separate rooms for some solitude. It's almost like renting a small resort rather than just a vacation home or hotel room.

Although most come here to get away from it all, Terlingua House has all the comforts of home:

* Fully stocked kitchen with full sized fridge, stove/oven (apartment sized), microwave, dishwasher and all the dishes, utensils and cooking requirements one would need.

* Washers/dryers - exploring and adventure means you may need to do laundry

* Wireless Internet, cable TV (including big screen TV) - when you want to plug back in to the real world

* An upper level deck for mountain viewing and star gazing

* A beautiful, covered lower courtyard connecting two buildings; complete with 2 grills for cooking and dining outside

* An outdoor sitting area with fire pit (bring your own wood).

Stroll up the hill on the property and view the changing colors of the Chisos Mountains during the spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Bedroom layout:

Big Bend Room - Queen and Futon with its own bathroom

Fairfax Room - Queen and two full beds

Studio - Two Full Beds

Fairfax and Studio share a bathroom

We find this property most comfortable for 6 people - 3 bedrooms, 3 couples. We have arranged the bedding so that we can accommodate up to 12 in beds and 16 if you count the futon and day beds in the kitchen. Note that there is a price increase beginning at 7 or more guests age 10 or over.

Value - For two guests this entire property is about the price of a nice hotel room in the city, if you are not on a strictly tight budget, you will be happy you are here. Dining out is expensive in the area, If you make use of the kitchen at all, you will likely find this makes up the difference. For four or more people you will find this is by far the best value in the area. You are on 15 acres, great views, TV, Internet, fire pit, great upstairs deck, city water, direct access to TX 170 highway. You are NOT confined between the tents, trailers or pre-fab "cabins" that have popped up in the years since we began this project. As they say, location is everything - we have a great location, all the amenities and reasonable pricing.

Terlingua House is located two miles west of Terlingua, Texas between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. This safe and secure 15 acre, semi-secluded property with easy access, has a grand view of the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park while still being only minutes away from restaurants and local river rafting, hiking, biking and jeep tour outfitters. Terlingua Ghost town is a couple minutes drive down the road. There's even a pizza place at the bottom of the road - an easy walk for dinner and drinks.

If you like Big Bend I am confident you will like Terlingua House. We strive to keep it cool, fun, functional and clean. After 14+ years we have many repeat customers, many recommendations and about once a year - a whiner! If you have never been to Big Bend, it is truly one of the most unique and fascinating areas in Texas, and the country for that matter - hence the national and state parks. It is also one of the most vast and remote areas in the country. It is - an adventure. Whether you stay with us or one of the other lodging accommodations in the area, go with the understanding that you will be, and we are working in, an area that teeters between the 21st century and the 19th century. This is part of the fun, part of the adventure - part of the allure of Big Bend.

We would love to have you stay at Terlingua House. If you would like to rent please do the following in this order: (1) Check the calendar here on VRBO for availability during the time you want to go, (note that VRBO has "available for check in dates", ignore that, if your days are not marked as reserved, call us, we will work with you) after you have found available dates then; (2) Go to our website (TerlinguaHouse dot com) and fill out the rental agreement form and finally; (3) Monday through Friday 8AM - 5PM please call the office at 325-473-4400 with a MC or Visa handy to pay and confirm your reservation. Note that the 25% deposit is non-refundable but can be used at a later date, the 75% balance is due and payable 10 days prior to your arrival.

** IMPORTANT NOTE: VRBO Instant quote does not calculate our specials correctly. A 'rent 2 get 3rd free' special means you have to rent two nights to get the third free. Unfortunately VRBO calculator will average the price across all nights and it results in a discrepancy. For a true quote please contact us directly. Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience. The same applies for 'rent 2 get 2 free'. Also note that there is an additional per person charge for groups over 6.

Thank you for considering Terlingua House for your Big Bend trip.

About Cara or Bud

Bud Johnson and Friends are the owners of Terlingua House.

Bud lives on a ranch just outside of Bronte, Texas (between San Angelo and Abilene). He is a geologist by trade and also dabbles as an entrepreneur.

Cara or Bud purchased this house in 2003

Why Cara or Bud chose Texas

I fell in love with the area and then the property back in the 80's and it has been a labor of love to get it to the high standard that it is today. There's something almost magical or spiritual when you watch the sunrise and sunset from here - not to mention the star gazing on a clear night. There's nothing like it. Terlingua House is a deluxe property on 15 acres with spectacular views, easy access, all the amenities and plenty of water. Both water and access can be an issue in the area. It's the perfect place to get away from it all and experience an amazing part of Texas that many don't even know exist. It's just minutes from shopping, dining and tour outfitters and easy access for day trips. Plus, you're fully connected to the outside world here with Internet and satellite TV.

What makes this house unique

Unique, lodge-like adobe style buildings house 3 separate sleeping quarters and kitchen/dining area. It's like renting a lodge or small resort for the same price as a decent hotel room. This allows you to socialize, dine and entertain as a group with the added benefit of retreating to your own space for some quiet time. Just minutes from shopping and dining, it's a perfect place to get away from it all but still be connected with wireless Internet, satellite TV other comforts of home. The sunsets/sunrises and star gazing are spectacular from this property.

Wonderfully unique house in the perfect location for both Big Bend National & State Parks

  • 5 of 5

The house is perfect, very quiet location. Their is lots of privacy between each bedroom as well given its unique three building arrangement. The kitchen was a great place to meet and plan the adventures for the day. The overall location within Terilinqua is perfect as well, situated centrally for both the National and State parks...with both entrances near by (go right for Big Bend national park, left for the State Park!!!). The roof balcony was a lot of fun viewing the lunar rise each night in the dark sky...being able to see the Jupiter moons with the small provided telescope was an added bonus! The kitchen, rooms, bathrooms and property were well stocked, clean, and comfortable! Having our "own" restaurant (Long Draw Pizza) walking distance was great after long days of adventures, seeing and doing all there is to do in the area...the owner of Long Draw Pizza is real nice and provided a real personal/local touch to the vacation. My family (w/ 4-kids all under age of 12) and I really enjoyed this vacation! We may never stay in a "normal" hotel again!

DEsert Getaway

  • 3 of 5

Bud, The place was great. There was no problem going into

BigBend from the location. We did a little maintenance while we were there. We fixed the hinge on the door to the kitchen hangout room and the door knob to the extra bedroom. The place was comfortable. There were no hairdryers in the bathroom, You should look at the stucco sometime, it needs some tlc. Please note I am an old carpenter and my friend is a builder. These are all observations. We would go back if we get the chance.

Big Bend home base

  • 5 of 5

We loved Terlingua House. The location is ideal in proximity to the Ghost town as well as the park entrance. There are 4 separate buildings, 3 bedroom buildings and 1 kitchen/living space. The kitchen was small but functional and has everything you need (including a mixer and a blender). We spent most of our time gathered in the courtyard area and also enjoyed the fire pit for some star gazing in the evening. The beds were very comfortable. The home is directly off of the road but sits on a hill so there is minimal road noise. The pizza place is located at the bottom of the driveway/ We will definitely rent again on our next trip to Big Bend.

Very comfortable but realize it isn't like a typical hotel

  • 4 of 5

Overall, my family enjoyed staying at Terlingua house. It was a very comfortable stay, very quiet, and it was nice to be near amenities (grocery stores and restaurants in Terlingua). It has a full kitchen, a nice patio, and 2 barbecue grills. It is about a 20 minute drive to the Big Bend entrance and 40 minutes total to the first Big Bend visitor center. They were easy drives. All the rooms had A/C systems that worked well. The star gazing was amazing as it is so dark there. There is ample space for a large group to be very comfortable. There are enough beds to comfortably sleep 14 people but I don't know how many the owners allow at one time. The kitchen is well equipped and the barbecue grills work well. We enjoyed making campfires at night in the firepit and making smores.

Before you book, just realize this isn't a hotel. It is more like glamorous camping than a hotel. The three bedrooms, kitchen, living room, and second bathroom are all separate buildings and there are no hallways connecting them. So realize that there will be dust and bugs as you walk room to room. Also, it is very dark at night so walking between the rooms at night is more difficult. Overall, the rooms are well sealed, but you will still see an occasional bug or large spider in them. NONE of the bugs bothered us at all but, again, its better that you know what to expect. The shared second bathroom isn't sealed as well and there are more bugs in there (moths, grub worms, grasshoppers, and some spiders). Again, none of these bugs bothered us. I recommend this place as long as you accept what I mentioned above. I would stay here again. Cara has excellent communication if you have any questions. Thanks!

Desert Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This was my 2nd time staying at Terlingua House. It is the perfect retreat. You can see bighorn sheep up in the canyon in the morning, hear coyotes, look at stars and be in a comfortable setting where you can cook, do laundry after a day of hiking or adventuring in Big Bend and are 2 minutes drive or a short walk to the ghost town. Thanks so much. We love love love it here.
