Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cabin in Bisbee

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

The Sleepy Dog Guest House is a one bedroom, artist owned, restored miner's cabin perched high in the hills above Historic Old Bisbee. Sitting on an acre of land, it is incredibly private and quiet--with no neighbors and no noise-- yet we are close enough to town that it's an easy stroll to great restaurants, shopping, sight seeing and antiquing. The Sleepy Dog's memorable atmosphere is regionally eclectic and features folk and contemporary art. The 850sf house features a sitting area, dining room, bedroom, full, working kitchen and a bathroom with deep, claw foot bath tub. There are two porches, front and back, one with Adirondack rocking chairs. We supply simple makin's for breakfast (self catering) in the morning and also coffee, and teas. The pantry is also stocked with basic spices. You will find a fully equipped kitchen with stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, pots and pans, utensils, flatware and fabric napkins. We also use hand crafted goats milk soaps in the bath.

Our guests rave about the incredibly comfortable king sized bed, the well appointed linens, all cotton flannel in the winter and high thread count cotton in the summer, feather bedding and the clawfoot bath tub--great for a long, hot soak--and the stunning views of town and the Mexican mountains in the distance. The views from the house are without a doubt the best that Bisbee has to offer. Of course those views mean stairs to get to the front door and Bisbee is famous for stairs. Every October we celebrate them with the Bisbee 1000 Stair Climb when literally thousands of people descend upon town to climb up and down the hills and experience our unique setting. We also have our own private viewing point out the back gate and up a short trail where you can enjoy coffee in the morning or cocktails in the evening and watch the town unfold in front of you. It's a fun little spot unique to the Sleepy Dog. Our guests are welcome to use all of the sitting areas, porches, both front and back. And if one is so inclined there are hiking trails available literally out both the front and back doors. The overall setting is welcoming and private and is a convenient walk to Old Bisbee.

The Sleepy Dog is a perfect place to use as a starting point for tours of Southeastern Arizona. Bisbee itself has enough to keep a traveler occupied but we are close to the Mexican Border, Karchner Caverns State Park, Cochise Stronghold, the Wonderland of Rocks and historic Tombstone.

The Sleepy Dog is a guest house where we try to take a guest away from the stresses, aggravation, noise and light pollution and everything else that makes a city a city. The real basic things, like sitting on a porch in a rocking chair with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, watching clouds move across the sky (a stunning venue for summer monsoons!), or soaking in a deep clawfoot tub are what we offer. The only connection we have to the 'real world' is WiFi. We do have a small television and a fabulous collection of movies which can be found in many drawers throughout the house.

The Sleepy Dog is the quintessential Bisbee lodging experience with hiking right out side the front door, amazing star gazing because of the clean, high altitude air, bird watching, and, of course, the house itself. The Sleepy Dog was built about a hundred years ago and reclaimed in the early 1990s but the feel of the house has been left untoched by stainless steel or granite counter tops! We are offering Bisbee visitors a genuinely quirky, colorful and unique place to stay that says Bisbee like no other guest house in town.

This little enclave of free thinkers and artists is also a very, very friendly Dog Town and so is the Sleepy Dog. We love having you and your well behaved pets stay with us.

The bird watching is also superb! Guests have seen over 30 species of birds ranging from sandhill cranes (10 miles away at their winter home), woodpeckers, roadrunners, goldfinches, vermillion flycatchers, lazlu buntings, towhees, juncos, owls, bluebirds to violet crowned, lucifer and ruby throated hummingbirds. There is a family of curved bill thrashers nesting in the chollo cactus next door.

Bisbee is a quirky little town and so is the Sleepy Dog--very colorful, filled with original art, kitschy collections and a unique blend of comfort, one of a kind decor, and amenities that bring our guests back time and time again. So, if you're looking for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation and an escape from reality for a bit there's only one place to stay, and that's the Sleepy Dog!

Why Nancy Parana chose Arizona

The Sleepy Dog Guest House has a fantastic location in Bisbee--it's on the edge of town yet close enough where a car is not necessary. The house's orientation to the sun means warm, sunny days in the winter which is a real plus for snow birds visiting the area. The layout of the house is convenient and comfortable, small enough to be cozy yet large enough not to feel cramped, and the two porches add great el fresco opportunities.

What makes this cabin unique

Waking up to the sound of birds, the morning sunshine, the view of town, the comfort of an old house, the clawfoot tub, and the rockers on the porch are the best things about the Sleepy Dog. There's also a private little table and chair arrangement on our special viewing point which is a one minute walk out the back gate.

Perfect Bisbee experience

  • 5 of 5

Bisbee is unique, funky, cool, and fun. The house was just right for my wife, daughter, and dogs. We had a great time, and Jenn was available throughout, though we didn't need a thing!

Location, views and comfort made The Sleepy Dog a perfect choice for our week in Bisbee

  • 5 of 5

The Sleepy Dog is a happy reflection of quirky Bisbee. The town is nestled at the bottom of a mountain basin, and The Sleepy Dog is one of many colorful homes that cling to the basin's side. We had a rental car to tour the area, but loved not having to use it within Old Bisbee. From The Sleepy Dog, it was just a 5-minute walk down to town, and for us, about a 10-minute walk to return up the town's stairs and sloping streets. While very close to the main streets, the location provides a quiet respite from bustling breweries and restaurants, with beautiful views of the town below, and a spectacular show of stars at night. Additional features of the house: sun-filled rooms with fun decor, a very comfortable mattress with quality bedding, lots of movie videos provided (we didn't miss cable TV), the friendly welcoming committee in the form of an outdoor cat, and our fabulous host, Jennifer. We would not hesitate to stay here again on our next visit to Bisbee.

month-long stay at Sleepy Dog

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the Sleepy Dog guest house for a month in January/February 2015. Overall, we had a good experience, and the house is funky and fun for what it best is - an authentic Bisbee retreat. The location and views are exceptional (we enjoyed the 50 steps leading up to the house), the bed was exceptionally comfy, and the heaters worked well to keep the whole house comfortable on below-freezing nights. The property manager was quick to address all questions and concerns we had during our stay. We’d recommend this place highly for a short-term stay, especially if you want to experience staying in what feels like ‘authentic Bisbee.’ For longer stays, know that the shower attachment onto the clawfoot bathtub is unwieldy, you’ll have to air-dry laundry, there is no cable/dish on the TV, and the kitchen pots/pans for baking are basic (line pans with nonstick tinfoil). Closet space is very limited.

Exceeded my expectations.

  • 5 of 5

I fell in love with Bisbee, AZ several years ago. I've stayed in several different places, all established hotels or bed and breakfasts. They were all wonderful but this was the best. Imagine having a cozy place to yourself with the most fantastic view morning, noon and night. I loved Tad's eclectic collections and some of her art is on display. She is the most laid back and trusting owner. I would absolutely stay here again.

Great weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in Bisbee at The Sleepy Dog Guest House. Tad, the owner, is a gracious host who made sure we were comfortable. The property is lovely (very fun decor) and cozy and has a beautiful view of the town and the surrounding mountains from the living room and the backyard deck. Highly recommend The Sleepy Dog for a romantic weekend getaway!

Loved this guest house

My Dog Tonka and I enjoyed this guest house some years back. Perfect little get-away for us. Although Tonka can no longer 'do stairs'.... I hope to return once day.

The mines that employed thousands of people in Bisbee closed their doors in the 1970s and many people had to leave town to find work elsewhere, so houses were abandoned, which made it a prime place for artists and other like minded free thinkers to gravitate towards. Throughout the years the houses have been reclaimed~just like the Sleepy Dog~but there are ruins of stairways and home sites and rock walls and rubble all across town. These things make Bisbee a photographer's paradise and a hiker's dream as there are staircases to climb and old mule trails to follow.

Incredible bird watching is also right outside the Sleepy Dog door. More than 30 species of birds including Mexican Spotted Owls, Great Horned Owels, six types of hummingbirds, Red Cardinals, Vermillion Flycatchers, Lazlu Bunting, Towhees, Mockingvirds, Solitaires, Wrens and Finches have been seen either at the Sleepy Dog itself or with a short day trip of the house.

Bisbee is a walking town, and a people town and a dog town. It's tiny, narrow and sometimes (more often than not) one way streets almost beg a visitor to park their cars and spend their vacation on foot. Although there's lots to see and do close by~Historic Tombstone, Karchner Caverns State Park, the Slaughter Ranch, Cochise Stronghold, the Wonderland of Rocks and Douglas, Arizona just to name a few. But the best thing to do in Bisbee is to relax, rewind, enjoy the quiet, the stars and the amazing fresh air.
