Want to know more about the history or our area?

Catskill Stream is snuggled into an area so rich in history, where legend begat fact, that the neighborhood adds another layer of wonder to an already stunning setting.

It was this immediate area of Palenville that Washington Irving borrowed in 1819 for the setting for the epic slumber and awakening of "Rip Van Winkle," drawing the then-young country's attention to the area. A few years later, the first of the pioneering artists of what became known as the Hudson River School of painting were pulled here, too.

Thomas Cole, Kaaterskill

Thomas Cole, The Falls of the Kaaterskill, 1826

The young Thomas Cole first visited here in 1825, to sketch nearby Kaaterskill Falls and other spots. The paintings he made from those sketches moved many other artists to flock to the area to try to capture it's awe-inspiring beauty, not only on canvas but also in poetry and prose.

Their glorious works, widely reproduced in the major periodicals of the day, attracted so many visitors that they in turn spurred the popularity of grand mountaintop hotels, which became favored destinations for all the giants of the 19th and early 20th century.

The famed Catskill Mountain House, in 1823 the first resort in America, was as legendary in its time as any playground of the famous and powerful today. The Mountain House, and the others that followed, like the Hotel Kaaterskill and the Laurel House, attracted Twain, Sherman, Presidents Arthur and Grant, along with nobility and notables from all over the world.

This is the real Catskill Mountains, not the vacation areas in the foothills to the southeast that long ago misappropriated the name. The justly famed Kaaterskill Falls, the tallest in New York State, rendered and made famous by all the major Hudson River School artists, is no more than four miles up the road!

The Mountain House, Hotel Kaaterskill and the Laurel House, widely-famed landmarks in their day, are all gone now. The depression of the 1930's, fire, and the march of time eventually brought their reign to the end, and the once imposing structures demolished. But the scenery is now even more sublime since the area has reverted to its natural state, and manmade structures no longer interfere.

"Kindred Spirits" (Cole & Bryant) by Asher Durand

"Kindred Spirits" (Cole & Bryant) by Asher Durand

Asher Durand, who bought one of Thomas Cole's original three paintings of the region, painted this tribute to his friends William Cullen Bryant and Cole after the latter's passing. It shows his interpretation of a spot in the Kaaterskill Clove, borrowing various features from different locations. It is regarded as a defining work of the Hudson River School.

About Jeff and Lea Boyer

We've lived in the Catskills for almost 20 years and love the natural beauty of this region. He owns a family entertainment production company she is a Sustainability Coordinator. We enjoy the adventure of traveling and meeting new people. We love to swim, hike, cook, and ride our bikes, Kaaterskill Clove and Platt Clove being some of our favorite rides. We step out the front door and am 2 minutes from these scenic mountain roads. Lea bakes award winning goodies like cakes and pies and muffins. (she loves to share them with our guests!)

Jeff and Lea Boyer purchased this house in 2009

Why Jeff and Lea Boyer chose Catskills

In all the years we've lived in the Catskills we've never seen anywhere as breathtakingly beautiful as Palenville. We walk out of our door and can swim in the stream, 4 blocks down a country lane is a trail head that leads up an incredible mountain. A few weeks ago we hiked up and were looking down on clouds and across to the Hudson and it was magnificent. The beauty is why we love Palenville.

What makes this house unique

This home is so convenient! Walk to all you need! It's easy to get to Woodstock, Hunter, Saugerties, Catskill, Hudson. We love to listen to the sound of the stream at night. The gardens are beautiful. It's great to grill and relax in the hammock in the back yard.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It was lovely staying at the charming home of Jeff and Lea for a weekend wedding in their area. We met Jeff on the first night, who was especially warm and welcoming. They had coffee, tea, fresh fruit, egg, cream, jam and bread waiting for us for a hearty breakfast. And as is mentioned in the description, the division has a separate entrance from the home so it really felt like you were tucked away for great privacy. The stream did indeed lull you to sleep at night and we said to ourselves more than once, "This is God's Country". Gorgeous. I would definitely go back!

Clean and cozy spot with excellent access to parks and town

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for father's Day weekend and had a great time. Kaaterskill creek and falls are within a short walk. Hunter mountain and the park are a short drive as is the dining of Saugerties, Woodstock and Catskill. This 2nd floor apartment has all the kitchen and bathing necessities and is furnished comfortably. A great value. Lea, Jeff and their son Will were very accommodating.

Great place, friendly and helpful hosts

  • 5 of 5

Accommodations were cute as can be and it was lovely to have coffee, fruit there on arrival and pastries next day! Right across from a lovely little stream with a swimming hole right there. Kids enjoyed jumping off a little ledge into the water, which was, let's say, refreshing! It was early June., with water coming down from the mountains.

We'll be back!

Nice place in a nice location

  • 4 of 5

Apartment was in a really nice spot. No more than 15-20 mins to either north/south lake (hiking, swimming, boating, fishing) or Woodstock. Kaaterskill falls also right up the street. Apartment was clean and comfortable and Lea was very accommodating......Plenty of tips on where to go. We spent most of our time on the lake or in the local swimming holes. Overall, we had a great time.

We are on the most beautiful stream in the Catskills. On the Kaaterskill Clove near the legendary Kaaterskill Falls. (Highest falls in New York). You'll recognize views from masters paintings and will love the local flavor.

It's a Hamlet, sleepy, neighborly, tiny. Lots of great amenities, a world class down home bistro who creates the most amazing baked goodies, salads, creative soups and grilled treats, 2 awesome restaurants (One of which has creekside dining one has rocking seasonal music, an upscale wine store, library, post office, gas station. All this and an amazing view of the stars. The Milky-way is closer here, it's a wonder you'll want to catch.

Enjoy a concert at the historic Maverick or live theater at the Woodstock Playhouse. The Woodstock Film Festival, held each October, is a movie lovers delight and the Woodstock Writers Festival is an intellectual odyssey .

Summer is the time for H.I.T.S., a major equestrian event located in Saugerties, just minutes away. Saugerties also provides easy access to the Hudson River for boating and sailing. The village itself is home to renowned pubs, restaurants and a variety of shops, including unique antique stores where you'll hunt for potential treasures. Saugerties hosts many festivals and events like the Garlic Festival and the Jazz Festival. There are numerous Farmers Market is open all year round.

Hunter Mountain (12 minutes), provides a wide range of winter and summer activities. Hunter is and Windham are the major ski resorts (ours is a year-round vacation rental). The Catskill Mountain Foundation offers classes in the arts and many craft and culinary events, 23Arts, The Catskill Jazz Factory and The Kindred Spirits Jazz Thursdays are some of the culture available just minutes from the door. Got a sweet tooth? We're just 5 minutes from Twin Peaks Doughnuts where you'll find custom made to order doughnut sliders served along side of healthy local salads and eggs that you can eat while playing pool or perusing antiques (Pool table available at breakfast). Nature lovers will appreciate the access to hiking and fishing. Trout fishing is less than a block from the house and the Kaaterskill Clove trail heads are within 3 blocks.

We are 2 blocks from the bus stop that goes to New York City. It's also an amazing vacation on the way to vacation to take the Amtrak to Hudson New York and rent a car or take a cab here. (Highly recommend seeing the Hudson River this way!)

We're a green vacation rental. All of our cleaning solutions exceed Green Seal standards, all paint is zero-VOC, we recycle, grow organically and HEPA vacuum meticulously. We are happy to stock anything special you may want.
