LOCATION: Cedar Key, Florida. North central Florida USA (1 hour from Gainesville, 2 hours from Jacksonville, 2 hours from Tampa)
Accommodations: Waterfront home, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths (Sleeps 7)
The PAINTED SKY LODGE is a beautiful single family home situated on a spit of land that enjoys both Gulf of Mexico and bayou waterfront views located in old Florida Cedar Key. As appropriately named, you will always be able to observe the ever changing and majestic painted skies beginning with each sunrise and ending at sunset. Historical Cedar Key, a collection of small islands, is an unspoiled fishing, clamming, and oyster harvesting village that offers visitors and residents alike a lifestyle that is all about today—leaving yesterdays behind and not worried about what tomorrow will bring. Pull off your shoes, wiggle your toes, prop your feet up, and let that “other life” just ooze away.
The PAINTED SKY LODGE is a unique home that offers its guests and residents comfortable and spacious bedrooms plus open living areas. The walk-around screened porch completely surrounds the house. Each bedroom offers water views in addition to a private door that opens on to the porch. The kitchen is fully equipped with beautiful granite counter tops, and spacious cabinets while overlooking the marsh and bayou. An open bar allows easy transfer of food and beverages to the dining table. The dining table and kitchen bar can sit 8 guests comfortably with more if there need be a squeeze. The living room, consisting of Mission furniture, fireplace and satellite TV make this area “oh” so comfortable. In addition, for the adventurous, you may climb the living room spiral staircase to the widow’s peak located atop the roof for spectacular 360 degree views of the islands, marshes, bayous, and Gulf of Mexico.
The PAINTED SKY LODGE offers many conveniences that all guests may enjoy. An ELEVATOR is available in addition to two (2) sets of staircases. A 2-seat GOLF CART (Mr. Blue) is also available as part of the rental package but limited to those guests that are 21 years of age with a valid drivers license. You’ll have access to all of Cedar Key’s restaurants, shops, and sights without having to worry about where you’ll park your car. The laundry room has full size clothes washer & dryer along with sink and folding areas. There are two (2) very spacious car garages with remote controlled doors. There is a pet kennel in the garage as well as a gated and fenced dog run besides the house. The boat and dock facility has sitting benches, fish-cleaning table, and a floating dock to launch your kayak or fish and crab from. (Boats can be launched from the City Marina.) If you fly your own airplane, you can land at the Cedar Key airport, and walk directly to the house within minutes.

2015 REFLECTIONS & INSIGHTS--The winter of 2014-2105 resulted in one of the greatest redfish bites in recent Cedar Key history. It seemed that everyone fishing for reds caught their allocated limit on each trip. Most of the fish were caught in the creeks using a variety of baits including shrimp, mud minnows, and cut mullet. There was some top water plug action on the flats on sunny day high tide afternoons. With winter now coming to a close, the reds will be moving out to the islands, oyster bars, & shallow water rocky bottom. And with the upcoming warm weather, the trout will return to the flats, with tarpon and cobia touring thru the area. This winter we have had a great time fishing with Captains Pat & Gene Babbitt of Waccassa Bay Airboat Charters. This husband & wife team each have their own 16 foot airboat and know how to catch fish. Fishing in an airboat is an extra bonus and too much fun. In addition to airboat fishing there are other captains for flats, and off-shore fishing available in Cedar Key.
We have made a few changes during the winter. "Ole Squeaky" the golf cart has been put out to pasture and replace with "Mr. Blue". "Mr. Blue" has been a nice upgrade. In addition, we have some new furniture in the bedrooms, new dining table chairs, and plenty of lounges, & chairs for the porches.
Bugs--Cedar Key is an inland community that is surrounded by tidal basins, mud banks, and grass marshes. All of Cedar Key has bugs! When there is lots of rain, the mosquitoes are prevalent especially in the early mornings and at dusk. The critters that are the worst are the 'no-see'ums'. These insects are smaller than the head of a pin but have the ability to torment any and all warm blooded mammals. Like the mosquitoes they are especially bad in the early morning hours and evenings. The solution for both pests is mosquito repellant with deet and/or 'skin so soft' both of which are readily available in most drug stores, groceries, etc.
This year was my 5th stay at The Painted Sky Lodge, and I plan on returning. My wife and I seem to spend as much time on the wrap-around screened porch as we do inside the house. The ebb and flow of the tides bring groups of Ibis, Egrets, Wood Storks, Roseate Spoonbills, pelicans, kingfishers, eagles and osprey. We make use of the dock to launch our kayaks along with the fish cleaning station to clean our catch. The elevator is much appreciated for loading luggage and groceries, and some of our friends who would have trouble getting up and down the stairs. The kitchen is well appointed with a great set of pots and pans, however the electric stove always takes me awhile to get used to. I'm a gas stove cook at home.
The living room is comfortable, with lots of seating and the large dining table is handy if you have a large family or group of friends for dinner. The bathrooms are clean and convenient--the showers have good pressure and the water gets hot and lasts through 3 or 4 showers in a row. The golf cart is a great way to go downtown or to the store, we often don't touch the car for a week or more. The manager and owner are very responsive--the front screen on the screen door was torn, and it was repaired the same day we called it in! We brought our bikes and rode the island. We also enjoyed walking to dock street to get a beer and a bowl of clams or dinner at Steamers. Bring your binoculars, you'll be seeing a lot of birds. The in-house library is a feature worth checking also--many interesting books for reading on the porch. Be sure to get the local clams and oysters, they are delicious! If you are looking for a golf or beach vacation, you will probably be disappointed. If you are looking to relax, have a fun group getaway, spend time with family, or take to time to walk, kayak, bike, and eat great fresh seafood, Cedar Key is the place.
Enjoyed the stay. The deck is very relaxing. Took a couple of naps in the hammocks. One of our party even slept in one over night. Great view from the crows nest. Kitchen was stocked with everything but the food. Very clean and comfortable over all.
We loved the home! Our children, 10 and 8, had a blast fishing, kayaking, looking out the widows-peak windows up top, and being chauffeured on the golf cart! The weather was perfect all week and the elevator came in very handy when un-packing our luggage and groceries that we brought with us!
We felt very 'at home' here and enjoyed the beautiful sun-rises and sun-sets on the porch.
We cooked lunch and dinner home a few nights and went down town the other days.
We loved the huge wrap-around porch with a variety of chairs, hammocks and a swing.
I had to work a little everyday, so the wifi was a very big help!
Our stay was just wonderful and very relaxing!
We stayed August 8-11. It's a lovely home, great piece of property. We loved catching crabs right off the deck for our dinner! The house is a lot of fun, the kids really enjoyed the elevator and the golf cart. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped. Plenty of fresh linens were available. Absolutely adored lounging on the deck and listening to the birds and the most beautiful wind chimes. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars was that most of the dining room chairs were falling apart, and one actually broke while my husband was sitting on it. Luckily, there were plenty of folding chairs for us to use.
The home is totally functional for any age - regardless of the weather. Drive into the
garage, never get wet/out in the cold, go up the stairs or elevator (great for seniors).
Inside very clean and comfortable. Plenty of room to relax outside on the porch (bring several ThermaCells for the porch/yard area (you're in Florida, you will always have bugs!). The circular fireplace was so nice. The main bonus (besides the view), was "squeaky" the golf cart - very relaxing. Also, Mary is a jewel - extremely polite and so
The Painted Sky Lodge was much more than we expected. Totally self contained, private & the BEST thing was it was so quiet. Even the landing planes nearby seemed tame with their take offs and landings. The 360 degree view was beautiful, and the golf cart made it easy to pick up groceries as needed at one of the 3 small stores in town. Hope to return soon....Thank you!
fishing - flats (redfish, trout, tarpon, snook, black drum, cobia, sharks) and offshore (grouper, snapper, mackerel), crabbing, birding, private air strip, airplane tours, horse & buggy rides, destination day trips
