Wonderful contemporary passive solar home built in 1980 and designed by an incredible architect here on Martha's Vineyard who was a protege of the iconic 20th century architect, Louis Kahn. This house has 3 floors of fun to discover and explore. There are great places to gather in the house and plenty of places to find peace and solace. The living room has a 42 inch flat screen Sony TV and a Blue Ray and DVD player. Bring your Roku and access your Netflix or Hulu accounts.
There are a total of 4+ bedrooms and 2 baths, one on the 2nd floor and one on the 3rd floor. Bruce and his family loved it!
My wife and I were talking again today about our wonderful stay at your home in Vineyard Haven last August. The home is unique, truly the perfect place to stay while visiting Martha's Vineyard. We so enjoyed being within walking distance of downtown and Owen Park Beach that became our favorite beach on the island -- and we visited lots of them. Our now 2 year old granddaughter Lilah still talks about the visit and always points out the toys that we bought there and wants to see slide shows and movies of our visit, pointing our your son Nathaniel every time. The Perception Sailing Trip was also a highlight of our visit, a ride no one should miss if they have the opportunity.
If we ever decide to stay on the Vineyard again, I'm sure your home will be at the top of our list of places to stay.
What Lisa Says:
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your home and absolutely loved the roof and watching the stars! The design of the home is fun, different and there was lots of sleeping space for everyone.
We have rented on the island for about 12 years now and it was nice to stay in an untraditional home; I loved the feeling of being in a boat! Walking to town and the beach in five minutes was great too.
We aren't sure of plans yet for next summer but will be in touch.
Lisa from summer 2008
Design Notes from the Architect:
This home gives renters a chance to experience a thoughtful Vineyard home that they never forget it. As a student of Louis Kahn at the University of Pennsylvania , James Weisman, the owner and designer of the Look Street House learned about the power of architecture to enhance a sense of wonder through creating places of well-being. This home is one of the most exceptional homes on Martha's Vineyard. It is a place of wonder that allows many people to have a quality time with variety and privacy and joy.
Note: Sadly James Weisman passed away while visiting one of his daughters in Philadelphia on March 1, 2015. His widow Laura is the owner and is still renting her home in summer to vacationers who appreciate this unique home.
Below is what Jamie had written on this site explaining his home and architecture.
"I am One of The Vineyard's insightful Architects, I studied with Louis I. Kahn, subject of the movie, My Architect. Kahn was one of the greats of 20th century architecture and I was in his Master's Class and recieved many awards, grants and medals during my time at the University of Pennsylvania School of Architecture.
I live with my family in this home in the wintertime and spend the summers when the house is rented living in the harbor on 'Perception', a 50 foot gaff rigged Herressoff Schooner. I row to work in my office adjacent to the Black Dog Tavern.
Marta Camargo purchased this house in 1980
Because it is unique, fascinating, loved by all, especially children who learn from its architecture; because it is quiet, but in town with an easy walk to the beach and a cup of coffee, the library and the playground, the harbor and the ferry.
I designed and built this house to be a passive solar home in 1980, before solar panels.
Being part of the year round community of Vineyard Haven gives you a unique ability to participate in a wonderful way with the Island. You can walk on tree shaded village sidewalks everywhere from beach to an ice cream cone or a cup of coffee or the library to an old fashioned movie theatre with one screen and popcorn. A playground is a few hundred feet away. The home is secluded with fields around the yard in back but just open the front gate in the picket fence, go down the steps and walk down to mainstreet and Owne Park Beach. There are buses nearby that go everywhere on the island and you have the option of just wandering in a magnificent New England town. Owners Speak: English, French, Portuguese
Thank you so much for letting us come and stay and enjoy your wonderful house! It was such a treat to get out of the urban jungle heat and relax in such a peaceful home. The Vineyard is such a special place to get to spend a week especially in such a convenient and fascinating place.
We had a very enjoyable time staying in this uniquely and lovingly designed, magically personable house. There were so many delightful and brilliant features to this house - it is truly one of a kind. The house was comfortable and roomy for our two families to work, lounge, read, and gather. The airy, light-filled solarium that soared from ground floor to the third floor - with balconies, a shower, eucalyptus, and fig trees - was enchanting; and we enjoyed the "widow's walk" view from the top of the house. We all agreed that the convenience of being able to walk to shops, ferry, beaches, restaurants in ten minutes was a huge plus. The process of rental was easy, accommodating, helpful, and welcoming. This was our fourth summer rental on MV and it was the best experience.
Our two families had a wonderful stay and enjoyed the house immensely. It is like no other place we've ever been and has a truly unique feel, yet also built with practicality in mind. The second floor "outdoor" shower in the solarium is great, as are the little details designed by Jamie who clearly had a love of sailing. Many nautical influences. Love that there are eucalypti trees growing in the solarium and the sun just pours in. Our only complaint is that there is no bathroom on the ground floor, but that wouldn't stop us from renting again. Under 10 minute walk to town, which made everything easier. We would recommend this home.
The most wonderful thing about this house is the rural feel, yet its in the middle of Vineyard Haven close to the Library, Main Street restaurants, entertainment and shopping. You couldn't have a better location. The house itself was interesting and clearly a labor of love by the architect. The kitchen was well designed and easy to cook in, there was a charcoal grill in the backyard along with tables and chairs. The house has three floors, the first has an open floor plan with LR, DR and Kitchen, The bedrooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floor. Each floor having a full bath. Our family was very comfortable here and amazed how cool the house was even without AC. The owner/architect told us that he keeps the house cool with the design which allows hot air to rise up and create cool breezes. We never needed to use the fans that were in each bedroom. The Weisman's were wonderful to deal with regarding our rental details. Our family plans to make our annual pilgrimage to the Vineyard to this house.
