General Description: A warm, comfortable, healthy GREEN home utilizing solar power but grid intertied with 270 degree vistas of mountain ranges, sitting above the trout-rich Madison River, in a ranch setting 40 miles from Yellowstone National Park (35 miles from Ennis) and with private access to 3 ½ miles of fishing on the Madison River.
The house has 4 bedrooms & 3 baths..
The kitchen contains top-of-the-line equipment including double Miele ovens with Magic Chef programming, a DCS gas cook-top, a silent Bosch dishwasher, a large refrigerator with freezer compartment, and a good size pantry. There is an outdoor Weber gas grill.
The house has a steam bath as well as a Jacuzzi bath.
The entertainment system includes a Blue Ray DVD player, a CD player, stereo speakers in several rooms, DISH large screen TV, and internet programming all operated by a single remote control. There is wireless internet access throughout the house with a broadband internet connection; fax machine/copier/scanner are provided.
The 3500 sq. ft. house was built during 2007-09 using renewable resources. It features thick adobe-style walls which, together with a highly insulated roof, keep the house at a constant comfortable temperature for a good part of the year. The house is designed to admit the winter sun and protect against the summer sun. Each room in the house features an interlocking, artistic interplay between wood and plaster. The plaster is a green product with a low carbon footprint (it absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere) and has high vapor exchange properties which tends to preclude water condensation. Straw bales are the insulation between the exterior and interior plaster.
There is a large outdoor porch sitting area with comfortable rocking chairs; a number of small sitting patios tucked strategically around the outside of the house with marvelous views; an outdoor picnic area; plenty of open space to enjoy; and complete privacy.
The house sits adjacent to an elk migration route (fall and spring) on land that may be considered part of the greater Yellowstone eco-system. The house is situated on a 2,000 acre ranch subdivision which has 1600 acres in conservation for recreation. The ranch resources include 3 ½ miles of riverfront on the Madison River, 2 trout ponds, a tributary of the Madison (Horse Creek), wildlife, and 12 plus miles of private roads for jogging and walking..
West Yellowstone is 40 miles; Ennis is 35 miles; and Bozeman is 90 miles. There are airports at West Yellowstone and Bozeman. The elevation of the house is 6000 ft.
Area activities include river & lake fishing, river floating (a boat launch just downriver from the house), hiking, sightseeing/ exploring, biking, horseback riding, camping, cross country skiing, and an enormous area of BLM Land & the Beaverhead National Forest abut the southern end of the ranch.
Smoking is not permitted inside the house. Pets are not allowed.

Our family shares a love of the out-of-doors - fishing, boating, hiking, biking, camping, and wildlife viewing. There are resources on the ranch where our grandchildren can fish in small trout ponds while the adults wade the Madison. We love to boat the Madison which is basically a 50 mile riffle in our area. There is a launch site just downriver from us. Also, we love seeing the elk migrate in large numbers right through our yard in the Fall and Spring. In the winter we cross-country ski on trails at the ranch or in the park at W. Yellowstone and then downhill ski either at Big Sky or Grand Targhee. We also go on field trips to Yellowstone National Park which is a great outdoor learning lab for all of us. Cross-country skiing in the Park is a favorite winter activity while biking in the Park in the Spring to see the animals calving is also very special.
Larry Holden purchased this house in 2008
We love southwestern Montana and the proximity of the property to Yellowstone National Park. We also enjoy having the resources of a 2000 acre ranch situated on the Madison River.
The house is extremely comfortable with all modern amenities but situated in part of the greater Yellowstone eco-system with wildlife viewing opportunities and lots of open space. The property offers private access to 3 1/2 miles of riverfront fishing on the Madison as well as on a tributary - Horse Creek - plus trout ponds.
What an amazing space to spend time with your family and enjoy nature. Our family loved every minute of this gorgeous house and it had something for every age. From fishing in the ponds for the little ones to jogging in the trails to relaxing and watching the sunset over the majestic mountains. The layout is very spacious and each room has gorgeous views but feels very private as well. The owner Larry is extremely helpful and responsive and the kitchen was stocked with pots, pans, and all the tools you could need to cook or BBQ. I hope we can return one day and spend at least another week if not longer enjoying this special place.
The VRBO photographs, while captivating, don't begin to capture the true nature of this Montana property. We were lucky enough to stay a month, and we never grew tired of the ever-changing vista to be had out of any window. Luxury blended with the rustic could be found in the smallest details. The house felt like a home immediately. Add in the wealth of wildlife, the blue ribbon fishing, and what you end up with is one of the most perfect spots on earth. The hosts couldn't have been nicer, as were the people at the ranch. Worth every penny--thanks Larry.
Our family has visited the Madison Valley at least annually for the past 25 years. During the recent 4 years, we have rented different houses and none compare to this one in offering truly customized and comfortable accommodations in a perfect setting. The kitchen and its accoutrements were first rate. The four bedrooms perfectly suited our extended family of 8 adults. This property was the first to have reliable cell reception as well as wifi throughout the house. The finish and sustainability of the construction gives extraordinary character and matches the remote and rugged environs. If one does not care to fish or explore, the house provides a most comfortable and comforting retreat unto itself.
This house was truly incredible. It has so many thoughtful touches to make it feel like a home away from home. The views at night are amazing and all you can hear outside is the wind blowing, it was so peaceful. The house overlooks the Madison river and our float trips each day went through the property. This property is extremely spacious and could easily accommodate a large family, but we went just as a couple and enjoyed having extra space as an escape from cramped city life. We absolutely can not wait to go back and enjoy the house and fishing once again!
My wife and I feel so lucky to have found this wonderful vacation home in an area that we have grown to love so much. Last year, 2011, we stayed for three weeks, and weren't ready to leave. So, this year we are staying for four weeks, and probably still won't be ready to leave. The setting high on a hill looking up and down the Madison River Valley, combined with the views of the surrounding mountains make this a great place for those who truly appreciate nature and the outdoors. The architecture and construction of the home gives a feeling of warmth and quality. The straw bale construction provides an even temperature throughout the house. The use of old recycled beams and lumber in the woodwork add a special touch of beauty rarely seen. Just getting up in the morning, having a cup of coffee and watching the day start is a super treat. We like the easy access to Yellowstone, stocking up in Ennis and enjoy an occasional trip to Bozeman for lunch, museums and great stores. If you are lucky enough to be there on the 4th of July, do not miss the rodeo in Ennis. If you enjoy trout fishing, we can't think of a better place than this. Walk to the Madison. Drive to the Gallatin, Ruby, Big Hole, Beaverhead and Jefferson. Charter a guide and fish from a drift boat. If you don't catch trophy trout, something is wrong. You couldn't find a better place for hiking. Whether you start just outside the front door or drive to Yellowstone, the trails are limitless. One warning - take bear spray! There are grizzly bears throughout the area. This home is an extremely romantic spot for a couple to get away and hide. But, if you want to surround yourself with family and friends, it is ideal for that too. The personal touch of the owners is evident throughout this home. Their pride is reflected in the way it is decorated and maintained.
This is a truly special place! Memories of waking up to the phenomenal panoramic views in this Montana oasis will remain with me forever. If you’re reading this you likely already know this area is a treasure. The Madison access and hiking right outside your door is the stuff of legends. Don’t miss hiking with a rod to the local lakes in mountains too. I almost missed out on that with the river and hiking right in the backyard but was glad I didn’t! The ranch home itself matches the beauty of the natural surroundings (no small complement!). It’s the kind of home that has its own life. Both the aesthetic detail (especially the woodwork) and eco consciousness of the ranch were huge adds to my enjoyment. Great set-up for cooking a meal and a huge plus that provisions are within easy reach. Can't say enough about this place!!!
