THE PERFECT RETREAT on Tisbury Great Pond. Our beautifully designed and maintained gem of a cabin offers one bedroom (plus convertible couch), full kitchen and bathroom, outdoor shower & more.
The cabin nestles peacefully in a secluded spot on Deep Bottom Cove, one of the finger coves of Tisbury Great Pond, in West Tisbury. The surroundings are unspoiled, with extraordinary views, birds, sunsets, vegetation, walks and boating. There are only a couple of houses in distant view.
The water is thirty seconds from the house where you can swim, sail, canoe and kayak. Sail or kayak to South Beach.
The cabin has gas lights as well as a electric lamps, but no TV or other gadgets. The kitchen is small but fully equipped. There is a full bathroom with tub plus an outdoor shower. There are electrical outlets throughout so you can plug in anything you bring.
The cabin gives you access to the 'quiet' side of the island, but is also a great base for visiting the wonderful galleries, restaurants, and stores in the island towns.
Off-season: It is particularly nice to visit the cabin in the off-season. The cabin is on the road that is the winter entrance to the Trustees of the Reservation Long Point Wildlife Refuge. Before June 15 and after September 15 the winter entrance gate to the refuge is open, so you can walk or drive out there in just a few minutes from the cabin. This gives you easier access to South Beach. The cabin is beautiful in any weather, and the huckleberry scrub is particularly lovely in spring and fall. The snug cabin has a wood stove for heat and warms up very nicely!
Reduced rates for longer rentals: If you are looking for a place for spring or fall, contact us to discuss reduced rates for a longer stay.
Also, our family owns a larger house next door with 4 bedrooms (Homeaway Property # 285157). Call or email to inquire about the 'camp'.
I own the cabin with my brother and sister. Although we live for most of the year in Columbus, Ohio, Atlanta and Boston respectively, we all and our families yearn for the few weeks during the year when we can be on the island. When we cannot be there, we rent to tenants--most of whom have been coming back year after year for practically decades.
Mia Lewis purchased this cabin in 1980
Our grandparents built this house in 1980 to be nearby our slightly larger place next door (Homeaway Property # 285157). FYI, although they are next door, you can't see one house from the other--total privacy. My grandfather started life as a civil engineer, but ended up as an architect. He designed the cabin with tons of love and care, for himself, and for his family. There are lots of unique touches he built in.
The cabin is particularly wonderful in the spring and fall, April-June and September October. First of all, the whole island is quieter and less crowded then. Secondly, the cabin is on the road that is the winter entrance to the Trustees of the Reservation Long Point Wildlife Refuge. Between September 15 and June 15 the winter entrance gate to the refuge is open, so you can walk or drive out there in just a few minutes from the cabin. This gives you easier access to South Beach. The cabin is beautiful in any weather, and the huckleberry scrub is particularly lovely in spring and fall. The snug cabin has a wood stove for heat and warms up very nicely!
In summer, the outdoor shower is not to be missed. The only creatures who will see you are the osprey.
We absolutely loved our stay at this cabin an had an incredible week. For us, this location struck the perfect balance of being remote and connected. We had no wifi--and liked it that way. We could walk down to a sandy spot by on the pond where our kids could swim and play and we could park beach chairs and read, or pile into the canoe for an adventure. It was also nice to drive into town once a day for dinners out, shopping, walks or visits to public beaches. The cabin is rustic, the view of the pond is amazing and peace surrounded by those woods is just perfect.
The location of this home is truly beautiful. It is peaceful, quiet, scenic, private. The cabin itself is just as described--comfortable, simple. The owners were terrific. I was able to enjoy kayaking, canoeing, sailing, swimming, birdwatching and hiking. I also did bicycling, although the sandy road made it challenging to start right at the house. All in all--it was a perfect place for a retreat.
The location is wonderful and private, and the cabin has everything necessary to prepare and cook meals. If you are looking for remote bare bones living this is it. For myself, I can do without TV, but lack of internet was tough. Also, visiting in late August I thought it would be cooler at night, but some nights were warm and I was thankful that I brought a fan. The paddle to the beach is a great workout and kayaks and canoes are provided. Mia is great and always responded immediately to answer any concerns. Otherwise had a great stay!
My husband and I wanted to plan a peaceful and relaxing week away in the off season and could not have found a more incredible place.
The reviews and pictures enticed us, but we had to pinch ourselves when we finally arrived. One of the reviews mentions that the pictures don't fully do it justice. And it's true! It's simply the most beautiful, secluded and charming cottage.
It has everything we need. We never minded having no TV, limited electrical lights and a wood-burning stove. It actually made for an incredibly relaxing and romantic vacation. Such a special thing to make dinner by candlelight (with a few small lamps), read books by the fire on a crisp autumn afternoon, and enjoy the island in the fall.
The wood-burning stove heated the house beautifully - we were cozy all day and night. The kayaks were so much fun - we took them out into Deep Bottom Cove and to Long Point Beach. The location is ideal, easy to get to all points on the Vineyard, but you almost feel like you have the entire island to yourself at the cottage. It was clean, the bed was comfy, the kitchen well-stocked. The view from the windows, deck (and shower!) were absolutely breathtaking.
We cannot recommend this cottage enough! We hope and plan to return every year.
Such a gem!!
"Let me begin by saying I am no stranger to the Vineyard-I’ve been coming here to visit family for over 55 years. But it wasn’t until the summer I rented the writer’s cabin that I once again found the Vineyard I remembered as a child. Gone were the noise, the traffic and the crowded beaches. For the nature lover, beachcomber, kayaker, sailor or someone who just likes to get away from it all, the cabin on the Cove has something for everyone. You’ll start to feel like you own a little piece of this “heaven on earth” as you return again and again.
The cabin has everything you need for your vacation-even includes use of kayaks, sailboats and a canoe. You'll find everything clean when you arrive and I hope you get to meet the owners as they'll make you feel right at home. I love the outside shower, the woodstove on a cool summer night, and the king size bed that’s as comfortable as a four star hotel.
I’ve recommended the cabin to several friends and now they too come back year after year. Visitor’s kids especially love the surf and are especially thrilled when the “cut’ is open between the pond and the ocean. For younger children there is even a fresh water pond right next to the ocean.
It's fun to go out to dinner once or twice but I prefer barbecuing swordfish on the grill provided and eating on the deck, watching the sunset over the cove. I also like to take in a concert and have seen some well-known performers each summer.
Animal life abounds on this peaceful salt-water pond. Bring your camera to photograph the osprey, swans and if you're very fortunate, you may even meet the sea otters in the cove as a friend of mine did early one morning.
When I walk in the door of the cabin, I shout out, “I’m home”! Enjoy your stay!
I've been renting this cabin every summer for the past ten years.
The location is perfect. Several miles down a dirt road, with no neighbors, on a private pond which opens up to the ocean, if you don't mind doing some rowing to get there. We make the kayak trip to the ocean one of our special day-long annual outings. Early morning pond swims as well as sundown swims are a daily ritual. There is no TV, thank goodness, and the cabin is very rustic with some electric lights but mostly gas lamps, and we wouldn't want it any other way. The newly built back deck which looks out onto the pond is our favorite place to eat meals and we sometimes even sleep out there. Last year while I was swimming one early morning, there wasn't a sound, and I was all alone, I looked up to find three otters climbing over themselves to watch me.
If you want to be in the Vineyard and not have to deal with any crowds, this is the place for you. If you want all of the luxuries -- TV, AC, internet access, washer dryer, etc. this is not where you want to be. I wouldn't ever go anywhere else. "
