The 1-bedroom Ocean View Apt. has 3 big picture windows facing the across-the-street beach with uninterrupted ocean views; the 1-bedroom Cottage sits behind it next to a blooming mountain jungle. Auntie began accepting guests in 1983 and now welcomes second generation honeymooners from her first brides and grooms and grandchildren!
North Shore Kauai is for romance, music, healing, relaxation, peace of mind and outdoor experiences. Auntie's is 'home-away-from-home' to writers, musicians, honeymooners, anniversary celebrants, photographers, surfers, marathoners, Trans Pac sailors, travelholics, and those in need of quietude and privacy. The Aloha Spirit is a way of life and not a slogan at Auntie's.
For independent travelers not requiring on-site resort and hotel amenities. Auntie's Holiday Rentals are light, airy, and simply furnished with island furniture and original, vintage Hawaiian art, representing a bygone lifestyle. If you can forego a big-screen TV and game machines, adapt to the occasional rooster and accept the efforts to keep ahead of minor repairs in this lush, salty climate, you will find your haven here.
As of 1/1/15, the nightly rate is $140 plus 2 taxes. There is also a $130.14 outclean fee each stay. No security fee is charged. Ohana Nights are 7 free nights (plus outclean) for every 21 paid nights. We enjoy repeat guests, their referrals and new wanderers.
For cat lovers, Coco is respectful and will usually keep her distance; however, if you are a cat lover, she'll enjoy your attention; but, Coco is NOT allowed in the rentals. Some guests are sensitive to cat hair and we all need to honor their situation.
Tobacco smoking is NOT permitted on the property.
Auntie's Holiday Rentals are permitted Kauai Transient Vacation Rentals (Permit Nos. 1367 & 1369). Auntie Sunny can be reached at 808-826-5566 for questions and recommendations.
NOTE: Auntie's Cottage and Auntie's Ocean View Apt. are separate 1-bedroom rentals. A 3d guest may request an island-style futon for $6.50/night including taxes.
Now a senior citizen, I (Auntie) came to Kauai in 1976 as a barely seasoned professional, fell hook, line and sinker for Kauai and rearranged our life to be here. With no jobs on this then-agricultural island, my family bought on Kauai's Far North Shore (the foundation of Auntie's Holiday Rentals), rented it out and simultaneously moved from the San Francisco area (Marin County) to Alaska 'for the money', working in Juneau, Anchorage and Nome for 5 years. Mesmerized by Alaska's beauty and challenges, I ended up homesteading in the 'banana belt' (on an island 45 minutes by skiff from Petersburg). Alaska remains part of life. After NAFTA, when Kauai's highly-accaimed cane production was destroyed, Kauai morphed from a multi-plantation island to a tourist destination. I permanently left behind being a law professor, lawyer and merchant mariner and focused on Auntie's Holiday Rentals, pro bono alternative dispute resolution and developing a real estate practice. My Realtor (S) license hangs with Na Pali Properties Inc in Hanalei Town, a boutique, highly service-oriented real estate firm.
Auntie Sunny purchased this cottage in 1977
Kauai chose me my first day here. Staying at Hanalei Colony Resorts (almost road's end) in a client's newly-purchased condo, that 1st night I realized 'Paradise had 'for sale' signs'. Life was immediately changed so as to be here ASAP. Within 2 years we had purchased this historic Kauai duplex and rented it out. Then, it was off to Alaska for better paying jobs. (Auntie was paid 2/3d the salary of men law professors; Alaska paid the women and men the same salaries for the same positions). By 1983 we were here full time and never looked back.
Auntie's Holiday Rentals is quiet, casual and private. Guests come here to unwind, heal, honeymoon and enjoy the gorgrous North Shore, the oldest part of the oldest island in the Hawaiian chain. Many relate to Kauai on a spiritual level. Outdoor activities, on land and sea, are abundant.
I almost hesitate to write this review because we hope to have the ocean view cottage available for our return in July! But, for anyone looking for a real Kauai experience, look no further. The location is perfect, the cottage is comfortable and the view can't be beat. Haena is heaven on earth and staying in Auntie's cottage made our experience even more memorable. Mahalo!
My Husband and I absolutely loved Auntie's Cottage, we felt it was perfect for the second leg of our honeymoon! It is in the rain forest in Kauai - and it is lush and beautiful. As you travel to find the cottage through a small town with it's charm and crossing multiple one lane bridges being courteous to drivers on the other side, you'll find that once you're there, everything melts away. It is close to Hanalei Colony Resort (which cost 3x as much per night), so stay at Auntie's! You get the same ocean, same sand, same view!!! It's also close to Ke'e Beach (swimming, lounging, snorkeling), Tunnels beach, Limahuli Garden and Preserve, Na Pali Coast, and if your a hiker, the trail starts at Ke'e Beach, it is a must do I understand, not all of it a day trip. We were not hiking this trip! Note that parking is not very good at these beach locations so go early! The cottage is just a short drive to the village (back across the bridges) where you'll find everything you need. We needed a lounge that showed College football and the NFL! Yes, I like my football too! We found one we liked a lot in town. There were more to choose from~ They even have a Natural Market for those like myself who have eating restrictions. I was very happy to find this market! This was our first time to Kauai, and not knowing what to expect, we were very happy that we chose Auntie's Cottage. It was nice to be able to cook meals if desired, especially my morning coffee. It was exactly what it promised. It's private, the ocean is literally across the street from the cottage. The bay windows offer an extreme view of the ocean and all the wave activity. I got some great sunrise pictures, it was a stormy day which made for great dramatic color contrast. We loved it and we will try and come back for our anniversaries. Enjoy!
Auntie's Cottage was absolutely perfect!!! We couldn't have picked a better place to stay in Kauai - it's incredible.
It's charming and close to all the greatest spots. The cottage is not far from Tunnels beach, and just a short drive to the village where you'll find everything you need (shopping, restaurants and markets).
Having this been our first time to Kauai, and not knowing what to expect, we were so happy that we chose Auntie's Cottage. It was exactly what it promised. It's private, (literally) across from the beach and cozy.
We can't wait to come back and visit!
We spent 8 days at Auntie's Cottage and couldn't have asked for anything better. The cottage was comfortable and clean and provided us all we needed as a place to relax on our vacation. We enjoyed the jungle setting each morning as we had coffee on the lanai. A 30 second walk had us sitting on the beach watching the ocean, the surf crashing against the rocks, and our own private blowhole. The north shore of Kauai is far from the action but close to great beaches and the spectacular Na Pali Coast.
This was a perfect place to stay on the North Shore! My husband and I wanted a low-key place to stay on the North Shore - we found our spot! As frequent visitors to this part of the island, we were familiar with the location and knew what we wanted.
Loved the big kitchen and full size fridge and gas stove. New washer and dryer were awesome. We exercise and practiced martial arts daily so it was great to be able to wash our gear. Loved the fact that the cottage was set back from the road, really had a sense of privacy.
Landscaping was lovely.
The cottage was casual, authentic and private. Loved being able to walk along the ocean right across the street.
Auntie was friendly and helpful before, during and after our travel. Have already recommended this place to several friends.
Three words come to mind: old school charm. We were greeted by a beautiful flower arrangement and welcome note from Aunty, a sweet woman who has owned and managed the property for more than 30 years. The cottage had ample space for a couple and felt very private, surrounded by a lush hillside on one side and vegetation and trees on the other, separating the property from its neighbors, a rental property next door. The cottage decorated with classic Hawaiian furniture and art and is equipped with standard fare for a vacation rental: beach towels, a cooler, a library of "vacation" fiction, local maps and basic kitchen equipment. The cottage is located within walking distance of one restaurant, one coffee shop, and Wainiha Beach, which is great for walking on, but rough surf prevents serious swimming or snorkeling - it is best to drive either to Tunnels Beach or Hanalei Bay. With no major restaurants, shopping or beaches nearby, you will have to drive to get anywhere. Overall, we were very happy with Aunty's cottage - the price, privacy and charm made for a great vacation rental.
Luau, Music, Hanalei Farmers Markets for Fresh Island Fish and Produce on Tues. pm and Sat. am. Hawaiian Canoe Paddling, Kite-surfing, stand-up paddling and surfing. Yoga, Massage and spa treatments. The public bus turns around in Hanalei and does not go as far as Auntie's thus Auntie urges guests to have a rental car if they want to explore the island. Taxis are very expensive.
