Okay but.....

  • 2 of 5

You rent this house for the location. It's in a convenient location to get to Ogden and to the snow mountains. It takes 5 minutes to get to the grocery store and about 8 minutes to get to Snowbasin. It's not for the house. As other renters have stated, it smells. It's on an island in the middle of the river so you expect some musty moldy smell but it is strong (I'm not sure it's just mold and mildew) and the plug ins that mist to cover the smell are overpowering. The entire house needs a deep clean. The floors, carpets, bedding, everything needs to be wiped, washed and cleaned. It's a home that's been run down and shows wear and tear. We didn't utilize the firepit area because of rain but there were broken chairs and tables all around so it wouldn't have been useful. There is plenty of parking but once you are in the house, you can see all the garbage that is stored behind the fence by the parking area. It looks like a junk yard. The caretaker is courteous and addressed any issues we had. All in all, it's fine if your intent is come and ski and spend most of your time out of the house. It's a place to sleep and cook your own meals.

Owner's Response: I am sorry they were unhappy with house, but most of their complaints are unfounded or exaggerated. We try hard to keep the house clean and comfortable, but not a sterile hotel. Have no idea what she was referring to concerning outdoor furniture there are 23 aluminum frame chairs all in good condition(new swivel chair was missing arm because screw missing when bought fixed now) All tables in great condition. . A old church pew by horse shoe pit is a little funky but almost never used. The house does have a slight smell occasionally when sits unused in winter when closed up, as soon as heating and ventilation are turned on and house occupied it clears right up, next winter will handle differently. My caretaker was taking advantage of vacant land across river and parked some trailers there, that is unacceptable to me and they are no longer there. After these guests left toilets clogged , pulled toilets found 2 syringes that had been flushed and got stuck and a broken crack pipe in trash, not sure from who but give idea troubles owners have. Do not charge security deposit and most guests are very good., but have had large amount of damage and disrespect to property. Making it unfortunately difficult for all

We enjoyed our 3 night stay at this beautiful location! The house decor is full of character and humor. We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub after a day of skiing and playing ping pong for entertainment. Don was very helpful when we needed something.

Great Location and Charm

  • 4 of 5

Fabulous location and charming house. Beautiful spot nestled in the middle of the river. The uniqueness of this home and location helped us overlook some cleanliness issues. Such a cool place we would rent again. Caretaker was friendly and helpful.

Good place for the right group

  • 3 of 5

This is really a unique place. I went back and forth between loving it and hating it. There are SO many positives, but unfortunately the couple negatives about the place outweighed them and I was very ready to get out of this house by the end of our stay.

The positives...

There's a suspension bridge - how cool is that!

The river on both sides - gorgeous

Location - private but so close to town

House size - really spacious!

Fully stocked - plenty of TP, towels, kitchen supplies

Backyard - is fantastic! With a swing in the middle of the river! They have a little man made island with a two person swing. It was heavenly!

TVs - big TVs with lots of channels

Game room - my kids loved the pool table and ping pong

Caretaker - super friendly

The negatives...

When we checked in the caretaker mentioned that occasionally they may have a mouse. Ok, I get it, middle of the woods, old house. I can handle an occasional mouse. What I can't handle is within hours my kids are on the living room floor and mice are bold and plentiful enough to come skittering right past them. And waking up at night hearing them gnawing in the closet. And ZERO mouse traps out! it is very hard to have a relaxing vacation when you feel like the place is crawling and mice may have touch every surface.

Second, the smell in the extra master bedroom. We checked in on a cooler day and the smell was there but tolerable. By the second day the temps were in the 90s and it was SO TERRIBLE for the rest of our stay - sick to your stomach terrible. There is a dead body of some sort in or under that room. There is a review from 6 months before our stay complaining about the smell too.

And a couple areas that could be improved...

The hot tub. When we opened it the chemical fumes burned our eyes. We found a testing kit and as expected the test registered through the roof for bromide/chlorine. We have a hot tub at home, so we didn't bother having them drain and refill. The caretaker was so friendly I'm sure he would have fixed it, but it is something that is so easy to take care of, it should have been done correctly and ready for guests.

There are several sliding doors that open to the river and backyard. Could have been a positive, but there was only one screen on one of the doors and lots of bugs coming off the river.

It really is a cool house. I wanted to love it. But the smell and the mice kept it from being a relaxing vacation house.

Owner's Response: Sorry to hear these negitive comments we try very hard to make your stay at our home exceptionally nice. As far as mice go we are in the "woods" and occasionally they can invade we have now decided to put traps out between guests visits and if anyone ever spots mice signs please bring it to Dons attention. As far as hot tub we go above and beyond to keep it clean. Have had trouble in past from guests jumping in river and tracking mud into tub, so now we drain water every stay and fill with fresh water and reheat for every new stay as far as chlorine we do have a floating chlorine dispenser for health reasons. One of the really nice things about my house is lack of bugs being on the water for some reason I do not understand there are almost no mosquitoes our flys occasionally moths at night, 4 of the 5 sliding doors do have screens one that doesn`t by hot tub does not function as door(sliding door right next to it) The occasional smell in extra is a mystery we are trying hard to resolve.

Great place, very spacious, lovely property.

Great space, relaxing surroundings. Not super clean nor luxurious, but it's a cabin on the river and wonderful for what it is. Lots of room and space to spread out in.
