Since the small island Årø (not Ærø!) separated from the mainland by only a 750-meter-wide sound, the island has always been the point of entry for invaders; last also for the Germans during the Second World War. Today 157 people live on Årø and can justifiably be proud of their "Lillebælts pearl", as they call their little island. The only place on the island has a grocery store, which is also an inn - "Brummers Gaard". Hiking tours are often used by hobby ornithologists, as some rare bird species take a break on Årø. For the small tourists there is a great forest playground and for the adults recommend the Årø Vingård, which has been awarded several times as the best winery in Denmark. Other attractions include the "Julekirke" (Christmas church), foundlings from the Stone Age and the "Bulhuset" (bull house) right next to Brummers Gaard. The tranquility of this beautiful island invites you to slow down, and even dogs have ample field paths enough time to "read the newspaper".
So the cute island with the interesting history (populated since the Neolithic period, from 1864 to 1920 represented Årø by the then distribution of land Germany's northernmost island, was diligently driven on the smuggling) easily even a trip to be paid without long before to plan. Every half an hour a ferry from Årøsund (near Hadersleben) is waiting for the 10-minute crossing from morning until late in the evening.
