The seaside resort Prerow, first mentioned as a fishing and seafaring village in the 12th Century, is located on the Darß, a part of the peninsula Fischland-Darß-Zingst, between the cities of Rostock and Stralsund. It is surrounded by the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park.
Directly on site is the five kilometers long and up to 80 meters wide fine sandy beach with only gradually sloping shore. A nearly 400 m long pier connects as an extension of the touristically developed promenade. Also located here is one of the largest nudist beaches in Germany, continuing the tradition of the former "Majorca of the GDR".
West of Prerow lies the unspoiled Darßwald with the west beach, which is considered one of the twenty most beautiful beaches in the world (according to TV channel Arte) and can be reached only by foot, by bicycle or by coach. Also there is the Darßer place with the old lighthouse and the nature exhibition Natureum.
Prerow has a marina on the Prerow stream with access to the Saaler Bodden. From this highly protected harbor on the eastern outskirts, shipping lines to Vitte (Hiddensee), Ahrenshoop, Barth and Stralsund operated and there are regularly excursion boats to Boddenrundfahrten out. The resting places of the cranes near Zingst are also approached during the season.
